What do you like about your Hannigan Trike?
OK Hannigan Trike owners, here's your chance to brag on your Hannigan Trike and tell current and future trike owners why they should buy a Hannigan Trike or Trike Conversion. Topics of interest will be ride, handling, features, benefits, design, fitment, service, price, styling, etc. There will be NO FLAMING or complaining in this thread towards any dealer or the manufacturer as there are other places for that.
This thread will be based on your positive experiences and why you bought a Hannigan and why you recommend Hannigan to others. Please state the make and model of your bike and the make and model of your Hannigan Conversion along with how long you have owned it and how many Hannigan Trikes you have owned.
Re: What do you like about your Hannigan Trike?
I don't currently own a Hannigan trike, but I did… and it was wonderful! I had dreamed of a V-rod trike for some years -- sort of like wanting a corvette just because it is HOT!!! When the opportunity arose, and the time was right, I bought an '09 V-rod and started planning. I found options for trike kits somewhat limited, but then I had the opportunity to tour the Hannigan factory, meet the wonderful family of owners and employees there, see the quality and exceptional design in person, and to see an example of their V-rod trike on the showroom floor. I was sold! The kit was sleek, sporty, and HOT -- just what I wanted!
Working with Dave, Ruth Ann, Andrew, John, and Jim was wonderful. They built the trike right there in their factory, and every part of it was top-notch including a flawless paint job. Questions and curiosity were welcomed, and I was always made to feel that my phone call or visit was valued and important to them.
The trike had independent suspension and the ride was smooth as silk.
It certainly was unique and drew a lot of attention everywhere I went! I loved it, and would still have it had I not been broadsided in June of this year by someone running a stop sign.
But even though the very violent crash totaled the trike, breaking the axle and bending the bike frame, I give a lot of credit to the quality of the trike kit and build as I believe it contributed to saving me from critical injury or death. The trike NEVER tipped or wobbled. Although I was thrown off and did receive a lot of surface injury, I was able to ride out the initial collision for a second or two as the trike stayed upright and rolled forward/sideways away from the point of impact.
Without hesitation, I recommend Hannigan's products and their company to anyone considering them!
Re: What do you like about your Hannigan Trike?
I'm impressed with the engineering, it feels solid and rides smooth. I like the style of the new GEN2, IMO they did a great job taking inspiration from the 2012 Wing. Working with John was a great experience, I really appreciated them letting me park the enclosed trailer at their factory so I could save some money on gas. The paint is flawless a perfect match to the factory color which as a former painter I know how difficult it can sometimes be getting a good match. Before I bought a Hannigan I had folks who owned them tell me they were the Cadillacs and I believe them, I'm looking forward to many miles.
Re: What do you like about your Hannigan Trike?
We have an '09 Yamaha Royal Star Venture with Hannigan conversion done the summer of '10. Bike was new with 100 miles when converted. There were few conversions available for our bike, but was impressed by the Hannigan construction. Our trike is long and wide. The conversion almost doubled the price of our ride, but RSV was just too heavy to handle safely with the two of us aboard. We were very happy with the workmanship on our new trike, color match, fit, condition, etc. After a year, rear brakes began squealing very loudly. Took trike to Hannigan factory, and Jim Gooch replaced rotors with vented stainless steel rotors and replaced brake pads. Jim was very nice to me.
Reverse option was not available when we ordered conversion, but it is now available.
Would have ordered reverse if it had been available. We live in NJ, and our trike has traveled from Key West to Sherbrooke, Canada to Arkansas to Minnesota and many rallies in between. Trike has climbed to the summit of Mt. Washington twice, and this summer we rode the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway. Trike now has 23,000 carefree miles, even though I had a broken shoulder during the summer of 2012, which disabled me for four months. Love to drive trike on the open roads. It gives such a nice ride. This year, plan to go to rally in Colorado and also visit some western national parks. Still trying to convince Jeannette to join me.
