Default Avon Trike Tire I hope its all its cracked up to be.

    Title says it all.
Took the plunge yesterday and ordered the trike specific tire.
I hope its ride comfort is all that's been said here.
Havent heard much about the long term yet really here.
Other then the one long running thread.
My MPA is so cupped I cant take the bouncing around anymore.
    Shot at 15K miles.
Prices are up on tires too since I 1st looked too.

    Default Avon Trike Tire

I cannot help you with long term use. I have had the tire since September 2016 with close to 4K miles. Tire wear so far is very good.

I maintain 37 to 38 PSI cold and ride mostly year around on South Florida roads.
The tire pressure will maintain a final operating pressure between 40 to 41 PSI running highway speeds. This tire pressure also feels the most ideal in combination with the Traxxion AK-20 front suspension system.

Any cold pressures above 38 PSI, the front end becomes harsh and more sensitive to the road surface conditions.

Your final desired front tire pressures may vary with your trike setup and personal preferences.

I have used MPA's rear tire mounted in reverse for a front tire for years. Always get 20,000+ miles out of them.
Decided to try the Avon front trike tire last year. WOW, what a change.
Smooth ride and steers better. I'll put another one on when the time comes.

It is a great tire. I have had both the MPA mounted in reverse and the Avon Trike tire that is on now. I got 23K miles from the MPA, but it did have a whine noise all the time and even started wobble at very low speed if you let go of the handle bars going into a stop light.

The Avon, I will buy again. I have about 24K on it and will change it in June before we take off on a long trip. I'll bet I get over 26K before then. It is the best tire I have had, smooth, quiet. Everything it should be. You will not have any buyers remorse that you bought this tire. I run 41lbs all the time, and have never had cupping on either one. My Trike is much smoother at 41LBS. I rode it once with just a few lbs softer and it felt rough. Funny how you can really feel you bike and tires.

    YES! What Tom Says!!!!

Jay, the tire age will probably get you before the tire mileage does. Unless you go to just riding the trike..

The ride, handling, and comfort improvement out weighs the mileage factor in my book.... I'll be doing the Cobra Trike Tire as long as I still can get them and still can ride...

I just changed my Avon Cobra Trike tire for a new one. Got 10,000 out of last one but I ran 85% of that mileage in the Arkansas twisties whichs eats tires quickly. My MPA and BT45 would only get around 11k miles if I stayed local.

Bottom line is that regardless of mileage I will keep using the Avon Cobra Trike tire until something better comes along.

BTW, cupping is not due to the tire, IMO, it's due to other front end issues like low tire pressure, worn bushings, stem head bearing and torque setting, fork service, etc. My last Avon had no cupping at the end. I also have Traxxion AK20 cartridges and Traxxion springs in my 6 degree raked forks. My forks are serviced every 25k miles per Traxxion's recommendations.
Wing with Roadsmith kit, Traxxion Ak20 cartridges and Accuride System.

Truthfully Im a low pressure type of guy.
I ran the tire at 36 psi cold. I knew Id sacrifice the tire for comfort eventually.
41psi which is where 99% would have it. With a short wheel based Motor Trike kit.
40-41 psi made the front so stiff the trike bounced all over the roads. Even with a front fork brace.
This is my 2nd Honda and the front suspension they use. Dampener and shock.
Im no fan of and very disappointed with for a top of the line bike. Little to no movement in mine.
It has progressive springs which doesn't help things.
They will be gone when I have to have the front end serviced.
Trike has 25K miles. Was a trike from day one.
Front tires here in Florida for whatever reason cup at some pretty low mileages.
Same issues with almost every bike Ive owned down here over the last 30 years. Regardless of running at 36 or 41psi.
I double darkside my 2 wheelers. Im not a novice. Even the 2 wheelers fronts cup on the left side no matter whos tire one uses. Between 4500 to 6K and front tires are shot by 8K.
Currently on my 05 Road Star front tires a Kenda rear and so far its the longest lasting front Ive had.
Going strong at 12K miles and 36psi.

Same roads as in the Delray area. Hobe Sound and here are basically the same.
I use the trike to commute to work daily.
So for me keeping it at 36 psi gives me the best feel and ride comfort.
Way to stiff a feel at 41 psi and 70mph. Hot is 44, 45 psi.
36 keeps me in the 40ish range hot.

Jerry as you know me well enough by now here. Being diabetic. My feet are a lot more sensitive to vibrations then most people. As little as there is with the GW motor. I take comfort over miles every time. A lot easier to get a new tire then.......... well new footsies.
The lower I keep the pressure the longer I can ride. I will ride till I physically cant. Wheels Im not. He amazes me to this day.
I did go back to the bike for a few months. Gave the trike a rest.
I road the trike yesterday and it just felt crappy. 6 year old tire 15K miles This is it. Order a tire.
I will of course try the tire at 41psi off the bat.
See how it goes from there.
Im just hopping its a smooth running tire.
I think Ill use beads rather then Ride-On too.
I have both on my shelf now, but its beads 1st this time.

This is an old argument I don't wish to get into please.
Cupping is due to a ton of reasons. In my defense my only possible self causal might be running lower pressure then most do. 36psi cold. Maintenance is not an issue in my behalf. It is well taken care of and checked more often then it needs to be by myself or my local mechanic.. Every thing is tight right where it should be. I wont sacrifice my safety over a loose neck bearing. Ever.
Most front tires on every bike or trike Ive ever owned here in my part of Florida. Over the last 30 years or so regardless of brand. Will wear and cup on the left side within 7K miles. Its a given in my case and something I mention but no longer complain out loud about.
Im just hopping this tire has a nice smooth ride, and handles well. How ever long it lasts and is better overall then other brands Ive tried in the past. It is my 1st Avon tire in 40 years of riding.

I, just today, replaced my front tire, but used a BT-45 that I've had for a year. Last spring I had a front flat at speed, far from home. Towed to shop, the only rear tire they had in the correct size was a Bridgestone Excedra, a radial. I never liked the way it handled, always ran 40 psi (as shown on the sidewall) but it did go 14k miles before the wear bars were showing (noticed last week in Big Bend) so I used my new stock BT-45 to replace it. A local friend has near 20k on his BT-45, the reason I got one when they were on sale. (Amazon $112 & free shipping)

I've been hoping for mileage reports on the new Avon, had not seen many until this thread. If the reports continue to be good, I'll try it next.

Jaysgone, here's the answer to your problem, some use it, some don't, read about it and keep an open mind. You can go to Amazon and get some meaningful comments on the product. Works for me.

I like mine. It is smoother and tracks very nicely on irregular pavement and in the rain. Much better than the Dunlop used by Harley that is designed for a two wheel ride.

I'm new to trik'ing and only had my trike (converted two weeks ago) but my builder highly recommended Avon (trike) tire for the front..
I have only a couple of days riding experience under my belt, so my thoughts really don't count much.. but I like it!

I'm sorry if it sounded like I was pounding on you - I wasn't. What I'm primarily referring to is the notoriously weak OEM front end on the GL1800. I am personally convinced that this is not inherent in the tires. I have the Traxxion AK-20 cartridges and stronger Traxxion springs on my trike and through four tires I have had no cupping; two BT45 and two Avon Cobra Trike tires. I run two up and heavy. I really wish Honda would address this.
Wing with Roadsmith kit, Traxxion Ak20 cartridges and Accuride System.

    07 ST 1300 for two-wheeled fun!
