Got in a better NO FANS ride this afternoon. Ambient temp was up, got it fully warmed up. Interesting #'s

40 minute ride, mostly 55-70 mph (fully warmed up) Ambient temp 63* (Fans off)

    207* Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor
215* IR Temp gun right behind front cyl spark plug
236* IR Temp gun right behind rear cyl spark plug
222* IR Temp gun at Outside surface of Cylinder Head Temp Sensor

40 minute ride, mostly 75 mph (fully warm up) Ambient temp 68* (Fans on, as well as a full suite of other cooling strategies in place)

    220* Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor
246* IR Temp gun right behind front cyl spark plug
270* IR Temp gun right behind rear cyl spark plug
211* IR Temp gun at Outside surface of Cylinder Head Temp Sensor

am I missing something? seems like the motor was cooler with the fans off
Yeah, I messed up and did not label the first one...it was a Twin Cooled.

That is a major variable, as you can see.

Also, there were two other variables in play-

    1. Ambient temps were 63* in one and 68* in the other.
    2. Speed can be a major variable in engine temps.

Stop n go is the the hottest an engine will get, then any sustained speed of 70 mph or more will get the engine Much hotter than any speeds between 20 and 65 mph.

But, the biggest difference is those two above are apples and oranges because one was Twin-Cooled and the other Air Cooled.

I know I am posting both up in this thread, and I gotta remember to label them. When I am done accumulating data, I will make two separate reports, one that has all the Twin Cooled in it, and the other with all the air-cooled.

Great I am anxiously awaiting your results as spring is coming in the next few months in the ice fields of Canada (lol) and I am contemplating on getting a fan set up Just trying to decide on the mighty mites (which may be too noisy) or the bigger ones (I forget the name)
By the way. I don't know about the good old USA but I was talking to a dealer on the phone the other day and was told by having two oil coolers in line (the stock freewheeler oil cooler and a 10 row jagg on the down tube) that if my motor failed a leak down test the warranty would not be honored. The dealer told me by doing this my oil pressure would be altered. I told him I don't believe this as my light has never turned on and my lifters don't rattle at idle but he said if I had this set up no warranty.

I don't know what Canadian laws are regarding warranties, nor do I know if HD had a different warranty for the bikes/trikes it produces for Canada. But if the HD warranty is the same warranty that they have for USA bikes, what your dealer told you in inaccurate....unless, of course, something was hinky with your dual oil cooler install and it ended up causing a problem with the engine. (like a kinked hose)

A correctly installed Jagg 10 row will NOT change the oil pressure downward in any perceptible way.

On a hot day, especially at low RPM, your oil pressure will be a little bit higher (2-4 lbs) because the oil will be cooler than if you did not have it. This is a good thing. They would not be able to prove that the additional oil cooler caused any damage to the engine.

I would change dealerships. If that is not an option, simply remove it prior to taking it in for any warranty work or tests.

    Data from this morning.

    AIR-Cooled Twin Cam

40 minute ride, mostly 55-70 mph (fully warm up) Ambient temp 68* (Fans off)

    234* Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor
260* IR Temp gun right behind front cyl spark plug
290* IR Temp gun right behind rear cyl spark plug
245* IR Temp gun at Outside surface of Cylinder Head Temp Sensor

This is getting close to as hot as I want to let my engine get. It will be warmer this afternoon, and I will ride it with no fans on...but if I see the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor cross the 250* mark I will stop, take the IR temps and then turn my fans on.

When the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor is at 270*, engine damage is occurring.

    More Data-

40 minute ride, mostly 55-70 mph (fully warm up) Ambient temp 78* (Fans off)

After taking the above measurements, I rode another 10 minutes with the fans ON, check out how much the temps went down in that short time!

Thanks Kevin those temps were exactly what I was looking for. When are you doing the mighty mite versus cool master tests. I am interested in temp differences and noise differences and how much you can feel the heat blowing on your leg from the fans. My mufflers aren't very loud so I don't want to be able to hear loud whining of the fans at idle or speed.

As for the Canadian warranty all I have is the warranty listed in the owners manual. It is printed in USA so I imagine it is the same every where. Right now the book is in the trunk and the bike is loaded in my trailer as I am heading for Palm Springs this Thursday. If its different I will send you a copy when I get to Palm Springs
PS when I am going to buy these fans do I get them from you or from Love Jugs?

Sorry for not coming back to this thread and seeing your questions.

Our temps here have not varied much, so I have not been doing any temperature logging recently.

When the temps get up into the 80's & 90's I will do some more temp logging.

Next week we are going to begin our testing of the different Love Jug fans.

At some point we may sell them, but it is not even an option right now. We never sell anything that we have not tested, and seen that it is a product that we would run on our own bikes.

That said, the likelihood is high (based on so many happy Customers) that they will test out good. If you want to get them now (or anytime soon) I would recommend getting them at this LINK.

I have not forgotten about the heat testing...we just have not had ambient temps up into the mid 80's to 90's yet. Should be soon.

I have been testing the Love Jugs and should have a report soon.

Have you done your testing of the different love jugs yet? I am anxiously awaiting your results to see how close they are to the testing I did earlier.

I think your tests should be better than mine as I was comparing a freewheeler to a street glide and you have a power vision to tell temps and I only had a heat gun.

Have you done your testing of the different love jugs yet? I am anxiously awaiting your results to see how close they are to the testing I did earlier.

I think your tests should be better than mine as I was comparing a freewheeler to a street glide and you have a power vision to tell temps and I only had a heat gun.
Yes, we have done apples to apples testing on 2 different bikes of the Love Jugs. All the numbers are in a notebook, where they were recorded as I was riding.

By next week I should have them transcribed into a readable report that I will publish.
