In a recent thread about VW trikes and texas registration, it was mentioned that the Slingshot could not be registered as a motorcycle in Texas. I found this information and wanted to pass it along.

Subject: Title and Registration for an Autocycle
PURPOSE
To provide information and guidance for titling and registering an autocycle.
DETAILS
Effective May 22, 2015, Senate Bill (SB) 449 added Transportation Code, Sections 501.008 and 502.004, establishing the definition for an autocycle and how such vehicles are titled and registered.
An autocycle means a motor vehicle other than a tractor that is designed to have when propelled not more than three wheels on the ground, equipped with a steering wheel, equipped with seating that does not require the operator to straddle or sit astride the seat, and manufactured and certified to comply with federal safety requirements for a motorcycle. Additionally, SB 449 specifies an autocycle is titled and registered as a motorcycle. All title and registration requirements for a motorcycle will apply to an autocycle.
Please be aware not all vehicles for which ownership documentation is available meet the definition of a motor vehicle for which title and registration can be issued in Texas, including those with an out of state title or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin. Based on information currently available to the department, the Polaris Slingshot, Morgan 3 Wheeler, and Vector Trike meet the definition of an autocycle and may be titled and/or registered as a motorcycle.
COUNTY ACTION
Process the title and registration of an autocycle as a motorcycle when accepting an Application for Texas Title, Form 130-U, and proper ownership evidence for such vehicles.
Further, please carefully review applications for title and/or registration for any unfamiliar vehicles to ensure they meet the definition of a motor vehicle for which Texas title and/or registration may be issued. If you are unsure whether a particular vehicle is eligible for a Texas title or registration, please forward a copy of the title application and any supporting documentation to your local TxDMV Regional Service Center for review even when the application is supported by an out of state title or a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin.

This does not have anything to do with Homemade VW trikes, as far as I know they are still illegal.
