    Cool

Not having done my 1000 mile yet I was looking at the filter set up on this 2017 Tri M-8 motor, It looks like it will make a mess doing this filter change as the oil will run down on the water pump. I was thinking that with this kit on the filter, drill a hole in the filter top and bottom and let most of the oil drain to this funnel may even have to jack the right side of the Tri a little to get it to drain. I know the filter relocation kit would be the best but under warranty I hesitate to install it. Thanks Doc

Unless it works better that the one for the Twin Cams, it's a waste of money, IMHO.

I wish I could give a name credit to the person who posted the following picture of his solution but I can't remember...

    Name: oil filter drain pan.jpg

Cheap solution and probably works as well as any commercial unit. Before you remove the filter, loosen it slightly and punch two holes in the end - one at the top to let air in and one at the bottom to let the oil drain into the tray (homemade or commercial).

I find if I do this first then remove the oil drain plug and leave everything drain for awhile, it saves a bunch of mess... Usually do my oil changes in the late afternoon after getting back from a ride and then leave everything drain overnight...

I know that this topic has been beat to death on the forums but just my $.2 (almost $.4 Cdn ) lol

Good luck with whatever you use to save a mess...

    Cheers

    Doug

I used to do the 2 hole punch thing too ... still a tad messy, but, better than the alternative. Short of a filter relocation kit (DK Customs makes one) I think this is the best method.

The filter configuration is about the same on the 16's and 17's, and the exact same oil filter. I bought one of those for my 16. The first time I used it most of the oil ran past the end of it. This last time I figured I just didn't have it jammed in there good enough. It still ran down past it. The next time I drop my oil I probably will punch a hole in the bottom end of the filter and see if I can get it to drain into the thing before unscrewing filter.

I did buy Harley's flat oil pan that holds 10 quarts. It works really good and fits nicely under the bike.

I believe this drain funnel is a bit different in it shape as to previous funnels prior to the M-8 it has a lock tab on the filter end and twists into position and has room to clear the water pump connector. Doc

Aluminum foil works well. I have one of those Harley plastic thingies with the tube and it is "Hardley" better than nothing at all. What a mess. However, if you take some aluminum foil and make a double layer trough, it will be cheap and you discard the oil that pools in the trough. You just have to be a bit careful when removing the "trough" filled with a little oil.

Doc, I did use the foil with great success on the 1000 mile service I performed on my M8-engined Tri Glide. The foil conforms to the underside of the filter in that fairly tight space. There are some impediments to removing the foil trough filled with oil and you just carefully have to remove the foil keeping it slightly tipped outward to keep the oil from going back toward the filter opening. If you do that, there is almost no oil that drips anywhere.

The HD oil catcher funnel for the 2017 or M8 engine it works just fine if you install it right.

I loosen he oil filter first leaving it jut barley tight enough not to leak. Then I lay a thin microfiber towel in place covering everything under the oil filter.

I do this by pushing the towel up under the oil filter evenly and gently with a thin small long dowel. Then I carefully work the HD oil catcher in place making sure it goes all the way back under the oil filter and is in place like the instructions say, towel now under the HD funnel.

Then I use my ratchet extension and filter wrench ore my hand to spin the filter into the funnel letting the oil drain through the hose into a container. I wait a while make sure all is drained good.

I then remove the filter out of the HD funnel and remove the funnel. A little bit of oil will get on the towel during the HD funnel removal but not much. I then spin on a new oil filter with the O ring lubed and all is good.

I have read about guys having problems with this HD oil catcher funnel but that has not been the case for me at all.

Through Jesus Christ, I a sinner am saved. Not by my doing but through his doing by his sacrifice and Blood Shed on the Cross. His gift to all mankind that will only believe and accept him by Faith. Through his Death and Resurrection I am Saved by Grace and someday I will be with our Lord in Heaven forever.

Thanks Bill G. I bought it yesterday and thought it may work well . I test fitted it and seems to click in well but was not sure it would catch all the oil from the filter as I believe it snaps to the filter so when removing the filter off the housing I believe there would be a gap there and leak oil in front of the funnel. Thanks Doc

I have tried more methods for changing filters than I can remember. The one that I eventually defaulted to was the tin foil.

There are hundreds of threads like this across the internet...everyone having varying degrees of success with different methods.

    The Factory design is ridiculous.

Relocating the oil filter not only makes it a complete non-issue to change, but will help the engine run cooler also.

I solved my problem by installing the dual cool and filter relocation from DK Custom. No more mess and the dealer thinks it is a smart mod. Jim

Being that my Tri is so new and the M-8 is so new I wonder about warranty problems with the kit on it. I do plan on installing one later down the line. Thanks Doc
