    Default Hitch cargo box

I'm about to take delivery of my first trike (2015 GL 1800 with Roadsmith HST). Instead of having to tow a trailer I would like instead to get a waterproof cargo box & mount it onto the hitch (will require welding a mounting bracket onto the hitch I suspect). I would appreciate any ideas-Thanks

    Hi Mark.
Many moons ago when my wing was 2-wheel, I welded up my own rack to match a cargo bag that I already had.
The receiver will take 1" tube, sides were 1" angle and bottom was expanded metal. I then powder coated it. Here are some pics:

If your trike has a receiver hitch, you could get the bags they took off your bike from the installer & fabricate a box from them that would go right into the receiver. And it would be color matched to your trike. There is one or more "how tos" on one of the GoldWing forums--maybe Steve Saunders or GoldWingdocs? Not sure which & I don't have time to hunt it up, but I'm sure you can find it with some searching. If I have some time later I will try to find it & post a link. Stan

Kuryakyn makes a bracket and rack that bolts to your receiver ... no welding and it's light weight.

A friend of mine built one exactly like the pics except he welded it to an extra flat hitch for the receiver problem solved.

Saw a setup recently in Sturgis where the fellow welded a bar back from the receiver hitch and mounted 2 Harley saddle back side by side on it. Was a pretty neat setup. Took a picture but have changed phones since then and have lost it....trying to see if any of my other buddies took a shot or may somebody else posted in on the many forums I surf.

This is the fellow on the other forum that was building them.I know awhile back he was wanting to sell out so he might either have a good deal or be willing to supply instructions. http://www.rakoons.mynetworksolutions.com/

    Stan-

Thanks very much for all the time you are spending helping me in regards to a hitch carrier. That's what is so great about this forum-people so willing to help out!

The link you provided me is indeed very helpful. Using my own saddlebags just makes a lot of sense & I will just feel better about making good use of my perfectly good new OEM saddlebags that came with my bike.

    Texan-

I would certainly be very interested in a px if you locate one.

It probably wouldn't be a good idea ($ wise, that is) for me to attend a big rally like Sturgis for the likelihood of my seeing too many things that I could do for my bike!!!

I built one just like the picture on the cover page. I bought 2 saddle bags that were removed when building a trike and built a frame to set them on. I goggled the top cover. Cheaper to buy than to have made local. Did in spare time through winter.

I also had the box made, so it fit my two wheeler w/o any problems, now that I'm having my bike triked out (should b completed in a couple of weeks) I'm going to put the box back on again...........It's great for carrying extra jacket/raingear/ect.ect

I'll let you know how it works in a couple of weeks

Back in the '90s when we had just the '85 GL1200 I outfitted it with some tabs under the saddle bags tied into the hitch reciever frame work and a couple under the travel trunk incorporated with the travel trunk set back adapter I also made.

I made a couple of carriers, one small for a cooler only .... and another for a "Action Packer" cargo carrier or "tote". They come in colors .... I have several. I use a black one on the bike, even attached a plate on the back side witrh reflective markings. It sits across the rear, down low, is easily taken into a room, packs a lot, is reasonably water proof and .... you can preline it with a plastic bag and pack with cloths like Samsonite.

On the 1200, the rack attaches with 6 x 5/16" bolts using either wing nuts and a hitch pin in a hole if removal in a hurry is anticipated ..... or I use nylock nuts and leave in place for a trip. Since the bigger AP box blocked the lower tail lights, I added aux lights with same functions on a bar that attaches with upper bolts and plugs in and a flip of a hidden switch cuts off lower ones and activates aux lights for tail / stop.

When we bought the '97 Trike, the original owner gave me the OEM saddle bags, I considered making a frame to use them on the trike and even had a set of blue prints.

But I quickly gave up on it because while it looks cool to have them matching (and they were even scalloped by the pinstriper just before the bike became a trike in 1998) I just did not find the huge overhang out back so appealing.

I set about removing the Lehman Flatbar drawbar and made a reciever that goes in it's place and even extended the main bar to attach to a crossbar added where the OEM center stand once lived, the reciever is thus very well supported. It uses 1-1/4" recepticle.

I then built a new carrier rack for the same "Action Packer" as used on the 1200, but this time I added some tail lights and a tag mount to the carrier. It get's power from trailer plug. It pulls the weight in closer, less overhang, and is easily stored in a motel room if desired.

    Default Hitch box

Here is a link to a friend of mine that made his own for his 1800 http://goldwing.eurekaboy.com/hitchrack.htm
The parent address: www.eurekaboy.com contains several GW mods including our building of my old champion trike.

    Default Had one made.

I went to the local high school welding shop and had them make one. Cost $20 as they used leftover materials. Did a great job.

I also made one out of an old plastic 2 liter Coke crate. I took a plate and bolted it to a receiver bar and then bolted the plastic Coke crate to it.

Works well. Cost was $16 for the hitch bar (plate metal was scrap) got the old coke crate from store.

Where did you find the top cover at and does it have the zipper like the one pictured?
