    Default Mystery Pull Tab?

Okay, so today I was installing soft ties on the frame under the seat. I leave them hidden behind the side covers for when I need to trailer it.

Here is a pic of the right side, the left is the same but backwards ...

When I removed the seat to give me better access, I notice what I can only describe as a loop to pull something. It is located under the passenger back rest almost dead center against the trunk or top case and is hidden when the seat is on. The wire goes through a cable mount and down to who knows where. See the pics.

In the pic from the right side you can see the wire mount it goes through. My first instinct was to give it a yank. But, my Navy training and common sense came rushing forward and prevented that. (I was always told, "If you don't know what it is, don't touch it." Couple that with the fact it's RED (Dangerous Things are Red) and I decided to leave well enough alone.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the trike conversion. This is my 5th Gold Wing, but, first one that has been triked. None of the other ones had this little Gem.

I did have a few thoughts:

    Quick release for the conversion.

Passenger ejector seat (although I ruled that out cause you need to remove the seat to get to it, I think, didn't look to see if I can get to it with the seat on. Of course, it wold be impossible to get to with a passenger in the seat.)

Maybe some kind of release or tank shift for an aux fuel tank. I don't think I have an aux tank, but it could be hidden.

    Release for a bootlegger's hold.

Release for a drug smuggler's hold.

Release for a gun runner's hold.

Exhaust dumps, like we used to do on the hot rods.

Fuel dump, you know, incase you "need to run out of gas" on a date.

As you can see, my imagination has run a bit wild with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The temptation to yank it is getting stronger by the minute.

    Thanks.

I rigged up a wire like that on my ex-Spyder.. It ran under the front fender, And to the release mechanism to open the front trunk...The trunk opened with the ignition key, but sometimes it wouldn't pop open hence the wire...To this day i wondered if the new owner ever figured out what the wire was for.....

I guess it could be to open the trunk or top case ... at some point, you know I will have to yank it.

It's used to open the trunk if the regular latch doesn't work. My Champion has the same thing under the seat.

We found similar item on our Goldwing trikes - not to say that this is what your wire is - but we were told it was an emergency pull-string to open the top trunk....however, we didn't actually try it.

Maybe Goldrush will chime in here - he's pretty handy with all that stuff,,, or if he's not reading the forum,,, send him a PM.

Yes ... just like Honda has a "back-up mechanical opener" for each side compartment, trike's have them for their trunks. However, most kits route them towards the battery making the pull cord accessible after removing the left side panel.

I can't speak for any but the Adventure conversion but yes it did have the release cable behind the left side cover. The one covering battery access. I suspect the other Motor Trike conversions have it in the same location.

Try removing your left side cover and look around the top of the battery. Often the pull cord is nylon tied to the frame pipe the runs along the top of the battery. If it's not found there, then remove the seat and look under it. I can't recall ever not seeing one on a trike.

We have that same emergency trunk release on our '04 Champion. I thought it came standard on the Goldwing as a 2 wheeler from the factory, as it only is attached to the stock trunk, not the lower trunk on the kit. It would be handy to have one connected to the lower trunk too, just in case.

We have a Diamond saddle. There is a gap between the seat and the Diamond backrest that is filled with a sepeate matching panel. It is easy to remove without opening the trunk or taking the seat off, so that is where the cable lives.

That cable is to open the lower trunk. I have the same thing on my CSC 1500 trike.

Okay ... so I couldn't resist ... I yanked it ... the lower trunk opened ... very anticlimactic ... but I did call my insurance company to see if explosions were covered.
