Default Can any one suggest --- help.

This just maybe a problem that someone else has had. I have a goldwing 1800 2007 with a motortrike adventure conversion. Just recently I have had a problem with some sort of missed gear noise (feel). It doesn't happen regularly to be able to identify the noise( feeling). I will be driving along and then change up into fifth gear , which will engage Ok, but nearly immediately after there will be a sort of thump from the rear axle, Just as one my get when a gear is missed. But this time the gears had gone home safely on the change. This can also happen not just on the gear change. In a days ride it may happen once or twice. and sometimes not at all. I am just wondering if the gear selector on Fifth has become worn etc.

It only happens in fifth gear.

If it is the fifth gear that has some worn part this would mean a strip down?

Any help would be appreciated , as always.

Go to the website www.justwings.com and read what Greg has to say about your problem.
My Trike is there being repaired now.

Read about GHOST SHIFTING SYMPTONS.

I have ZERO experience with this and have no real help to offer, BUT that's one heck of a write up! Not the cheapest repair in the book, but it sure sounds like they know what the heck they're doing! Wish I'd had the logic of their explanation when my buddies were picking on me & I didn't do anything wrong!

Lets not jump to conclusions here.

This may not be transmission related at all. If the noise is indeed coming from the rear I'd say it is not for sure. The first thing that comes to mind is the four bolts that hole the drive shaft back yoke assembly to the differential input may have worked loose enough to cause strange feeling/sounds. Wouldn't take long to find out and just might save a butt load of $$$ and aggravation. The second thing I thought of is the differential or possibly a CV joint issue. I don't know for sure but a little investigation might help...

Aside from Jerry's thoughts.
According to Honda "ghost" shifting doesn't exist.
But you cant tell me that. My bike on several occasions more then I can count. Has downshifted itself from 4th to 3rd. 5th to 4th.
Your ridding along and hard accelerating and all of a sudden it will downshift itself to a lower gear. Some say its a bent shift fork, very expensive to fix on ones own.
There are many sites out there that explain it better the I have.
I have thought for a long time its the reason or at least one of the reasons the PO of my trike sold it.

You didn't say if it was dropping back to 4th gear or not. I had an '09 that periodically it would feel like it had "missed" or maybe as you say not shifted. I never figured out what it was. It normally would do it when reaching about 45 MPH from a stop. It never caused a problem and I put 115K miles on it before I traded it for my Hannigan. I know that's no help but sounds like what I had. It did start doing that with maybe 20K miles on it and might go for 2 months or might do it once or twice a day.

Default Rely to all who replied.

Thanks to all those who took the time to reply. it is always so good to get a broad span of answers.

1st I have recently had the drive shaft out to grease it , I do this after every second oil change. So am confident that it isn't the shaft that is loss. It runs as smooth as one would wish.

2nd. Having looked through the web site that 07Buecsc gave it gave some of the very symptoms that I am having. The feeling that I have missed a gear, yet was just driving along, but going back into gear instantly.

It only does it in fifth and mostly just after I have shifted up from forth to fifth. On the rare occasion it had done it when just riding along in top.

Has anyone had this fixed or should I have to continue to ride until something more drastic happens?

I think the sound/ feeling of a bump comes from the rear due to the effect of the change of position in the gear box being transmitted along the drive shaft. It really is only instant and the play within the mechanism would have to catch up.

The trike has done 41000mls Triked at (19000) without one whisper of trouble , having this problem really has got me worried and it sounds expensive.

I'm no mechanic but your last explinaton sounds exactly like what my '09 did and I just rode it. I couldn't see tearing into it and not finding anything wrong when if it broke I would have to tear into it and then woulld be able to find the price. Having said that it is JMHO and I'm in no way encouraging you to do something you aren't comfortable with.

Now having read through quite a few forums , including Goldwing owners , it seems that what is happening to my trike is indeed a so called 'phantom' gear change. The idea of having something just waiting to happen really makes me uncomfortable( something like your new elections LOL) . I will just have to see how it plays out.

Has anyone had the repair done by justwings? Having read through the information on that site it would seem that this company does know what it takes to repair this fault.

It would be quite interesting to know just how many bikes/trikes have been effected by this. Just reading the amount of those that have it would seem that Honda has some answering to do here!

