Oil Filter Drain M-8

I must be the exception to the rule.....just changed oil and filter and had very little mess. Just laid a rag under the filter while I unscrewed it and tilted it back once it came loose. No oil mess and minimal drip after. I thought the process was relatively easy.

Not a huge fan of the looks of where that relo kit puts the filter but certainly can see it would be easier to change.

i bought the erst trough and it works better and is cheaper than the HD one. i then notched the erst one so it goes in farther, punch two holes and let it drain.

I had the DK Dual Cool system on my '14 TGU, and I LOVED it... really made oil changes a breeze, and really increased the value that I got from it when I traded it on the new '17 M8 TGU. Solved the oil change mess by getting the prepaid maintenance plan for the first 20K miles. After that, I will probably go back to the DK system.

I changed my oil on my 2017 Tri yesterday using the HD filter drain kit made for the M-8. I used a small dish towel under the filter pushed flat against the filter housing used a long skinny screw driver to get it in there loosen the filter just a tad as to not leak. Slid the funnel up in til it clicked in place drilled a hole in the top and bottom of the filter and let it drain , backed off the filter into the funnel let it set for awhile and removed the filter and funnel with no oil mess at all. Thought I would share this info. Doc

That is exactly what I do Doc, I normally put one hole in the filter at the bottom but I think I might try two like you did next time.

I put a rag under the filter then turn the filter just a little.

I put a rubber glove around the filter then remove it

with very little spill 98% of the oil is in the glove. Just

wipe what did leak and then replace with new filter.

The M-8 oil filter is a little tight compared previous years Not much room in that area to get at the filter. Doc

Attachment 45031​Bought this gizmo after my 2nd messy oil change on our 2012 Tglide. Also built a 5" ramp for the right rear wheel to drive up on to assure all the gunk gets expelled at oil change time. Oil changes much easier and cleaner now. Using K&N oil filter makes things so many times easier also. Don't make the mistake I did back in '88 and forget to lube the new oil filter gasket or you next oil change will be a lesson in frustration.

Was at the dealer the other day and we was talking about the oil filter and the mess, he told me to go to a auto parts store and buy pig mat, cut enough off and lay it under the filter and take it off and tip it up as fast as you can, I guess the pig mat absorbs what oil does spill and no mess, will try it the next time I change oil, just did it awhile ago so not due yet. I had a little spillage the way I did it with a cut out of a milk jug, works good on my road king but not as good with the triglide because of the lowers I guess, not enough room to work around in there.
