Default Stangas - Renegade LLS - Belt Replacement

    Woohoo... sort of..

Finally got round to replacing this belt.. 12 months later.. lol.. well almost.

I have got the bike apart, and old belt out (without cutting it) and went to put the new belt in and the damn one I ordered is a fraction too wide

The belt sizing options are the tricky bit here... I needed a shorter belt due to running out of adjustment. And now it looks like the only sizes in 1" belts are 137 tooth.. where I am going from a 140 tooth.. that is gonna be too much of a jump I think. They make a 139 tooth but it is 1 1/8"

It was actually quite straight forward.. I spent 2 hours undressing the bike, and another 4 hours stripping the Harley primaries and the trike rear. So the 10hours estimate was pretty good. I reckon I could get it back together in 1 day if the belt had of been correct.

    Anyway..

While its sitting here apart, and while I have to buy a new belt anyway.. is it worth converting to chain now?

I can see many benefits of chain here.. like not having to do this again if there is further belt dramas.

If I do convert to chain, does Lehmann or Champion have the rear drive sprocket I need? Or any direction in this area. The Harley side is straight forward. Just looking at the rear sprocket.

Cheers for all the assistance in the past

Can't answer if any conversion company offers a rear sprocket, but a 2 wheel MC sprocket should be fairly easy to adapt.
Converting to chain should make the final drive replacement both easier & faster for future change-out, but the belt has more positives over chain for me to make that "leap".

How many miles did/does your belt have on it if you know?
Typically the belts last much longer than a chain, but riding style and storage/maintenance also comes into play.

If you plan on keeping your trike vs selling/trading it, maybe chain drive is best for you.
Let us know which way you go on this, and good luck on your decision...

    Where have ya been ?
Summer is almost over for you guys.

You could use the 137 tooth by 1" belt (40591-07 HD) and change the front drive pulley from a 32 tooth to a 31 or a 30 tooth.

A 31 tooth will change your speedo by 3% which is less than 5KPM @ 100KPM's.

LOL... I know right.. I been screaming around on my ZX10r all summer.. Had the Harley out regularly but kept it close to town.

But yeah.. this belt was, as I said, not that hard to replace.. an am very glad that I tackled it myself.

Looking around for this belt and it seems they don't make one like what I'm after.
You previously mentioned that the OEM belt should be used.. so I wonder if the bloke that put it together did it wrong? I noticed your previous post on my other thread regarding the locating bolts on the bottom swing arm.. I am going to have a closer look at that tomorrow.

Your suggestion of the smaller drive sprocket has crossed my mind as it is all apart right now.. just need that special socket to remove that massive nut without damaging the shaft. This will also improve the power output of the big girl.. I have already replaced the compensator gear for 2 teeth less which made a huge difference, but lowering the gearing more would still help.

As for the speedo being out, I have to buy a new tuner box which allows me to alter the internal ratios between the engine and the gearbox to correct the speedo and allow the cruise control to function again..

Just keep pouring the money in hey.. LOL

Myself I would stick to the belt and maybe change the front pulley.

    reasoning?

That belt is tougher than boiled owl snot and will very likely give you longer times and miles between service needs and is much easier on pulleys than a chain is on a sprocket.

There will be those who may argue the point with me but my own experience is don't be cheap when it comes to a belt, Drop the bucks and don't get an aftermarket belt.

An aftermarket belt was the only issue that damn near left me walking 600 miles from home with no Harley store that dealt with anything but oil and tee shirts.

Even at that the belt started throwing teeth and the darn thing still limped me home. Try that on a chain and sprocket?

    Default Stangas project

    OUCH !

I agree with Paul here ..... what did I say ???
    You could go to chain.
A chain may do you well and is easy to change but that rear sprocket and to gain proper alignment (offset) is a b**** !
You can get a 23, 24 or 25 drive sprocket and use a 50 to 54 tooth rear sprocket.
I did a gear ratio check and a 25 tooth front and a 55 tooth rear or a 24 tooth front and a 52 or 53 tooth rear calculates to close to stock. (less than 2 KPH @100 KPH)
You want to use a steel 530 rear sprocket blank.
The people below make a 530 x 52 blank that you can machine pretty cheap (CH 1150-52 $89.00)

yeah I agree.. I will be sticking to the belt

My decision is now to revert back to the original compensator sprocket (I swapped it for a smaller one to get the extra power I needed as I couldn't use 6th gear due to the gearing being too tall) and this will then give me back my cruise control as the internal ratio of engine to tranny mismatched.. Then I am going to change the front drive sprocket to a 30T one as per the Harley tri-glide. This will then allow me the option to use the 137T x 1" belt that is a stock item.

So spent $400 on the compensator that will be sold as a used item now, but this then saves me upgrading to the TPS Tuner ($600) that would be needed to replace the HD tuner ($400) that I already own to allow the cruise control to work. With the 30T front I will regain the power needed for the use of 6th gear.

As mentioned the only drama is the speedo will be out slightly, but I can live with that.

    Nearly there,... LOL

Cheers for all your help guys
