High pitch whine

I have a 2006 GL1800 with a Champion kit installed in 2006 by previous owner. In fifth gear i hear a high pitch whine which I don't hear in
any other gear. Shop manager texted Honda and they feel a bearing is failing. Bought bike with 30,000 miles now has 37,000. SM said engine will have to be pulled and transmission opened to fix the bearing. I am wondering if at that time all bearings should be replaced. Any ideas will be helpful. Thanks Dave [sddarkwing]

If I was having it done I would have the transmission gone over with a fine tooth comb and only spend the money once on all that labor.

I agree with DWATC. While it was tore down I would replace as much stuff as I could afford. I'm sure it will be cheaper to go ahead and replace what should be replaced! I guarantee you it will be cheaper than paying the labor to pull the motor and transmission again!! Just my opinion!!!! Rick

1. That's not a lot of miles for a transmission bearing to go out.

2. I would think a bad bearing would make noise all of the time.

3. For what it is going to cost I believe I would wait until there was proof positive it is in the transmission. All you're out is a couple of parts if it fails because the labor isn't going to be that much different then tearing into it now.

Question for your dealer: If you tear down the trans with me watching and there is no bad bearing, then it cost me nothing and you put the bike back together correctly, eh? See how strong his belief is.

Thanks for the replies. Yes SM wanted the field rep to have a chance to test the bike as well. They want to make sure that it is not in the drive line. So time will tell. Thanks Dave [sddarkwing]
