I haven't heard a peep out of Honda on the second go around Herb. You might ask a Honda dealer if there is any updates.. Maybe they figured out it wasn't really a problem after all...

We haven't heard from Honda since the first recall, and don't expect to. The dealer that did the inspection reported that the Champion kit we have de-links the brakes and the recall doesn't apply.

My Honda Dealer at Barrie On Ca. was pretty sure my Lehman Trike wasn't covered either, but after a though review including talking to Lehman all was done and completely covered.

ALL Gl1800's ever made have to have the recall work done. The rear master cylinder and secondary master cylinder gets changed and the system gets flushed with 6 cans of brake fluid. This includes trikes as mine, Champion, that the brakes are no longer linked. Just had mine done last week, 3 hour job. Call the dealer you trust, have them order the parts and make an apt to have it done. Several dealers around here have long waiting lists since so many need done. My dealer does 4 per day.

    Default Brake Recall

It was recently explained to me. The recall needs to be checked or done to ALL GL1800's even if they have been converted to a trike.

The problem is in the bleed back holes and not getting the brake fluid flushed every couple of years. With the type of brake fluid the Honda spec's call for, it allows moisture to get into the system and creates rust and corrosion that block the release of brake fluid from the rear brake caliper. That doesn't allow the rear brakes to release pressure and the brakes heat up and cause damage to the calipers and in some cases, a fire. The new parts they install have a larger opening to avoid that problem. You will still need to flush the brake system at recommended intervals to prevent corrosion, even after the recall has been done.

Even if you had your bike converted, you need to have a Honda Dealer look at it and check it out. I did the RoadSmith Trike kit and it no longer has the linked brake system but it will still need to be checked.

Some have been saying the if you had the bike converted to a trike, the Honda warranty is no longer good. That has been determined in court and is not true. My understanding is Honda will not warranty the trike part of the bike but basically everything that is from the factory will be covered by the Honda if the warranty is still in effect. These recalls make no difference if it is a tike or not.

Why do some people report the dealer just checked the MC and the SMC and said they were OK, and some say the dealer replaced the front and then others say they replaced them both??

Then they were cheated... the recall states that they BOTH must be replaced and the system flushed... no exceptions.
    It does not say...

Appears that some dealers maybe using the bike Vin # to get paid by Honda for work they haven't done...I saw this happen many times when I worked as a mechanic for a Ford dealership back in the mid 60's...

Not that cut and dry. Honda service reps are looking at it on a case by case basis. The recall includes the word "flow" which my Roadsmith doesn't have.

I have a copy of the document the Honda dealers work from and it clearly stated each trike is to be inspected then Honda TechLine consulted before any repair. If dealers do not follow those instructions they run the rusk of not getting paid for their service.

Yes, each of us should determine the requirement but when their dealer tells them their brake system delinked the SMC so no repair is required that is that. Those who got new parts when not required no have new useless parts and a fresh system flush. How their dealer files the claim it up to them.

Is that clear enough. If not ask your dealer to see their written instructions and read it for yourself.

Agree with Jerry...I ask my dealer about the brake recall & when I told him I had a RS...he said "no need to do yours"...I tried to help out members on another form about the info I had gotten from my dealer, by posting what my dealer told me, and the first response was "YOU NEED TO FIND ANOTHER DEALER"...all I say is "oh well"

The question still remains, even if the SMC may be capped to the rear, what damage may have been done to the rear master cylinder prior to trike conversion.
The way I read the latest revision of the recall is the rear master cylinder is also (meaning SMC & RMC)replaced
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the secondary brake master cylinder and the rear brake master cylinder, and flush the brake fluid, free of charge.

I have a Hannigan trike. Just had the recall done. They replaced both master cylinders. And put new brake fluid in it.

Yep. Even though it's triked out and possibly disconnected, Mother Honda wants it REPLACED.
Mine is in the shop right now having it done with a complete system flush...front and rear.

Here is what Roadsmith says on the subject. My experience was exactly what they said. http://trikeshop.com/media/docs/honda-recall-letter.pdf

I would like to stress that not all trike manufacturers completely disable the secondary MC when they disconnect it from the back brakes. Lehman leaves the secondary MC hooked up to the anti dive valve.

Default Update to my brake recall disaster!!!

