Default should I buy the extended warranty

I have a 2012 Tri Glide and the manufacturers warranty expires in June. A 5 year warranty only gives you 3 additional years for about 1900 dollars with the tire and wheel coverage. The bike is in great shape now. The big question is, is it worth it? Thanks for your input.

I really don't think you need wheel and tire coverage but that's is all up to the individual.

shop around and see who will give you the best price. You don't have to buy from your local dealer for the warranty. Just make sure it is a Harley warranty if you do go that route.

Just so you'll know. A 4yr extended warranty for a GoldWing(that's a total of 7yrs. w/no mileage limit) can be purchased for less than $600.
So why would HD's be $1,900 for only 3yrs?????? I'd be asking for a huge discount!
Not dissing HD here as the Wing's ext warranty is higher than $600 at retail but, dealers will discount that price.

Well I got the extended warranty on my 11. I got it in November od 12. I got the 6 year which actually gives me 4 years after the factory warranty. I did not get the wheel and tire coverage. It cost me $1334.
Should you get it? It's a gamble, Your betting your going to need it and they are betting your not.
If you do have any issues you may need it. If you don't have any issues you'll feel like you wasted the money.
I'm not much of a gambler so I got it.
Some people need them and others never need to use them.
Just because one needed to use theirs don't mean you will need to or the other way around.
Someone who needed and used their extended warranty will say yes you need to get it. Someone who had one and didn't need it will say you don't need it.
A decision only you can make for you.

I got the 7 year with tire and wheel for 1900. You can dicker with the dealer. I like it for the travel reimbursement if/when you do break down far from home.

I got the extended warranty when I got my TG 3 years ago. Has paid for itself easily. The latest one being an upgrade to stage 4. When some things went wrong, I elected to upgrade since a lotta parts and labor were being covered by warranty anyway. Long story short... I did a $7,000 to $8,000 modification that cost me about $3,000... mostly in parts that I added. Would not have cost me anything if I had stayed with original parts. I now have a basically brand new SE motor from bottom to top for that price. Very very happy with the results.
2011 Cool Blue TriGlide with full stage 4, a lotta other upgrades, and a lotta shiny stuff.

As stated it is an individual choice. Things to consider how good are you at working on your trike? If you have the dealer do most work then that leans towards the warrantee. If you do most of your own work then it goes the other way. Do you travel alot? If you do then the warrantee would be a very nice item. If something as simple as a speed sensor goes out. Easy fix if you are at home with your tools, but tough out on the road so it goes to the dealer. Warrantee covers. About a $180 job without. I am very mechanically inclined, but we do 2 to 3 long trips a year. The peace of mind of the warrantee was worth it to me when I'm on the road. I actually sold my 2007 HD/Champion that I built for a new Tri-Glide just for this peace of mind on the road. When the trike is home only I work on it for everything. But out on the road no tools like the warrantee. Just my thoughts I hope help in making your decision.

Thumbs up Re: should I buy the extended warranty

Thanks to everyone for your input. It seems like I can go ether way with this. All the dealers seem to have the same price but there is one dealer that is willing to let me pay it out for 18 months interest free. I think the 5 year plan that gives me 3 addisional years without the tire and wheel package. should cost me about 1500 dollars. Thanks again for all your help.

Do yourself a favour and get a price from Jim Palmer at Kutter Harley Davison in Wisconsin. He offers the best prices in the US and can also sell to Canadians as the warranty program is offered for North America. As a member of CVOHarley form as well, a majority of members of that form used Jim as did I. He will do everything by email and is great to deal with. Only a suggestion. I have no personal connection.

Totally agree.
If you are mechanically inclined, have a garage, have the tools, have the time, have the knowledge = then I would not recommend it, BUT if you have none of the above and want piece of mind and you have the money now = then I say go for it.

I did and have not regreatted it for one minute.

I did the exact same thing Trent did to my '03 Ultra and made out like a bandit. Also you can transfer it to another bike if you buy a new one, which I did.
So I have piece of mind for the next 7 years. Plus I have a 3 year unlimited milage service contract for which I will save over $2000 dollars over the cost of scheduled services for the next 3 years.

Only thing better then that is if I were a certified H-D mechanic.....which I'm no way near being.

Good luck to you.

I'm looking at buying a new TG and the salesperson mentioned the extended warranty, my first response was, shouldn't HD be building theses bike good enough that you wouldn't need one ?? Then he mentioned that if you don't use your warranty you will be refunded the total amount at the end of the contract. That seems like a safe insurance policy with peace of mind. With that being said, I may ask to have the warranty included in the price of the offer. I enjoy wheeling and dealing. The best part is the look on their face when you say deal breaker and walk away.

I doubt you'll get back ALL the money if any. How do they make any money on that and why would they got to all that trouble for nothing???

I got a prorated amount back on my unused policy after a year when I transfered it to my new bike.

Default Re: should I buy the extended warranty

I just bought a 2014 Tri Glide with the extended warranty. I didn't realize I could receive a partial refund with the extended warranty of my 2010 TG trade-in. I am going to call the dealer tomorrow about it. I am not expecting anything positive of it but will ask anyway. Thanks for the info.

I got a prorated amount back on my unused policy after a year when I transfered it to my new bike.

I asked the same question, how do you make money on that deal. Here's how, it's a dealer option, they take your money what ever plan you buy and just use it with no interest fee to them. It's like a loan interest free. If you don't use it, then they give it back. nothing lost nothing gained except them using your money. It's a win win for all.

My understanding is that the EW is transferable. Likely they gave you a trade-in allowance, taking into account it has more value for whomever they sell it to with the EW, than without.

The EW is an insurance policy, regulated by State Insurance Commissioners. Just like any other policy, it can be cancelled and you will receive back any paid unused premium, less what ever processing fees are written into the policy.

To the OP on whether to get one or not. It is insurance, if you use it, you will be happy you had it...if not, "it is a waste of $".

I personally have it, and since I ride a lot of hard miles, the probability that I will "need" it is higher. I have found, for me, the EW has always more than paid for itself. Of course, they still make $ selling them because of all the people that buy them and don't need to use them.
The tire and wheel covers if it doesnt hold air you will get a new tire or wheel replaced and or installed also reimbursed on towing and lodging if necessary. If you don't have tire and wheel you loose your towing reimbursement.
