Default How often do you ride before rest stops?

Am I the only one whose legs and knees get sore after riding only 50 miles? Looking for ways to make riding more comfortable, particularly on my knees and legs. Hate to think at age 72 I'm getting too old to ride anymore.

About 3 years ago , I had to cut short my walks in the woods [Hunting] After a mile or two i was sore all over especially my legs...So i finally did something i rarely ever do, Voluntarily go to the Doctor...So naturally they send me for all kinds of tests, only to find nothing wrong. And the Doc paying off his Mercedes....And as I'm leaving as an after thought, The Doc says, Why don't you stop at Shop-rite vitamin aisle and try taking Magnesium'[OXIDE]... Now i can stay in the woods all day, Last winter i walked 8 miles with a biologist tracking a radio collared bear, With out any problems, Just last Thur/Fri i was cutting down and dragging out firewood..

I will ride anywhere between 75 to 100 miles before necessity calls.

As far as dealing with knees and back, I will change my foot position frequently.

I have highway pegs, folding floor boards and the ground effects that I can reposition my feet.

I also added a handle bar riser kit which made a big difference in arm, leg and low back overall comfort.

Also, you are not getting too old to ride...

+1 on taking Magnesium Oxide. I've been taking it for quite a while. It does help a lot!

As far as how many miles between stops, usually 100 miles max especially riding two up as my other half usually lets me know when to stop.

Humm. Read where Magnesium Oxide is good for the muscles. This reminds me, I am due for blood work and I have been noticing my leg muscles feel weak lately. May try taking it after asking my doctor. Thanks!

To stay highly alert, we try to stop every 1-1.5 hrs.
Please keep in mind that anytime I share or give advice about a motorcycle, unless I state otherwise, I am always referring to GL1800's and no other.

Getting older is a lot of mind over matter. If it don't matter. I don't mind it.

I used to be able to put in 300+ mile days if I had to.

Now If I take the bike or trike. 150 miles before I take a stretch.

Besides none of my bikes or the trike get much over 180 miles to the tank before reserve kicks in.

I have diabetic neuropathy. My legs are pretty much dead most of the time as is. From the knees down.

Its just starting in my hands. That bothers me more then the legs.

Point is. You ride till you feel its time to stop. Your body is more important then your age.

I try and stop every hour. Just to get off the bike or trike. Then on the second stop usually stop for bathroom break and fuel. I'm 67 and have found that it's good not to pass up a good piece of porcelain!

At 72 that's pretty much our thoughts, 75 to 100 miles tops, then a coffe/fuel/break,

    Just ENJOY the ride!

I appreciate all of the great comments and suggestions offered here. Looks like a lot of us are in the same boat so to speak. We must listen to your body and don't over extend.

Jay got it right. Your body will tell you when to rest and pushing yourself beyond that point is an invitation to trouble. I'm 87 with a Roadsmith trike and extra gas tank. In good weather and a good road I don't need to flip to the reserve until about 180 miles - and that's about when I'm ready for a break. I wonder if that Magnesium would be effective against shin splints????? It will be worth a try.

I still do 500 mile days on trips ... I go tank fill to tank fill. I do take an Alleve before I ride.

(just a side note ... I'm back on two)

We are about as flexible as can be and stop whenever & wherever we want .....unless the ride calls for a full day on the trike to arrive at our destination within the day then we can pretty much go tank to tank. We take care of the other necessities at those points.

When riding my previous bike most times I would get the horrible knot between the shoulders, wife would see me trying to work it out and I'd get a nice back rub. Thankfully I don't get the knot near as bad or often on the trike........but I can usually still get a few back rubs.

    Default Shoulder knot

The muscils in back of the neck-shoulder blade area, tense up when slouching forward to reach the handlebars. Your arms should be bent in a 90 degree angle to avoid that neck stress.

Look at NASCAR drivers as to how close and how bent there arms are while driving 500 miles. Straight arm driving is fine for very short distances only. Hence since my 2" pullbacks were installed, problem cured.
