I would get the Tri Glide unless you want a sporty carry very little machine that you will have to add some wind protection for if so inclined. The Tri Glide is like a three-wheeled Barco Lounger whereas the Freewheeler is a Road King with three wheels and a small trunk. Different rides for different folks. I LOVE my TGU and as much as I like sitting on the new 2017 FW with the M-8 engine, I would still get the TGU.

I've ridden both and own a 2014 TriGlide. I can't give up my creature comforts .... especially because I am more often riding with my wife. I have over 24K miles on my TriGlide. My wife would never be comfy on the FLRT.

The only real way to know is to ride both of them and see which one you like better.

If it is purely a financial decision (you like them both the same), I would go with the one that had the most warranty on it.

I had a 2010 tri glide FLHXXX with an added tour pax. I now have a 2015 freewheeler. The freewheeler is faster, lighter, and better handling. Also the trunk on the freewheeler is about the same size as on the tri glide. The freewheeler does not have a tour pax but a bag just as big as the tour pax can be purchased from Harley or elsewhere. A Memphis shades bat wing quick remove fairing is available for the freewheeler and can be removed in seconds whereas a tri glide fairing is fixed. Because of this front end work is easier and a way less expensive. My wife and I have done numerous trips of 3,000 miles at a time and she finds the freewheeler just as comfortable as the tri glide. I would never trade my free for a tri for those reasons. also because the free is lighter the gas mileage is also better.

2015 freewheeler bought June 2015 now has 26,000 trouble free miles (not KMs)

I love my 17 M8 trike because of the creature comforts, but if i rode solo i would be on two wheels again. There is a big price difference between the two granted, but you are going to spend over $500 for a sissy bar and a windshield then if you want increased storage another $400-$500 for a luggage rack and a descent bag to put on it,then if you want tunes there is another $750 or more, but if you dont need all that stuff then the Free Wheeler would be the way to go.

Hi Gerald - I am going through the process of Tri Glide vs Freewheeler - and my riding will be solo about 50% of the time - if I purchased the Tri Glide I would remove the tour pax when riding solo.

I thought the Tri Glide's trunk was somewhat larger than the Freewheelers - do you know the cubic capacity of each?

    Hey Ron
I don't know the capacity of either trunk but in the parts catalogue from Harley it says the luggage bags to fit inside the trunk fit both bikes.

Gerald, Several sites list the 2016 Tri Glide main trunk capacity as 4.4 cubic feet. The Freewheeler is reportedly 2 cubic feet.

I see you are right in the capacity figures (I looked it up also) but for some reason, maybe because the free loads from the top and the tri loads from the back I seem to get more in the free trunk than I did with the tri

Gerald, I think you have hit upon why it "feels" like the FW is easier to get things into it as the FW is like a top loader. From a volume standpoint, it appears undeniable that the TGU has more than x2 the capacity but is a back loader. I would suspect that they both have about the same horizontal floor footprint.

It was only when I carefully studied the pictures how Dennis and Karen of DK Custom Products loaded their TGU for extended trips with a lot of small nylon bags that I was able to get full use of the main trunk compartment on the Tri Glide. I am also able to stuff a number of large Harley sourced soft bags into TGU. The OP also needs to factor in the top trunk capacity of the TGU and the fact that it also acts as a backrest for his passengers.

Most of the motorcycle mag review sites suggested that for touring, the TGU is the way to go and the FW is more designed for shorter jaunts and mentions a bit harsher ride from the FW. I have not done a comparison ride on a FW so have no first-hand knowledge of the ride qualities. Of course, anybody can be creative and get uses out of a machine that it was not characteristically intended for. Bob

I went from a 2009 TriGlide to a 2015 FLRT. I quickly found that although the trunk was smaller I could get the same amount of stuff in it. Like Gerald martin said, it's because the FLRT loads from the top. Makes using the entire trunk easy.
Can't say that I will never go back to the Tri Glide in the future, but I can say that I really enjoy the FLRT and how fast it will take the twisties!

Keystone, since you have owned both trikes. Is there any credence to the magazine reports that the FLRT rides a bit harsher than the Tri Glide? I know it definitely has the advantage of lighter handling which everybody who has transitioned from the TGU to the FLRT has reported and most like.

The wife and I have owned both and yes the Freewheeler in my opinion rides a little harsher. Yes, the handling on the Freewheeler is lighter feeling it's a lighter trike. The Freewheeler is not bad two up with the right seat but the Tri Glide is hands down the way to go for all out comfort.
