Default Stallion Alaska trip

I am currently in San Diego on our way back to Texas from our Alaska trip. I stopped off at a friends to do a little maintenance on my 2010 Stallion. During the trip which I strongly suggest you don't do on a Stallion, I lost my cruise capability, my brakes, my radiator temp switch, my horn and not to mention, the under cowling shields forward of the motor.

1. The dirt got the cruise cancelation switch so dirty I lost the cruise. I had to jack up the bike on its left side to get to the switch which is located under your left hip sitting on the bike on the bottom of the bike. Use SAFETY JACKS!

2. My rear brakes were relatively easy to replace. Normal Ford brakes. The front brakes weren't so bad either but I was told you have to remove the front wheel to change them,,,, WRONG.

I disconnected three brake line bolts on the top of the triple tree to allow the caliper to lower.

Then I disconnected the linkage to allow the caliper to rotate.

After that it was a breeze. Pulled the pads and reversed the installation.

3. When I lost my temp switch I called Richard at the factory and he trouble shot me thru it. He was dead on. I didn't think to look here. DAH! Just forward the right rear wheel is the switch with a blue wire connected to it on a metal water line. I grounded out the wire, the fan came on.

So I hooked up a switch to the blue wire to ground it out and when I entered a town, I turned on the fan. In some cases climbing hills I would also have to turn it on.

I just watched the temp gauge. Got me from Astoria Oregon to San Diego Cal.

I had to order the switch on line because NO auto parts stored could get it.

4. With all the stones and dirt on the ALCAN HIGHWAY my horn actually filled up with all that crap. It's located on the right side (sitting on the bike) just forward of the motor mount. I had to remove the forward shields to remove the horn. A Ford dealership was able to order me the exact same horn.

Installed it and the shields, all is good. BUT, prior to re-installing the shields, I had to sew them back together. The rocks cracked them pretty good at the curves.

5.

I almost forgot. Just prior to leaving Fort Worth Texas for Alaska, I had to replace the cap on the cooling system. Open the hood of your bike.

On the right side close to the firewall, there's a cap on a water pipe. Remove the cap and replace it with a hot water rubber hose with a bolt clamped inside it. DO NOT REPLACE IT WITH ANOTHER CAP. The cap tends to rot away because it's not hot water resistant.

ALL IN ALL, The trip was great but like I said, I strongly recommend not doing it on your Stallion. The chips in the paint will be costly that I now have on the front of the bike. I also have to replace two fog light lens which made the trip rather costly on the bike. Mileage to date is 9977 We still have another 1370 miles to get home.

Total miles for the trip is approximately 11347. Not a bad little trip. Next year, Nova Scotia, Canada. Can't wait!

Sounds like a trip loaded with problems. Hope you make it home without any more breakdowns. It also sounds like you still like your Stallion with more trips planned. Ride safe and have fun.

Silverdevil on this forum made the trip in '09 I believe. He also had multiple problems.
As a side note, the brake lines do not need to be disconnected to R&R the pads. Just disconnect the brake caliper rod and it will rotate around where it can be removed from the rotors. I chgd. my front pads @ 45K they would have went 100K.
There is also one of those caps on the bottom of the radiator, they usually go first .

yes I did do Alaska trip kinda of my break in ride, lost my cruise switch early in the ride and also it was 3rd or 4th time I lost it, I live off of a dirt road so it fills up with dirt all the time. TBMS did replace my brake master cylinder with one that has a built in switch for the cruise and no more problems with cruise and I am up to 50K miles, I did go thru at least 5 cruise switches before they replace the master cylinder. find a water proof switch to replace the cheap blue/white plastic one that is mounted at the bottom of the frame by the master cylinder under the back seat little to the left side of the bike. all other problems during the Alaska ride were minor except on the trailer I was pulling which had nothing to do with the trike.
I have taken care of the trailer problem because I now have a rack I mount on the hitch, also get better mileage with the rack cause the box on it sets just behind the trunk and does not get caught in the wind.

New to actually using the forum concept. Hope this gets to the sender.. Thanks for the input on the radiator cap.. Also, I told my mechanic he was wrong about disconnecting the brake line... I had him change the front tire before the Alaska trip. He disconnected the ling to do that. Upon pick up the lines were leaking. I did just what you said about rotating the rotor.

I see you are in Haltom City..
When I get back to Arlington.

Yes we'll have to hook up. There is also a fella named Gary in Denton I spoke with a while back with a Stallion. We 3 need to hook up..

Could you please tell me where the cap is located on the radiator. Did you have to remove the radiator cover to see it. Fixin to leave San Diego for Texas and it would suck if it blew then... Bhaelle

It is a rubber cap similar to the one under the hood. Lay down at the rear on the bike, look up at the radiator, you will see the cap on the bottom of the radiator on the left side. You will need a piece of 3/4" hose to make a new cap. Not 5/8" like the front one. Feel free to e-mail me at trikermarc@gmai l.com

I just got back from NAPA. They sell a set of two 5/8 or 3/4 water pump pipe caps for around $3.00. I figure these should do the trick as they're made for the heat and antifreeze.

You made note I believe there is a water cap on the radiator. I can't seem to find it. Could you give me a precise location please.

It's a short piece of rubber cap on the bottom left side of the radiator as you're looking at it from the rear. Mine has cracks in it, so I need to replace it before it starts leaking.

i love the look of your roof idea. I'm in California preparing to go back Texas. Is it possible if I could swing by your place to see the roof you have on your Stallion. Great idea. My cell is 817-307-2211
