How much slop is allowable?

The transmission shaft going out of the left side of the tranny that the shift lever is attached to, how much sloppy movement is allowable? Should it move in and out and how does one tell if the pinch bolt holding the lever is tight? Can you get an Allen wrench down between the inner primary case and the outside of the tranny to tighten it?

On my 11 T/G i did just that, I took out the Allen dropped the lever down cleaned out the pinch bolt , Filed the opening a little so using a new Allen bolt the lever would get a better bite on the shaft., Almost no movement.. Before that the lever was almost spinning on the Trans shaft..

Just to add' If it gets too loose you won't be able to change/shift gears..

From underneth with an Allen socket...Once the bolt loosens just enough you then can slide the lever off, it then will drop down to the ground and it will be easy to remove the bolt... The bolt and the lever are made of softer metal [AKA Sacrificial metal] then the trans shaft is....

The lever has been a weak point for years

Yes you can get the arm and bolt off with out removing the primary

This is a common problem

Use a socket with a 1/4" allen, remove the allen bolt. Get a grade "8" 5/16" 24 thread 1" long, from most auto supply stores. Use a flat washer under the head of the bolt, and apply grease to both sides of the washer. Install the bolt using a 3/8" ratchet and socket, and really crank down on it. The greased washer lets you tighten the bolt and not let the head of the bolt dig into the soft aluminum shiftier lever.

You need to remove the horizontal connecting rod to get to the tranny arm pinch bolt. I replaced the stock horizontal rod with a H-D "buckshot" rod with heim joint ends. That really tightened it all up (less slop).

The shifter shaft thru the primary used to have a grease erk

The bean counters freaked out and saved a nickle on each bike

Not mine, I drilled and tapped it and the rear brake pedal

Now I grease them each oil change

U can drill them on the bike, go slow use grease on the bit do not go to deep and blow out the hole with compressedair and spray brake cleaner before u grease them

Pump extra grease in the first time to b sure u get NO more fillings out