I'm going to second what you have written. The issue of paint is very worthy of sharing. I had my conversion done at the factory in Murray and Tim ( pretty sure I am right) did and does as good a job as any paint job you will find on anything coming off the auto assembly lines. Extremely pleased with the quality and as mentioned, the "richness" of the color. Matches the Flair Red of the Wing to a tee. Like msocko, I too was allowed to park the trailer onsite and that was big for me since I went home during the build and was thankful that I did not have to pull the trailer the 880 miles back then turn around and do it again. While on site, I really felt as if I was welcomed and made to feel a part of the process. Everyone was happy to answer questions and explain what was going on and no one minded all the pictures of the build that I was sending back to my lovely bride. That is, before she surprised me by showing up, with the help of a local Nashville guy who I owe a payback now for keeping such a secret. What a cool surprise that was.
I have ridden several other kits and your use of the term "Cadillac" about nailed it for me. Over the course of my looking to make this decision, and the time I have spent around the Trike Community, it was clear that the Hannigan name was synonymous with quality and craftsmanship. It's easy to see when you visit as the Team that works at the factory are like Family. I know this is a term that gets overused from time to time, but just spend some time onsite and you will see for yourself that these guys like Jim, Neil, Aron, Tim, Randy, Chris and the rest of the gang work hard to make it all happen and really do enjoy what they do. Oh and that John Lee guy is something to see in action . . . . . .
The Team went way beyond what I would have expected when transferring over my wheelchair rack and helping to work out my brake issues. They took something that was not made by them and insisted on making it better and that they did.
Having witnessed the commitment and attention to detail along with the passion to work with the customer is why I mentioned to Dave and Ruth Anne that I would welcome the chance to share what my experiences have been as I ride this great machine around the country. It's been said that life is a journey, and with this Hannigan, it's going to be a smooth, enjoyable ride.
Very well said. I know I'm looking forward to many smooth miles on mine. I have 2 trips planed for next year, one to South Dakota with my dad and the other to Nashville with my wife. What I like about the Wing is the extra power, it'll pull my little Aluma MCT like its not even back there.
Re: What do you like about your Hannigan Trike?
I have the 2009 Yamaha RSV hannigan trike, and love the way it performs. It's very smooth, and I love the wide body style. Every place I go people are always commenting on how wide the body is. The suspension is great. It takes the bumps so smoothly. I do like other trike kits - but the hannigan is very outstanding to them.
People have told me that hannigan trike can be seen very clearly at night due to the wide body. I have taken a note to that. I have watch drivers that wanted to pass me give me plenty of room. The bike is very visible at night. If I had to do it over again, I would purchase another hannigan trike.
Re: What do you like about your Hannigan Trike?
Simply put-it is the smoothest riding trike of the many I tested before buying the Gen I Hannigan. It is also, IMO, the most maintenance free of all those I looked at.
Re: What do you like about your Hannigan Trike?
I like the way Wheels tells his story of actually seeing the Hannigan trike build on his great looking machine. I bought my used 2009 BMW K1200LT already triked with just about every option they offered at the time. Best ride I've ever experienced on a bike.
With over 15,000 miles so far, the combination of the heavyweight LT touring bike, plus the Hannigan conversion with the independent rear suspension, auxiliary fuel tank and integration with the BMW ABS system, makes this a truly smooth riding, comfortable touring configuration.
It's no wonder that that every picture of an LT trike I've ever seen is a Hannigan. It feels like quality from front to back. I like the styling, the wide rear axle and huge trunk space.
An email to Hannigan quickly got me a few pages of recommended maintenance. I took that to the local BMW dealer when I put ol' Bessie in for some clutch work. The head mechanic later said that servicing the Hannigan rear end was easier than working on his own car. (Of course, it really helps that you can lift off the body to service the rear brakes and drive line.)
My previous trike was a Suzuki with a Lehman conversion and the difference between the straight axle and the IRS is like night and day. .... Yeah, yeah, I've talked to Lehman, CSC and Harley trikers who swear that they prefer the way a straight axle rides and handles, but I don't think I'll ever again own a trike that doesn't have IRS in back.
My opinion?
Hannigan rocks!!!

Ditto. I had a Hannigan/R1200LT and sold it in a weak moment. It was a splendid machine in all respects as are the Hannigans and their staff. The other kit manufacturers have strong points but none are on par with Hannigan, IMO.
