    Default Transmission Oil

It is time to change oil in the transmission. Here in Texas it is pretty hot most of the year. Is 75/90 good or should I go to 85/140 weight oil? To me it seems the 85/140 heavier oil would be better but I would appreciate some input from others. In any case I want to use real transmission oil and not Syn3. Just not sure about the weight.

    Thanks,

    Sunman

I'm in PA and use Bel-Ray 85W-140 all year round. Red Line is another great choice.

Eions ago, 80s-90s, the tranis made wining noises or just plain noise. Along with 80-90 gear oil, we added Wynns gear additive or Slick 50.
With today's trans you don't need additivesbue to better gear mesh, tolerances ect. So as long as it gets lube, it's happy. Personaly I am a gear oil person also.

New to the trike world! At what mileage should you change your transmission oil? Mine now has roughly 15K on it. Thanks to all who share an opinion or can tell me what Honda recommends! Thanks, Rick

Your profile shows you have a 08 Honda GL1800 Goldwing/ Hannigan Trike Kit. If you are asking about it and not a Harley:
You now have 15K on the engine oil as Gold Wing trannys share the same oil the engine uses.
Don't want to start another oil thread but must say I have had the absolute smoothest shifts up and down since I started using Mobile 1 T4 for motorcycles
If you are asking about a Harley, when I owned mine, I used Syn3 in all 3 places and was very satisfied.

Thanks for all of the replies! Looks like I will be changing to 85/140. Now if I can just find Redline around here some place. Used to run it in my other Harleys but don't remember what weight it was. Also, local source for it is no longer here. May have to drive into Houston.

Used to be we used Redline Heavy Shockproof in the trans. They advertise it as having film thickness of 75W250 but fluid friction like 75/90.

Now Redline has a "VTwin" heavy shockproof oil for trans that is rated at 90W.

I've found the best prices, and ease of not driving around looking for it, to be ordering it off the internet. 5 minutes on ebay and you can find someone with it on sale at good prices.

Here's another vote for Redline, my dealership carries it so it makes it very convenient.

Redline was what I ran in mine as well. It seemed to do a very good job and I think it could go much longer between changes but stayed with the recommended just in case. Know what I mean???

I change the tranny oil every 10,000 miles. I do Primary and engine oil every 5,000 miles.

Very seldom does one get something that works the best that is cheap also. Redline works quite well, also Bel-Ray. But I also must put Amsoil Harley transmission fluid here also. They also now have a primary oil for Harley.
Using the best oil in both areas makes a big difference in noise & shifting, & wear.
I look at it like what Harley recommends, Harley also sells. Also they aren't in the lubrication business, they are in the parts business though......

I have used Amsoil 75-140 all year long.

The dealer recommended and put Bel Ray in my Ultra once back in 04 when I had a 6 speed put in. It was awful.

    Default Transmission Oil

Amsoil sells a good Transmission oil. It works for me. Its quite and easy to fine neutral, and doesn't make that Harley first gear clonk to loud. Shift gears easy. Its pricey but according to the owners manual the next change is 20 k miles. However Redline is very popular with most riders. enjoy the ride and good luck in your choice.
