    Default Cruise Control Question

Went out for first actual ride yesterday. Engaged cruise and it sped up a couple mph then dropped a couple and settled in between the two. Is this normal? It held just fine for the 10-12 miles I had it on

YUP, pretty much SOP Brian!! You will also probably notice after climbing a pretty good incline the cruise will over compensate for a bit (usually just a few mph over) then settle back down to the set speed. Guys use to dink with the manual adjustments and some even had marginal success correcting cruise activation and holding but IMHO it is not worth the bother...

First bike/trike with an actual good cruise control. I'm not complaining after all my other bikes either had none or the cheap $30 throotle locks

I started with a Norton and then a Triumph ..... they had "grubbing screws" on the throttle control that you snugged up with your right hand fingers just enough to hold the throttle still if you let go, but loose enough you could instantly adjust throttle. Full release was with a twist of the screw.
First thing I added to my GL1200 was a Vista Cruise adjusted same, only it's faster to apply / release by a flick. When set, just enough friction to hold position.
Bought the '97 GL1500 trike in 2004, it has a cruise that works really well the couple times I've used it ..... but I prefer the Vista Cruise I added to it as well.
Have a Kuryakin (spl) rubber palm rest on both GLs as well.

In use, even when set, I'm adjusting throttle to load / grade / speed, just don't have to hold pressure to maintain.

I seldom use cruise on my 4 wheelers, but all have one .... even my '77 F-150 4x4 that I installed an aftermarket unit on in the '80s. Just a habit, I like to be in control and I can get better mileage usually.

Pretty well standard. Honestly, the cruise of my Wings have had a more narrow range than my Honda Civic.

    I noticed the same issue.

I tried a simple method that I found on-line a few years back that works pretty well to help compensate for the cruise lag/overshoot issue.

For acceleration,I first accelerate close to the speed I want. Then I push the "set/decel" button, then I immediately push the "set/decel" button a second time.

I found that this method can greatly reduce that annoying cruise speed overshoot while accelerating.

If I am decelerating by disengaging the cruise, braking or downshifting, I push the "set/decal" button, then immediately tap the "resume/accelerate" button a second time when close to the new cruising speed.

I found that this method can greatly reduce that annoying lag time while decelerating. I can actually feel the cruise catch faster.

Experimentation a few times will be the key and the method will become second nature quickly.

Glad to hear its normal. I Know there's an adjustment for the cruise under top shelf or dash but not sure what it adjusts. Best left alone. Lol

I wish my ol Jeep only did a couple mph! I've gotten to where I don't even mess with cruise control at all.. She's WAY too touchy..

But, like the others said, this is completely normal for about every vehicle with cruise control.

I'll relate an interesting story with regard to cruise control. In August, 2006, I jumped on my 2003 Ultra for a afternoon ride up US 50. Got out of Owensville and set the cruise at 55. 20 seconds later it increased to 60. I few seconds after that I was doing 65. When it got to 70 I hit the brake pedal to disengage. Didn't disengage, went to 75. I hit the clutch and nothing. It had increased to 80. Finally at 85 MPH I pulled in the clutch and turned off the key.<br />
Thought to myself,, " time to trade this puppy"!.......

    And I did.

    Default cruise control

I have a gl2000 1500se with a champion kit. my cruise is right on. get you speed up, set cruise and it holds good. now the speed o meter is off 3 mph at 70 so I set my cruise with my gps if I want the mph correct.

Mine is just as bad if not worse. When I set the cruise at a speed and let go of the throttle, if drops a full 5 mph before it grabs. Then it goes over about 3mph. Then it settles in OK. I'm sure it irritates the people behind me, but it is what it is.

I've worked on many an 1800 and just about every single one of them has the cruise out of adjustment....some worst than others.

When I do an air filter change for a customer, I ask them if they want the lag in the cruise adjusted out while the shelter is off and most respond: YES!

I also ask if they want bug/mouse screen over their air intake horns and most respond: YES!

FYI, with the shelter off, there is a port on the left side that you can look thru with a flashlight to see the throttle return pulley.

On that pulley is an etched line...usually painted yellow. That line has to be dead centered in the alignment "V" next to it. With the shelter off, I can loosen the locknut and adjust the cable to till I see the line is dead centered in the "V". A couple of twists of the throttle to verify it's aligned and it's good to go. Once this is done, the cruise is dead on the very instant you hit the cruise button....very little lag or delay, if any at all.

Why Honda can't get em right coming off the line, I don't know. Practically every one I've seen so far is off to some degree.

Thanks for that bit of info lgjhn. I replaced the air filter last weekend. Guess I'm doing it again to find this cable and adj. if necessary. My cruise works but annoying speeding up, dropping then settling on between.

If you decide to go back in there, the port, or hole, to look down thru is on the left side. Get a small, but good, flashlight, because what you're looking for is waaaayyy down in there and can be quite difficult to see. The adjustment nut should be up top on the right side near the right handlebar. 10mm open wrench to undo the locknut and an 8 mm wrench to turn the adjustment nut. Actually, once the locknut is loose, you can almost turn it by hand while looking down the hole to see the alignment. Shouldn't take more than 3-5 turns to get it back in the center of the "V". Once you get in the center, I'd open the throttle a couple of times to make sure it returns back to the center.
    Hope this helps ya.

    Stan,
I've not had to do a 1500 so I cannot honestly type out an answer to your question.
The very few 1500s I've had experience with, seem to be ok with the cruise....not nearly as bad as the 1800s for some reason. I know my '15 F6B suffers the same "pain in the butt" lag as the 1800 Goldwings have. I just don't have enough miles on it yet to justify an air filter change to get in there and adjust it....but it's coming. I may do it anyway over the winter.
I suspect that the 1500 is a very similar setup & adjustment. The details could probably be found in a 1500 service manual if someone has one.

LJ--- My cruise doesn't "set" cleanly & goes over & under quite a bit on hilly roads. I have a manual & I will look it up. Thanks

Go to this site and follow these steps. I did it and it really works. I did it and my cruise engages as soon as you hit the button. Spot on.
