    Default Ovaling of cylinders due to heat.

    Just curious about this potential problem. What are the symptoms of engine cylinders becoming oval from heat. is it something that would be blatantly obvious or would you not know unless you did a leak down test. Thanks for any information that can be shared. Just for info. I have a 2015 freewheeler with a TC HO 103.

    I dont quite understand this

    However HD cylinders are oval by design

    Now, this is 1 of the reasons torque plates are so important when working on the top end over hauls

    The newer engines do run hotter, A leak down test should verify your rings and valves are working correctly

    If not do a compression test ( hold the throttle wide open during the test)

    If the compression is LOW, pump some oil in the cylinders and re do the test

    If the numbers go up, tear it down and do a top end job

    Harley cylinder to piston fit is a strange set up

    If any one tells u u have oval cylinders and they need to bore them and hone them round

    Run Away as fast as u can

    Unless they have checked your cylinders with torque plates { Harley cylinders do grow out of round because of the design, a normal running HD engines barrels move that much other wise they would lock up tighter than diks hat band JMO}

    They straighten the cylinders { as if they were on the bike running for proper ring to piston to cylinder specs}

    This changes IF you use forged pistons, tho u would not need or want them unless u r racing and like even more noise and poor oil control JMO

    Look at Harley Torque plates for more info JMO and good luck

    Rick-

    If the cylinders get ovaled out, or valves stop seating well, because of excessive heat, it is unlikely you will notice a power drop, due to it taking place over a period of time....but there is definitely a drop in power.

    The best way to know is to do a compression leak down test. This will show right away if there is a problem with rings or valves sealing.

    Thank you for the responses guys. I really appreciate it a lot. On a side note to kevin from DK customs I hope you are doing well brother. Hey thanks for the great shocks you sell. I finally bit the bullet and bought some bi-tubos for the rear end and man what a difference. I am saving up for the front end now. I still need to do the bars , seat, front end and at some point I may do a cam for more passing power. It never ends does it. LOL. Thanks also to Jack for his responses to my original question. thanks again. Rick aka missedem.

    Yeah, we're doing well...been super busy with a bunch of projects the last few months...it's been a hectic year so far, but no complaints.

    Sorry we did not get up to Montana this year...but we are planning on it next year, looking forward to seeing you and riding some together.
