Default Real Time Ride Report of DK Custom Hot Bike Tour

We're headed out in the morning to Joplin, MO to meet up with xxxx??? fellow riders for The Hot Bike Tour, a Rolling Rally.

The Tour starts in Joplin, MO and ending up in Wisconsin Dells, WI.

Even though I'm not riding Tri-Glide, there will be plenty of Trikes along for all or part of the ride and I'll be posting plenty of pics of them.

At the end of the ride Mary and I are going to head over to Fuel Moto for a look around and then we'll be headed back to Mississippi.

Depending on which routes we take, it will be somewhere between 2500-3000 miles round trip.

I went last year and it was a blast. Should be even better this year.

We're 95% packed up...ready to roll.

Here's a pic from tonite.

I'm going to try to post some pics each evening from the days ride and rally. When we get back, we'll probably post some more pics, plus put together a little video.

I'll also be posting pics each day on our Instagram page....
Friday morning, ready to roll out of Mississippi to Joplin, MO, the starting city of the Hot Bike Tour.

Cutting the corner of Tennessee for 40 miles or so to get to Arkansas.

Crossing the Mississippi River into Arkansas.

We had some fun in the winding foothills in Arkansas. Perfect riding weather in the mid 80's.

The bike is running perfectly. Great sound, pulling strong, running cool, good mpg. Very happy with it!

Entering Missouri.

Covered around 200 miles in Missouri...mostly highway miles.

I have a lot of foot positions between the floorboards, heel rests and highway pegs.

Mary has her footboards, she'll put her feet up on my legs now and then. Recently she discovered that it's a nice change to put her feet up on the top of the bag guards.

Getting close to Joplin. We covered a tad over 400 miles today, getting to the starting point.

Already a few bikes here...registration is tomorrow, so we'll see a lot more then. No trikes yet, I'm sure we'll see some tomorrow.

Yes, that is John Zamora's blue low rider. If you looked at the ride report from last years Tour, you'll see it was gold then...he didn't like it so changed it up. I think the blue looks pretty good.

Had a good chat with Jeff of Bagger Mag and Hot Bike Mag, also Dave of Hot Bike mag. Met up with several folks who I rode with last year on the Sporty, and met some new folks too. Glad Mary is riding with me this year.

Gonna be fun!

Default Re: Real Time Ride Report of DK Custom Hot Bike Tour

    Today was not about riding.

We stayed in Joplin. We did ride a few miles to the Dealership for Check-in/Registration.

Last year there were a few trikes, today I stopped counting at 20. There's a bunch of them.

After getting checked in for the ride up to Wisconsin Dells, we headed over to the "event area". Thousands of folks and bikes checking out the vendors, the bikes, the build-off bikes, etc. There was a good band, NightTrain and some good food.

Besides us "normal folk" there are 24 bike builders that built a bike for this run.

They display them every day for a popular vote, then ride their "show" bike with the rest of us to the next city.

Here is the only Trike in the build-off.

Here's a 2014 Ultra with some serious modding and crazy color...but it still has the radiators in the lowers.

It was good to see the "Death Machine" build with a DK Custom Products Outlaw 587 Air Cleaner & Outlaw Breather Bolts.

Very cool build.

    Lot's of details!

Here's John Shope's Dirty Bird Concepts build. Turbo, crazy front wheel, and paint that the camera just can't do justice.

Unknown Industries was there doing some stunt riding. Will get more pics at the next stop, just caught the tail end of the show.

Some more of the build-off bikes. Gonna be cool riding with these bikes...and seeing how they do riding for the next 4 days up to Wisconsin.

Today was the first leg of the Ride...Joplin to Jefferson City.

I don't think the Hotel knew what they were getting into...this is just a few of the bikes that were right at the front entrance.
Last year, most everyone rode together in one pack most of the time. Traffic split us up into a bunch of different ones leaving out. Looking back, that's Brian Klock on his unique cafe style "bagger" behind us.

Here's about 100 bikes hanging a U-turn...guy up front turned right instead of left....we all followed.

The entire ride up was secondary roads, weather was great...mid 70's and cloudy. It was a short (240 miles) but fun ride. We started near the beginning...stopped and watched all the bikes go by, then a bunch of us played, working our way back to about the middle pack before the first gas stop.

