Will not start in gear

I was stranded at a store on yesterday because the trike did not start as usual. I park in first gear with the parking brake applied. When I got ready to go, I squeezed the clutch lever and put my right foot on the rear brake pedal as usual; but the bike would not start. I pulled the 50 amp fuse and clean it due to minor corrosion, but that was not the problem.

After putting the bike in neutral, it started. This was the first time I had this problem. Is there anything (i.e. switch) that I can check without going to the dealer?

The owner's manual states that the bike should crank when the clutch is released and the brake is applied. In the past, I did not have to find neutral to start the engine.

Thank you,

Uncledoc

Dan.. Do a Search theres a few treads on this same subject.......

While in gear with out the clutch pulled, it should not crank. After replacing my hand grips i found that more pressure was needed to engauge the switch. Adjusting the clutch cable solved the problem. The new grips are larger than the OEM ones . 📞

1dn5up,

I will check that adjustment. . . thanks!

If u have a hydraulic clutch there is no adjustment to help, however the right side switches are ALL in one now, if that clutch switch has gone south u may need a new switch half?

Break light switches?

Had the same problem with mine, the foot brake switch was broken.

Yup, kill the cruise and cause the starter to malfunction too

The new can bus sytems are way different than any thing we have seen before

The 18 models have finally moved the passing lamp switch to the ls handlebar switch pak where it belongs IMO long over due

HD is trying, nut making it harder to work on unless you do a diagnostic first and see if a part number shows up in the odometer window

The newer bikes check each system seperately now I like this

What I forgot ... cold or hot engine?

Don't laugh, but my breaklightswitch made the problems only if hot, after about 40 miles of riding :xzqxz:

No one is laughing

The HD engines have been known in the past to have wierd unexplained heat related issues

If I had a dime 4 every EVO bike that quit running or ran funny when hot GEEEZ

The ignition pick up inside the timer plate yup on the RS of the bike Right by the rear brake light switch on some models would heat up and open up( BANG NO ignition)

So we can learn that electricity is a VERY funny animal and does what it wants when it wants

I've had the same problem with my '14 TG a couple of times. Each time it was fixed by replacement of the brake switch.

My 2017 Tri Glide will only start in if it's not in gear

Welcome to Trike-Talk- Mike :wave4:......Are you pressing hard on the brake pedal, Clutch pulled all the to the grip......Then hit the start button not before...

Also do you have the stock grips, Some after market grips are too thick and wont engage the clutch start switch......

Have you tried using the hand brake lever ? I have not tried with the foot brake but my 16 always starts in gear with clutch & brake levers pulled.

Right, should but don't.

My Son went to start my 17 Tri-Glide, To take for a ride and he said it won't start in gear, So i told him take your finger off the start button, Step ''Hard'' on the brake pedal clutch in all the way, ''Now'' press the start button.....Started right up...And thats the way i start it every time...

And if that doesn't work for you then the brake switch is bad...
