Default Axle stabilizer rod came off from one end

This is the cross stabilizer rod with heim joint on each end just behind the rear axle. It is connected on the right end by slipping over a shaft welded to a bracket welded on the back of the axle housing. The left end is connected to a bracket welded to the frame with a bolt thru it.

I assume the right heim joint is held onto the shaft it slips over with a stud bolt into the shaft. Does anyone know what washers or anything else may go on there before the stud bolt? Since mine came off, I'm not sure what was holding it on.

Any help will be much appreciated!

I think you are talking about the anti-roll bar. Haven't seen anything on that component on this forum. It would probably be best to call Richard at TBMS for guidance.

Trikervet, thanks for your reply. I emailed tech support at Motor Trike this afternoon for help since they are closed on Friday afternoons to phone service. I'll call Richard next week if I don't hear from the email.

Yeah, I don't think anything broke. It may have been a bolt through that shaft with a couple of safety washers and a nut on the bolt holding the rod on the shaft. After the bolt broke or nut came off, the rod just slipped off the shaft. John

I took pictures but they are to large to upload on this forum, send me your e-mail address thru a PM and I will send then to you. It looks like a 3/8 or 7/16 bolt about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 in long, with a nylon type lock nut no washers. That is if I'm looking at what you are.

Well folks, mine came apart on me also a week and a half ago while on the Road! The front connection bolt either broke or the nut came off and when that stabilizer bar came Loose! Well let me tell you that the pucker factor went way up ! It contacted the drive shaft and I thought the rear end had came apart. With the help of a couple of friends we replaced the bolt, locking washer and I was back on the road. Unfortunately my trip was cut short by illness of my riding buddy so we headed back to Florida early. Once home I contacted TMS and replaced the bolt again with a shoulder bold, lock washer and locking nut. When the trike is level and on jack stands, the bar should fit evenly with the bolt fitting in the hiem joint easily. I had to extend the hiem joint by 1 1/2 turns while on the road but when I questioned Thoroughbred Motorsports they said not to readjust it if the bolt slid in easily. There should not be any tension on the bar.<br />

After reading the original post, My problem was not tied to the axle. The stabilizer bar that runs diagonal from the top of the rear left ladder bar area to the front of the right ladder bar area is the bar that I had come loose on me. Replacement bolt had to be put in from the bottom as it is too long to put in from the top..

I checked both of those rods today and they were okay. I can see how the rear one might work loose as it is just a bolt through the heim joint and into the frame. I may drill a hole in the head of the bolt and safety wire it. While I was under there, I checked my diffy oil, it was just a little low.

Question about the stabilizer rod with the heim joint: When I push down mostly on the left side rear of the trike I hear a thumping sound like there is something loose. When I get under the trike and have a friend shake the trike the only thing I can see making any noise is the stabilizer bar. I can hold the bar and then shake the trike the noise goes away. Can any of you tell me if you trike makes this noise or is it just the heim joints and that is normal?

    Thanks

    Ed

I don't hear anything that sounds loose when I shake it. Before I took it to the factory three years ago, I would hear a pop from the REAR when I jacked up the FRONT.

All the factory did was to tighten the rear ladder bar bolts that go through the heim joints VERY tight.

MJ's did a little before I changed the shocks. Doesn't now. I figured something I could not see was rubbing because of the worn shocks.

Thanks trikervet and Gorilla for your information. I'm planning on changing the shocks and while there I will check out everything in the area. You guys are great and thanks once more for your help.

I still haven't reattached the stabilizer bar to the differential on the right side from the frame on the left side. While I was riding before I knew it had come loose, when I would hit a bump, I would hear a quick rubbing sound in the area of the left rear tire.

I'm thinking that will go away after I get the rod reattached.

The bar is what holds the rear axle in place from moving side to side. So I'm sure when it is reattached that movement will go away.

I finally found time this afternoon to reattach the rod that came loose from the right side. The heim joint slips over a small shaft welded to the differential. It is retained on that shaft by a 5/16" grade 8 bolt, flat washer, lock washer wth blue lock-Tight. The bolt screws into the threaded shaft.

After replacing the rear shocks most of the noise I was hearing has gone away. I can still hear the stabilizer rod when I shake the Stallion hard.

I don't hear anything except a small squeak when I bounce the rear of my Stallion. It only has 6500 miles, so shocks are still good.