Ahead on the right is Pat on the Led Sled Sporty.

This is the only gas stop we made.

By this time there were smaller groups of 30-40 bikes riding together.

We got to the hotel, checked in, unloaded the bike, then went downtown to the "rally" and some of the bikes were still just getting there 1 & 2 hours later.

Place was packed. Good band, and lots to see!
Woke up this morning to some pretty thick fog.

By the time we got down to the starting point, near the old Penitentiary, it was starting to burn off...but it took a couple of hours to be totally gone.

Here's about 1/3 the crew riding.

Found out there were 380 signed up to ride from Joplin to Wisconsin Dells. A few have dropped out, and a bunch added on for a day or two.

Here we are headed out this morning...we were about in the middle of the pack when pulling out.

Headed thru town...pictures don't do the sight justice of 400 or so bikes running thru town.
Within the first 30 minutes the slower riders were behind us. We ran about 40 miles of winding roads at a good clip. Really nice roads and really nice to not have to slow down in the curves.
Mary and I took off about 10 minutes before everyone else and found a good spot to stop to take some pics and video. Vid turned out great, and we'll be posting it up on youtube after we get home.
We arrived at downtown Springfield.

Lot of local bikes and folks, good band, and had a good time meeting new friends.
Tuesday Morning 8:00 am in the Hilton "No Parking-Unloading Only" zone. Bikes are where we left them last night.

Besides the 380 or so of us riders that are on this tour, there are 12 Bagger builders and 12 Hot Bike Builders.

These 24 builders all have support vehicles...you notice my Softail is loaded up with what Mary and I need for our trip from Mississippi to Wisconsin and back.

Pretty much all the other bikes in the pic are "builders" bikes...they're not carrying what they need on their bikes...it's in their support vehicles.

The blue one to the left is Zach Ness's bike, representing Arlen Ness Bikes.

Here are the Big Wheel bikes-

This morning everyone left in smaller groups. We left with about 10 other bikes. Making our way out of the city-

After getting out of the city we had about 30 minutes of nice riding. Mary got this nice pic at about 70 mph on some county road.......

.....then it started raining...and getting darker up ahead. Pulling over to put rain suits on....someone looked at the weather on their phone.....

While putting rain jackets on everyone except myself and Mary decided to go to a restaurant to wait out the line of thunderstorms the radar was showing. (I think most of these riders were from Cali and not used to a storm now and then)

Anyway, to me it looked like the route was going to get some rain, but that the red on the radar was above and below where we were going.

So we took off.

Yep, we got a lot of rain (and we got video, but the camera was tucked away). But we saw no lightning. About half way to Nees HD we caught up with a group that was booking and we had a great ride with them.

Right before we got to Nees HD it turned sunny and warm. We had just worn our rain jackets, so it was nice to have the pants start drying out.

We stopped at Nees HD, had a nice lunch and visited with some of the other riders, and then took off for a 45 minute ride to Bettendorf.

Got checked in, had a shower, and went down to the "event" and looked at all the local bikes...met some cool people, and had some good pizza!

Default Re: Real Time Ride Report of DK Custom Hot Bike Tour

Wednesday morning about half of us met in the parking lot for a riders meeting before heading out to S&S and then on to Wisconsin Dells.

Some parking lot repair taking place at the same time. Belt needed replacing.

On our way out of Bettendorf, Iowa. The line of bikes were further than we could see in front and behind us.

This is Kain, riding his chopped 1981 Kawasaki 440. It beat him up pretty good, but he's young.

I was pretty excited to do the S&S Facility Tour. Last year the Tour at RC Components Facility was super interesting, and had a very good vibe.

S&S is in the middle of nowhere...a few miles outside of Viola, WI. It was a nice ride there. The S&S tour was less than expected, both the vibe and what they showed and didn't show.

They also did not let us take any pictures. We did get "special permission" to take a couple. Here's one, I will share the others after we get home.

Leaving out of Viola, headed toward Wisconsin Dells, we saw more than a few Amish along some great riding roads.

There are some great roads between Viola and Wisconsin Dells.

