Jay, it's always in the eyes of the beholder, man, if it works for you, then I'd say stay with what works and don't fix it.
Like anything there is a right and a wrong.
You cant loose changing oil at an early interval.
Id sure not wish to do any damage by leaving it in too long though.
So I happen to like hearing from others their thoughts on the subject.
Back in the early 2000s I had my oil tested by an independent lab.
I used to road race.
I was told back then that most good synthetics don't loose viscosity due to age.
It just plain gets dirty and builds up acids, amongst other nasty things.
So change ones filter often and don't worry about the oil all that much.
Its the acids that cause the harm. Long term.
12 to 15K was the then recommended oil change interval for me and my racing engine.
Now if a bored and stroked small block can..........not should go that long.
How long can one go with a 1800cc mid revving flat 6??
I dunno!!! My V-Twin cant go over 7500 miles. The oil by then looks like tar.
But to change at less then 7500 miles sure seems to me to be wasting money while doing my engine no harm??
The 3 to 5K miles is and its just my opinion. A waste of resources. If a full synthetic. Yet Ive been changing the GW at 7500 miles to be on the safe side. Im due to change my oil this weekend. 2 changes so far in 4+ years and 15000 miles.
Id just like to know from folks here what they do with this particular engine.
Not some 20 year old pickuem up.
That has no real relationship to a GW.
To me there is nothing more annoying then to have spend money on an oil related failure.
All good points, and since when have we heard of an oil related engine failure? I like to run mine about 6K, then change oil (regular dino) and filter, if I run over, not losing any sleep, just use that 'cause it's easy to remember. We all know Honda is saying an 8K change on the gl1800 is fine. Think about it, that's at least 3 coast to coast runs with a few miles left over.
I'm just old but agree oil and filters are cheaper than repairs. I use T6 Rotella for 18 bux a jug and I bought 20 HONDA OEM filters for 5 bux a piece from a forum member who sold out. So for 23 dollars, a cold beer and a few minutes I have the oil changed. I try for between 4 to 5K miles both on the Honda and the Harley. The Harley gets 50 weight Schafer big twin motor oil.
