    Default Freewheeler Rider Backrest

I haven't been able to find a rider backrest for the Freewheeler, only the passenger backrest.

Please help me find one. I have a fused spine and have a lot of back-pain as it is. If I can't find a riders backrest, I'm screwed.

Kind of hard to see, but there is a drivers backrest in front of the sissy bar. Harley dealer ordered it when I bought the trike. Adjustable fore and aft, up and down. Frankly I don't know how much it cost, dealer threw it in when I bought the trike.

One 'minor' problem, the adjustable bracket is for the taller Tri-Glide or Ultra seat. Backrest sits a tad high, which is OK with me.

    Good Luck

I saw an adjustable bracket for a deiver's backrest on HD's site in the parts section. I thought it might be optional (since it was adjustable) and a backrest that just slid down into the seat hole would be "stock". So, it looks like the bracket is the only way to install a driver's backrest.

    Thanks for the reply!

I put the adjustable backrest bracket on my Ultra, and Tri-Glide. I just asked for the adjustable on the Freewheeler, don't know if they make a stationary unit. REALLY helps this old man when riding. I went without for a while, sure makes a big difference.

Screwball, I see you have the luggage rack and pass backrest. If you put a sissy bar bag on the backrest would you be able to open the trunk or would the trunk door or luggage rack hit the bag?

Good question! I got the sissy bar so we could attach our T-Bag rolling suitcase when we travel. Usually mount it facing forward sitting on the passenger seat. Wife rides her own Tri-Glide, so we rarely ride 2 up. The sissy bar is very easily removable so I don't usually have it on, it fits easily in the trunk. SO, to answer your question, you have just under 3 inches of clearance from the sissy bar to either the trunk lid or the luggage rack.

I had a leather bag that strapped to the luggage rack on my old Tri, so it now resides on the luggage rack of the 'Free'. Not sure if it will stay, the jury is out on the look. Don't need the extra storage.

I am told that the adjustable rider rest mount is 54099-10 and a compatible rider rest would be 52501-09A. I want a rider rest; but, I also want a different seat as I think the stock and the current HD Sundowner are not to my liking (or, at least my butt's liking....) I kind of decided to see if HD or someone offers an alternate - I would really like one that comes with heat (live in Ohio). I love the HD air-cushion seats for the Touring models. But, the Freeheeler hasn't made the boat on that line as of this posting......

I wrote emails to both Corbin and Saddleman on the Freewheeler; Corbin replied by that the model was not supported at this time and Saddlemam never replied at all... That was sort of disappointing.

Also, I am hoping HD will maybe step up and expand their line a bit. I am sure they will offer more for the Freewheeler next year, as they sell more and continue the model on. It just that my butt and lower back will continue to nag me for a few more miles......

I have a spinal cord injury that left me with no butt muscles and I have pretty bad back pain. Bad enough that I take oxycodone all day for it.

Since you mentioned that HD will probably have more seat options next year and aftermarket may also, I may hold off on getting the tallboy seat for now. I definitely need the backrest but I'm wondering if I the wait on a seat, will it still be usable with the tallboy or an aftermarket.

Doesanyone know how comfy the tallboy seat is?

Does the adjustable bracket move front and back to accommodate different seats of adjust up and down?

While I find the Tallboy seat comfortable, I'm a little disappointed that it has no 'grip'.
As soon as I sit up in it, my butt starts to slide towards the tank. Constantly battling with the back and forth...

I read another post that said he slid forward every time he applied the brakes. You would think sliding forward wouldn't be a problem. But...

    Default Riders backrest

I have a riders backrest on my freewheeler. Got it from the harley dealer. It's adjustable the only issue is you have to install a sundowner seat because the mounting bracket will stick through the factory seat. My first long ride was from Kansas City mo to Dallas TX on the factory seat (I don't recommend it) a week after returning home I looked into the backrest and ordered it and the seat. It was a major comfort increase. Last weekend I rode from Kansas City mo to Denver CO I was comfortable but I watched the guy that rode with me (15 street glide) moving around and complaining about lower back and ass pain lol. He bought his this week. The mounting brackets for his looks exactly like mine did (might be the same)

I have to be very fortunate, I guess my butt is shaped exactly like the one used to pattern the stock seat on the Freewheeler. We took a 4000 mile ride through the South-West and I couldn't have been more comfortable. The only "mod" I did was to the backrest. After a few hundred miles I decided it was too high, so I cut the adjusting loop off, shortened the mounting arm and re-welded the adjusting loop back on. I can now adjust the backrest down to the seat, good lumbar support.

I had about 5500 miles on my FLRT with the stock seat and no rider rest. I must confess I was not fortunate like Screwball; I needed something else.... I tried all those "Test seats" at the Harley dealers and just did not find anything there I thought was an improvement. I finally decided to go with the Mustang offering with its associated rider rest.

The Mustang seat seems to be the best one for my butt..... And, I do appreciate their rider rest as well.

I don't have a way to post pictures . Have put over 7000 miles on it with stock seat since added backrest in 4 months and love it.

    Talking Seat pads

Try a gel pad with a sheepskin cover. That may fix your problem. I find it very comfortable on my Free. Also anyone check ebay for adjustable driver backrests as they have a lot of them.