We were riding the sweepers at a good pace. Mary got a few unique pics...One of these days she'll get a pic of us dragging some hard parts thru a sweeper (she really doesn't like it too much).
If you come back though the middle of Illinois you need to make your way over to Moonshine, IL for a Moonburger there open from 10:30 AM to around 12:30 PM or till they run out of burgers. The last time we were there their was a tractor cruise in saw around 250 old tractors from all over the Midwest

Before Thursdays report...for almost a year, Ryan aka madchemist24 and I have been talking about meeting up on the road somewhere...Well, Tuesday night in Bettendorf we finally saw each other, and not just our bikes on the street. lol

Got to talk bikes for awhile. Great guy! Here's a pic near midnight-
Thursday morning everyone that rode the entire route each day, starting in Joplin, and ending up in Wisconsin Dells, got together for goodbye's'...til next year.

It was a fun ride, lot of friends from last year, and a bunch of new ones this year. Had a great time riding, seeing all the bikes on the trip, PLUS some very cool bikes at each of the "rallies".

Here's Mary & the Softail, Thursday morning, as everyone starts gathering.

btw, I have been Super Happy with how well the bike has been running on this trip.
Well....we went the entire trip with very little rain....just a storm one afternoon, and not a bad one.

Below is a pic of the bike right before we loaded it up to take off and meet up with Greg, aka, Misbehaven, and the ride with him up to Fuel Moto. As you can see the asphalt is dry. roflmao

By the time we got down to the bike there was a steady rain going.

After loading up, we took off for what should have been a 45 minute ride to meet up with Greg.

Well...it took a bit over 1.5 hours. 10 minutes in, it was the heaviest rain we've ridden in in quite a while. We were on a two lane road that was not draining well either, throw in some random lightning too. Happy to say we did arrive safely, albeit late. By the time we arrived it was just a light rain. Got no pics of the ride over...but we do have video that we'll be posting later.
Spent some time talking waiting for the rain to pass, then had a nice putt up to Fuel Moto to see Jamie, Brian and the FM Crew.
Everyone is just as nice in person as when talking with them on the phone. I think the first time I bought something from FM was 8+ years ago...a set of Rush Slip-ons. For the last couple of years DK has been doing business with FM and as many have experienced, they are a great company to do biz with.
This was the furthest north we're headed on this trip...about 1500 miles covered from Red Banks, MS to Little Chute, WI. Time to turn around and start heading back. Greg took off back home to Sheboygan and we started south.
Friday Ride Report.

We did not go far after leaving Fuel Moto...just a few miles. Mary never really got warmed up after riding in the downpour this morning.

Friday morning getting ready to leave out of Appleton...

At a gas/pee/snack stop. Not sure what Mary was saying.

Eating up some miles, heading toward the J&P Cycles facility in Anamosa.

Most of the day was overcast, but there were a few great cloud pics that Mary got...plus this one has an Ultra in it too.

First time we'd been to the main J&P location in Iowa. Lots of parts, but we did not stay long. Just down the road was something more interesting.....

    ...The National Motorcycle Museum.

There are hundreds and hundreds of bikes here. We were there for a couple of hours and it went by like a few minutes. It is right up there with the Wheels of Time in Maggie Valley.

I took over 150 pics. Here are just a couple.

Asphalt Angel Trike - A Tribute to Big Daddy Roth! Who doesn't remember Rat Fink?

    A Pristine 1912 Pierce. WOW!

I could not ask for a better riding partner. Mary does not like it when I scrape the floorboards, and I really do keep it to a minimum when she's on a bike with me. (don't know why I like scraping, but I do)

I asked her if she could please get some pics of us scraping at speed...what a trooper, she got a few really good ones. Here's one- I gotta get some of those magnesium strips that go on the bottom that really make a lot of sparks...but until then, here's a great pic at about 65 mph thru a curve-

Our stop for the night was in Coralville, IA. Here's a cool shadow pic as we head south.

Two more days before we get back home to Mississippi, via some great secondary roads.

    More pics coming!

    Saturday Ride Report-

We stayed in Coralville, Iowa Friday night. Had a nice dinner at a Mexican place down the road, then puttered around town a bit afterwards.

