Time to Go back to Three wheels

My Wife are moving to Three wheels. We have ridden our 2006 Gold Wing to it Final Resting Place in South Carolina I-95 on Memorial day weekend. We were in heavy rains from tropical storm Bonnie. When I went to pull of the road under an under pass the Gold wing Hydro planed and went in to the guard rail.

Due to having slowed from the heavy rain and having good safety equipment. Rain gear, boots, gloves, Helmets. My Wife and I we able to pretty much walk away. with minor injuries. My Wife had major bruising and laceration and damage to her Right hand. I had a fx right clavicle laceration of both forearms.

During a CT scan at the trauma center they found a large mass on my right kidney which was removed June 30. so during the recovery of both the accident and the Kidney Surgery we have elected to wait until spring to replace the Gold Wing.


Being new to the forum and to the trike world. I like to do home work be for I buy. Buying a Trike is a rather large investment for us. I have done some research and Am looking at three Trike set up at the present time. CSC. Champion trike and the Prowler by Motor Trike. I know any Trike I will consider will have to have IRS.


Looking forward to making New friends and many more mile of riding.

While looking, keep in mind plenty of used trikes on Craigslist. If you are converting a new bike, be aware that some warranties are null & void after conversion. Then there is also the stock trikes from HD. Let's just say that I have made full use of my 7 yr, unlimited mile warranty on my '10 TriGlide.
All said, you and the wife will love riding a trike.

Look at this way...If you didn't have the accident you would not have known about the Mass on your kidney and the outcome could have been much worst... Anyway hope you make a full and uneventful recovery... And with all the choices out there for Trikes, You'll have your work cut out for you ' I'm sure the members of Trike-Talk will help in anyway they can.

It has a CSC kit. I tried to post a picture but it would not up load. It is the Black on Black. We are looking for a name.

According to people on this Forum, CSC is a good kit. alittle wider than some others so watch it going up to the gas pumps or between cars etc.
Take it slow in the curves, and use both front and rear brakes to stop.

First I noticed this thread .... Glad y'all made it OK .... and found that mass early as well.

Interstates are pretty standard in most respects, like underpasses having guard rails that funnel errant traffic back between the support columns. Pulling over under a overpass on a Interstate because of rain is about as dangerous a place as I can think of to pull off to escape rain. You place yourself within the funnel of those guard rails.
Add to it the fact that drivers in traffic approaching have their visibility limited by vehicles ahead as well as the mist thrown up by tires, and all this in a torrential rain that was enough to hydro plane a heavy MC on skinny tires?
Far far better to have planned ahead, paid attention to forecast, and made alternative plans .... or at the very least .... have got a room .... or waited it out at a Stop In, Sheetz, Liberty, Q-T .... etc .... someplace out of harm's way. The bike would have gotten no wetter in the parking lot.

Congrats! You'll love it.As you enjoy your new trike, do keep in mind that your trike has much wider rear tires than that bike did .... "times two" .... and it will hydro plane a bit easier .... rear first .... especially when tread is worn some as they it has much less actual weight per square inch of tire contact patch.
Black on black is pretty .... but not as visible as say .... red, blue, .... or white or yellow in inclement weather.

Thanks for the reply we had done the things you mention early in the post. We had stopped 2 times early in the trip at Sheetz and a Truck stop. We had also rerouted our trip to stay out of some of the heavy rain. That day was not a steady rain more bands of rain with sun shine in between. Yes and Hind sight is always 20/20. We could of loaded the bike on the auto train in Virginia and gotten off in Florida. Thats the trouble when you work and having Vacation planed and rooms booked. I not sure how much further we would of been able to go that day any way. I guess the Interstate was closed due to flooding in some areas. I know we have been on many trips and have ridden in the rain. Some time this turn out to be thousands of mile ridden in the rain. It is never fun but we could sit at home and look out the window and say well the weather man got it wrong again. Then I look at what happen and Say God had a reason to have this Accident. When we were in the trauma center the found a mass on my right kidney which was un symptomatic. I less than a month I had my Kidney remover. I was a cancer which was encapsulated.

Thank you for the advice on the hydo plane of the two wheels. I know a tike will handle completely different than two wheels and there will be a learning curve. We have had several out for test rides. The CSC seamed like a very stable ride.

Great that y'all are both with us. It could have been much worse. I keep waiting for the Mo Co to go IRS ............. Some day if I am lucky. Otherwise I may opt for a GW trike at some point.

My wife and I took ownership of a 2014 level 2 gold wing with CSC trike kit this week. We haven't got it home yet and with winter being here it may be a month or two before we can ride.
I want to tank Every one that posted information and help make the decision in this up grade.
I know there will be a learning curve on riding the trike over two wheels. I have been able to take a few trikes for some test rides but having one out by my self will be different. There are a lot of questions I am not sure about going from a Level one to a level 2 with the GPS and the up dated audio system are some of the things.
Some of the other thing to consider are going blue tooth over the wire mic for the helmets. Would the blue tooth take the place of a CB radio with group travel? I also love to listen to music on the highway we were using the Bike MP3 Player. (I know many don't like it). It worked good on the 06 Wing and I was happy with it. I had 3 sd card loaded and we could go though a couple of long trips before starting the rotation over.
I am sure getting use to adjusting the ride for the Misses will take a little time. There will also be a lot of comfort measures that need to be looked at for the Misses also. She was used to having arm rests a driver back rest and foot peg with the foot boards. These are all more or less necessities on long road trips 400 to 600 miles a day.
I know I will have many questions I am happy to be part of this group because I know Gold Wing riders love there ride wand love to share the experiences and knowledge .
