When winter sets in I'm going to get shiney on the stands. I will get it apart and start measuring what needs changed but not before. To get the use of vented rotors you need to change calipers I believe that is really the way to upgrade that would eliminate the rotor mount bracket the old style brake calipers have. new style calipers have mount with rotor lake newer Focus and mustangs with 4 bolt pattern wheels. I have not abandon the project just had to put it on a shelve for a while I'm still riding ya know! thanks. ride safely fearless

    Default Rotor update - CONFIRMED

ok folks, the news we have been waiting for ... the stock rotors from a 2002 Ford Focus can be machined to fit. They are a match. Now im sure of this.

Its been a rough couple of weeks, so i havent gotten to cutting and drilling them yet. I have the 'drilled' pattern' template done also......But at least i have physical proof .. some reason i cannot upload the pics, the uploader keeps crashing here ...... i can email em to anyone who wants em ... send me a message, and ya can tell me what ya'll think.

If i find a way to 'make the pics load' here, i will put em up.

    here they are...

I too have confirmed this. 2002 Focus REAR rotors are pretty close, the bolt pattern is the same. From NAPA the rotors are less than $20, price today is $15.00 each through my business. I took the new rotor and one from my trike to a local machine shop and they said around $50 each for machining. That would be around $150 total for a pair of rotors. That to me is reasonable, as opposed to the alternative!

    Default rotors great

Now the Motor Co. went to larger rotors and larger calipers why of course the answer is better brakes. My question is Harley did away with the caliper mount on the 09-13
in doing so went with a more larger brake caliper type used on Ford Focus model cars, I just have to search which one there are several sub models. I want better brakes and parts we can replace without making someone else rich.

    Fearless got a point ....

AND .... the larger rotors now are a larger DIAMETER only ... I have seen them. They look like the same thickness. But I will find out what max thickness could be with new pads...

less machining it will be (Yoda voice).

    Default Any luck Fearless?

Would you by chance have what they call progress Fearless? I have pulled my wheels an have noticed that there is no room for a 'larger' rotor. Diameter or thickness... Was wondering what luck, if any you have had? Sent ya a message with same wording FYI ... Wondering now that warm weather has finally come.

Being a tool maker i find this very interesting. So my first question is,with the rotors sitting on the braking surface as in the first picture what is the distance from the top to the first braking surface. Will the thickness difference be taken equally from both surfaces or just one.And is this for 09-13 trikes or 14 and later. Okay after looking at the third pic it appears that stock will have to be removed from both surfaces. This is great info. Please keep it coming.Looks like i will be going to the parts store this weekend.

MKBH - did you have any luck with this yet... I am about to start cutting mine, and you being a tool maker, I figure you have some advice? plus im guessing getting the right cutters for cast is appropriate?

The grade of carbide inserts can vary depending on brand using a cemented carbide lathe tool bit i would use either grade 883 or C2,if you are using an indexible style lathe tool bit i would have to look it upor you can go to MSC on line and they will spell out what grade works best.My buddy has an 09 trike and i will be doing his this winter.

Has anyone been able to put enough miles on either the Focus rotors or the DS rotors to form an opinion? I put 09b rotors and EBC pads on 3000 miles ago, still squeak, just not as bad.

No - I have 2 sets cut and have not had a chance to 'run' them yet ... ran into a glitch with the machinist which will be straightened out here soon. But here is a pic of the rotors after they were machined, and drilled. This is the first test after the first machining im about to do. They are approx. 8mm thick - this may be a little too much (.5-1mm) but not by much. the clearing of new brake pads is my gage - I am working this out.

Keep in mind, they still haven't been run on the road yet - time. All I need is enough time to jack up the TG, pull the wheels quickly, change the rotors - reverse that, run em, and then do again to remove them and get them to machinist to make them 'perfect'. And do it all over again until no problems. Simple right???? But its progress - should have it very very soon.

And o yeah - these cost me total so far $66.16. no - im not adding my own time in, but so far its still less than Drag or HD, and I know these are cast, not plain steel - though the new HD -09B part is finally made of cast.

How to wear out the rotors!?

Let some milkweed at the H-D dealership adjust your POS "parking brake".

They never followed the service manual instructions and kept cranking on the knob on the handle of my '13 TG. Needless to say, their "adjustment" ground the pads down into the rotors and, there you have it. New pads, new rotors and labor worked out to ~ $900! Just shy of the 11K mile mark.

Next immediate mod? - complete removal of the parking brake. It's hangin' on the wall in my garage. And I just replaced only the pads again at 32K.