Woke up in the morning to see it had been raining and lightning for hours. Saw it was going to be pretty much gone by 11am.

At 11 it was just a light rain when we started loading up the bike....

.....Nice thing about the rain and it being overcast the first few hours of riding, it was cool. This was at a gas stop about 100 miles out.

It started warming up, then turned very hot (around 100*) later that afternoon.

At some point we passed from Iowa into Missouri....we took almost all country roads. This was not one of them. Just cruising, enjoying the open road.

Once we were off the beaten path, the sweepers beckoned some fun riding.

There were two roads in particular that I really enjoyed...County Road H and 19 between Hermann and Owensville.

It was a great day for riding!

One map dot we passed thru had this restored gas station.... who remembers the gas wars?

This is the kind of sign I like to see when riding!

    Another scraping pic...

It was a great day of riding some country roads in Iowa and Missouri!

    We stopped in Rolla, MO.

Tomorrow we'll finish up Missouri, ride the edge of the Ozarks in Arkansas, cut thru Tennessee and get back home to Mississippi!

    Sunday Ride Report.

Today we rode from Rolla, MO to home in Mississippi, almost all 2 lane country roads.

We traveled the 72 through the Mark Twain National Forest and the 21 through the Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

    Both fun roads!

In total we rode 9 out of the last 10 days, for a total of 2712 miles. Not big mile days, but mostly on 2 lane roads and many of them with hundreds of other bikes. A great time!

Today was pretty warm...the temps we saw ranged from a low of 95 to a high of 103. We kept our mesh jackets wet and were pretty cool the entire ride.

Leaving out of Rolla it did not take long to get onto the 72 and roll through hundreds of curves and the Mark Twain Forest.

This pic shows some birds up pretty high, but we barely missed them when we disturbed their roadkill lunch at the top of the hill.

I have been very pleased with how well the bike has been running the entire trip. Somewhere early in the day I noticed it was running a bit warmer than I liked. I stopped and took a minute to adjust the fuel 7% richer with the Power Vision. This dropped the CHT about 10 degrees and only dropped the mpg by 1 or less.

    Back to the road.

btw, I just checked and we averaged 37.2 mpg for the entire trip. Best tank was 41.3 mpg, and quite a few tanks were down in the low 30's. Those that have ridden with me know I like to twist the throttle. Plus, when we were on the interstates I tend to travel in the 75-85 mph range...and anything over 70 really drops the mpg.

    Mary in the mirror.

Sweepers combined with elevation changes are fun!

    New blacktop!

After stopping in Jonesboro for some Subway sandwiches, we left out and immediately rolled thru a pretty heavy rain and some lightning. I was getting ready to pull over after about 15 minutes, but then we were through it. No pics, camera was tucked away, but we got some good video that will show up in one of the youtubes.

We got thoroughly soaked, which was nice given the heat. Everything but inside our boots was dry within 45 minutes.

This next pic is of an SUV getting a ticket. I had rode behind him for almost 30 minutes at 80 mph, then my 'spidey" sense was to back off. About 15 minutes later we passed him getting a ticket. Arkansas is not as bad as Ohio, but their tolerance is pretty low.

Here we are crossing the Mississippi River for the 6th time on this trip.

After crossing from West Memphis, Arkansas, we are now in Memphis, Tennessee.

We are still in Tennessee, but only 45 minutes from home we see this....

.....Rain is one thing, but we were seeing lightning every 10-15 seconds. So we pulled into a gas station to wait it out. Mary had her phone out looking at the radar, I had mine out taking a few pics. I laid mine down on top of the saddlebag.

We were there for about 30 minutes before leaving out. Got some good pics, BUT....my phone was still on top of the saddlebag when we took off. I discovered that 45 minutes later when we arrived home. :icon_rolleyes:

The phone got run over...insurance already has a new one on its way to me.

It was a great trip, not only did we enjoy the ride, but seeing so many bikes, meeting so many like-minded folks, it was just a great time. Already talking about next years Hot Bike Tour.

Will probably have 5-10 Youtube vids posted over the next couple of weeks.

Hope you've enjoyed the ride with us.
