    Default Overheating Problem

On several occasions my Stallion begins to overheat. I can turn on the AC and after about a minute the temperature goes back into the normal range. I suspect the cooling fan is the issue and does not come on when the temperature calls for the fan to come on. Can someone tell me how to locate the control for the cooling fan and the next step.<br />

    Thanks,

Check the Stallion section for this issue and I think you'll find the answer to both the cause of the problem and a fix. Most of us have installed a secondary switch to ground the fan motor when the thermal switch fails.

Thank you for your reply; however, I did not find any information. Perhaps I don't know where to look. I am also interested in how to install the secondary switch you mentioned.

    Thanks again,

Wire from battery to fuse to switch to fan motor.

The sensor for the fan is in the water line in the right side wheel well. It will toward the front of the tire. Rick

Yep more than likely you just did not see the posts on this issue. The problem is the thermal switch for the fan. This switch is located just in front of the right side rear tire in the radiator pipe running along side the frame. You will see a nipple on the pipe with the switch mounted on it. This switch goes bad. It is a grounding switch. You can verify that this is the issue by removing the wire that connects to be switch and grounding it with the ignition switch on this should turn the fan on. Replace the switch and issue is resolved. The turning on of the A/C is a different route that turns on the fan along with the A/C compressor by a different wire going to the fan. The bypass wiring is simply connecting a manual switch to the grounding wire that goes to the thermal switch.

From the manual switch one wire would go to a ground the other to the wire on the switch.

Wire it so the thermal switch is still being used and you have an over ride if the switch fails.

The switch can be purchased on line the part number is 02-0221 but I do not remember the company I ordered it from. Can some else remember? I used a NAPA part FS110 to get me home but it is not quite the correct temp spread on the opening and closing.

right hand side after removing right tire you will see close to the front of the wheel well opening a long silver pipe with a switch on it this is your heat sensor switch , it has two wires connected to it with spade connectors, the heat sensor is checking/looking for a ground one side or the other of this switch is grounded . by running a simple toggle switch to a ground and one side of this switch you will be able to manually able to turn your fan off and on any time . easy test for this if you dont have a VOM tester is just run a short ground wire under the seat ( P.S you will be needing to remove seat ) find a ground bolt anywhere near with your key switched on simply touch the ground wire to the sensor one side at a time after finding which side when your fan kicks on splice ti to that side and insert toggle between the new ground and the switch .

as stated earlier with the switch in the off position it will work only as per dealer installed after engine get to operating temp. i use the switch while sitting in traffic or long lines to keep the trike temp cool i now have heard a few have placed the switch on the plastic in front of the drink holders but myself i like just under the edge of the seat where its easy to switch on and off mine just hangs there unseen , ive thought about mount it in the plastic side just under the seat but works well and i can test the fan at anytime even if is not running with the fla. heat it works and keep in mind there is no voltage just a ground so it will not short out.

As i use my trike 90% for parades i mounted the switch under the right side of the seat where it cannot be seen and turn it on as needed . keep in mind the factory switch works with water in the system do to the placement of the sensor on top of the rad return pipe is must be keep under was just as a car low fluid levels in the reserve coolant tank ( engine ) and rad must be keep at the high level for water and pressure to contact it, would have been nice if they had inserted the sensor from the bottom of the stell pipe. sorry for such a long description but i wanted you to be sure it something you can do your self.

Many thanks for the instructions. Something I will complete right away.

With some troubleshooting help from MotorTrike, I did find my problem was a bad ground from the coolant pipe to the frame.

The bolt that had been welded to the coolant pipe for the grounding strap appeared to be the issue.

    Thanks again.

Installed the auxiliary fan switch in both mine and my wife's Stallions today. Many thanks for your helpful suggestions. We mounted our switches near the pigtails where we plug in our helmets for our CB and other audio accessories. Ready to ride again! We are headed for Death Valley right after Easter as we have heard the desert bloom there is awesome.
