    Default Blasted &^%^$ Screw!

Ok.... While working on my adjustable backrest mount today, I dropped the seat screw into the bike (for the hundredth time) while trying to tighten the seat down.

So I made my mind up that I'm not going to put the screw in anymore.

So my seat doesn't seem to move. And I'm wondering if anyone else has given up on keeping the screw in.

Also, anyone have any experiences that would tell me that this may not be the great idea it appears to be?

Not fun securing it for sure, I have a knurled thumb screw, at least if I drop it , hopefully it's big enough to find. If you leave it out, probably scratch up the mount then rust.

    Ummm.... I hate logic... lol....

But you may have just justified keeping the screw in.

I have used for many years a chrome Acorn head nut with a screw stud locktited in it. When I go to put it back on, I use a socket with a piece of electrical tape wrapped around the socket hanging over about an 1/8". That holds the nut in and after tightening it up with the ratchet and extension, just pull the socket off.

Rumor has it that I may have a screw loose. Not true.

    I have two screws loose.

I have given up on seat screws for both bike and trike. Bike lost threaded nut on fender and newer trike seats screw mounting tab doesn't really line up. Never a problem, whether I have backrest attached through middle or not to each.

with the tour box lid open and the seat pad raised and secured out of the way; I guess I've been lucky never having dropped the screw. having said that, that *^*%#- battery is a PIA too remove and cables are too short making reinstalling also a PIA

Ok, I read this somewhere, not sure where, but you take a plastic milk carton or similar and cut a square piece out of it, put some slits in it for the size of seat screw to fit through and put screw thru seat bracket and attach the plastic piece to the bottom of it, when taking seat off the screw stays in place because of the plastic piece attached. I haven't tried it yet but will the next time I take seat off. Just a thought is all.

    Default Milk jug washer works

I used it on Old Shiney the second time I had the seat off! And when I changed battery I found a spare screw down in there glad it did not wear a hole in the old one. Make sure the hole in the plastic piece is small enough to grip the threads of the bolt. Inexpensive fix the Motor Co. should have done years ago, sometimes I think it is done just to make us cuss. Ride safely Fred

I made a captive screw out of a piece of plastic from a milk jug a few years ago & it has been one of the best simple mods that I have done. Read it on one of the forums I'm on.

Magnetized driver- if you have a magnet rub it vigorously against your screwdriver tip and you're ready to go.

Interesting all.....but I've never had an issue - When I'm putting the seat back on, the screw is already hanging in the bracket. Left hand guides the front in and the right holds the screw until close.....as we all know the seat will sit an inch or two above the hole. Insert tool - push and let the screw be the guide and......screw. Works for me.....maybe just lucky - jc

Thumbscrew....extra high here...ebay is loaded with them..fishing a small phillips head screw back there where you can't see is a bad design..especially if you ever have to get to the battery on the road.

    Default Modified seat screw

I went to Menards & bought a 1/4x20 4" eye bolt and fabricated a modified TRIGLIDE seat screw that works perfectly. Total cost...less than 2 bucks.