WARNING ABOUT BAD DEALER / SERVICE DEPARTMENT!! Took my trike in Feb. 20th for the brake re-call, it was there 5 days and I had to call back to pick it up as they never called. This dealer is in Cleburne, Texas and was bought last year from another Powersports Company / http://www.freedompowersportscleburne.com/ so for those that have used this company BEWARE!! When I picked up my trike I noticed that there were 1/2 a mile since I left it.. curious so now I was concerned about what was done, they were to do the recall procedure along with changing the front fluid for extra $$ 100.00 total work. So as I said I paid the bill and went to go home, got on the trike and headed for the highway trying the rear brakes first and could tell no difference in braking. About 10 minutes down the road in a construction zone a truck carrying some barrels pulled off the road throwing plastic barrels all over the road.... panic stop time.... Nope wasn't happening so I stood on the rears and got stopped before an accident. Now I was really concerned as I heard metal to metal scrapping in the front end and I had just two weeks prior installed new brake pads on the fronts for the season, I looked around and saw nothing visible that was rubbing the wheel and I certainly wasn't going back to the dealer so being about 2 miles from home I went on home with the scrapping sound.... and drove my trike right up on the lift to investigate. What I found was scary, so I got my camera for photos for proof to this dealer as now I was pissed after nearly killing myself after their work. The whole front fender was now broken front the mounts on the top rear, both chrome reflector covers on each side were broken that cover the calipers, the R/H side caliper was okay but I could tell it was out of line with the rotor but that rotor was smooth, the L/H side was a total different story as it had been totally screwed up - was no-where close to aligned, had bolts in places that didn't fit, somehow one hose was twisted and to top this all off that side had a 4" solid steel plate installed from the outside of the caliper to that side fork leg. Where the hell did this come from as it was not a Honda part, so as I looked at this confusion I could see that when you would mash the lever for the fronts the main pressure went to the L/H side first and because of this plate it would tweek that caliper sideways and the caliper body would press on the rotor so that L/H side rotor was all scared up from the metal to metal. A SO-CALLED HONDA MECHANIC did this crap and I was PO'd to say the least but this was Sunday so I started dis-assembly and saving of all the wrong parts.... 7 - Bolts were incorrect, needed a NEW REAR half fender, NEW Rotor for the L/H side, 2 - caliper pieces that were now bent, disc pads 1 SET as the edge was gone on the L/H side, as I had a fender extension attached to the front fender that is not removable that also. As I started removing parts none of this side L/H was in line at all. So then I also noticed the bolts on the front legs were not tight and the axle bolt was also not torqued so the wheel was just moving at will to follow the uneven L/H side. So Tuesday morning at 9AM I am at the dealer and was so pissed I could hardly talk... I showed him all the photos and gave him all the bad or broken parts and said I need these parts to repair your mechanics work... he would never give up the mechanic that did the work, the he had the nuggets to ask for my credit card to order parts.... I said... buddy this is on you, I nearly died on the way home from your mechanics inferior work and now you want me to pay for parts that were not broken or missing prior to your mechanics job...you must be kidding!!! I expect these parts by the end of the week, I expect this company to pay for them, and you won't be receiving any referalls from me. You need to have trained workers if you are going to turn someones bike or trike over to them for work... his response - all our mechanics are Honda trained, I said let me talk to the guy that worked on my trike!! We'll he isn't here today..... I suggested he never be there again.... I would like for you to get your Honda Manual and show me in the brake section for the front where this 1" x 4" steel plate is installed.... at this point he wasn't winning any battle with me as I knew much more than him about what I was talking about..... He said I'll get your parts ordered as now most everyone had left the area including the store owner as the argument had insued... I said call me when the parts are in ..... never happened so the next Tuesday I showed up when they opened... here's the real clincher... the numb nut manager still said that the mechanic took that plate off my trike.... he ask if I rode my trike back up so they could put the parts on.... I just stared at this idiot, I also happened to mention that if they were paid by Honda for this recall and bleeding job its bogus as nothing was done to my trike, no secondary master, no rear master and no bleeding as it still had the pinkish purple Dot 4 I changed three weeks prior... so I have filled a Complaint against this dealer with Honda that I am sure will go no where... just thought area riders that you know should avoid this dealer and their famous mechanics.... I should be complete this week with the front re-build as I did discover a few thing that needed correcting that took extra time... and no I didn't pay him for the work, that what a stopped payment on your Credit Card is for..... I guess next time..... NO NEVER A NEXT TIME FOR A DEALER !!!!!!