I've only just bought my 2008 GL1800 Motor Trike just about a month ago.

On the 70+ mile ride home (no heel/toe shift installed), I experienced some shifting problems.

1. Missing up shifts which I reasonably attributed to my inexperience with the new trike.

2. I had a "stuck" clutch/gear for just a few seconds on that ride home. What I mean is the clutch lost most of its resistance and the gear shift did not click into the next gear. I had to toe it two or three times before it went into gear. Again I assumed that it was just me learning the shift methods on a new trike.

My previous trike (Royal Star Venture, Hannigan) had heel/toe shifting which I prefer so I also purchased the Kuryakyn heel/toe board kit at the dealer and the next morning I installed it.

Over the next couple of weeks as I familiarized the foot positions of the new arrangement I noticed these things as I rode.

1. The "stuck" clutch/gear happened once more.

2. As I rode I felt and heard the transmission (assumed it was transmission) do the clunk as though it had clicked into gear. It was not an actual shift, just the sound and feel as though it had. Almost like the upshift feel of an automatic transmission only with just a slight bit more "clunk".

That happened probably 5-6 times over two-three weeks. I did not think to remember what gear it occurred in but I feel that 4th was most likely the one.

3. As I was riding a few days ago the right mirror fell out of the housing and of course shattered. I called the dealer who ordered a new mirror. I was on my way to the dealer to have that mirror replaced and was about 15 miles from home when the trike stuck in gear and would not shift either up/down. Rocking the trike and shift attempts had no effect.

I phoned my cousin who came with a trailer, we loaded it up and drove it to the dealer. It is currently there being repaired.

Interesting point: When the bike was traded in as a two wheeler I asked for and was given an audit copy of the items the dealer did to the bike prior to them doing the Motor Trike conversion and putting it on the sales floor. One of those things was to rebuild the transmission!

Hopefully the dealer will take care of this for you, having recently rebuilt the tranny
As a footnote, might ask that some one that knows what they are doing works on it this time
Hate to say things like that but, if just rebuilt and still not right....................

As I had mentioned earlier. My bike does indeed ghost shift.
Its from 4th back to 3rd when it does happen. When it happens its after Ive shifted into 4th and then accelerate. It downshifts back into 3rd.
Its an unpleasant surprise but in my case its nothing really dangerous to my style of riding.
The costs to have it looked into is for me prohibitive vs the number of times its happened.
When Im in 4th and going 45mph or less and it downshifts itself. Its an rpm jump that in my case is still well below the redline.
Its a lousy feeling alright more of a surprise when it does happen but doesn't ruin my day.
My only real concern is it damaging the transmission. Which if it does and doesn't get me hurt when and if it happens. Then I guess Id have to spend the $3K plus.

Default Shifting issues and repair

A really good friend of mine recently purchased a used 2008 GW Trike from a local guy and he only test drove it around the neighborhood before making the deal. On his first ride to speed, he noticed that it jumped out of 5th down to 4th. Of course, he figured he missed solidly placing it in 5th and dismissed it. Then it happened again a little while later and then again after that. Not every time, but enough that he knew something wasn't right. He took it to our local trike garage who acknowledged his issue and recommended JustWings for the repair. He called and made an appointment for repair and loaded it up on a trailer And took it down to Zephyrhills, where the shop is located. I accompanied him to pick it up when the repair was completed. Although the repair was pricey, the knowledge of the owner was impressive and his shop was literally the cleanest I have ever seen! He took the time to actually show us his old 4th and 5th gears and explained how they interact and identified where the dogs were worn, which was causing the down shifting.

It appears that Honda made an error in design (which, of course, they will never admit), however, they redesigned the gears for the 2014 years model.
Anybody can miss a shift once in a while, but if yours is doing it more than sometimes, you might be affected. I don't think it is actually a very common malady, but it occurs often enough that it is a real phenomenon.
Note: The dirtbag who unloaded this trike with this issue flatly stated that there were no problems whatsoever with the trike prior to purchase, knowing full well it was having the shifting issue. The lesson here is to test any potential purchase thoroughly and take it by a reputable shop for examination prior to making the decision to purchase any used bike/trike!
