Those are impressive, Zook! I can see the attraction if you've got the right lot!
There is a lot of interest in these so called "bardominiums" or home/garages built from a metal building with a living quarters inside, due to the lower cost, practicality and ability to store and work on your toys. Im liking the idea a lot. There are many, many styles and designs out there from very basic to exotic. Has anyone done one? Seen one? What do yall think?

It gives you a place to live, work, play all in the same spot especially if you built it on a few acres. Zoning would be a factor so you'd have to be out in the county. There are communities of these popping up all over the country. Some are centered around private planes, some around cars and motorcycles, etc. Most are still single family, built on an acre or two.

no but i did add a 40x50 edition to the house last year. about 38k. shell with 4' crawl space.
Heres one, thats more of a true "condominium" styled project called The Auto Motorplex, outside of Minneapolis. They sell you a shell space and you build it out however you want, plain or fancy. Some wealthy folks buy a large space and work on or store their classic and collector cars there, but most just buy a single space. Prices run from $50K-$500K. Its a 40 acre community that has a clubhouse, large room to cook, entertain, socialize, view movies, etc and they host Cars-N-Coffee or Bike-N-Coffee events twice a month, and sometimes really large events a couple of times a year that draws the public, press, magazines, etc. Not what Im looking for but it looks like a very fun place!

Hey Zook...
These things are popular in Texas.. We know different people who own one and everyone is envious. Living quarters is upstairs. One guy put in an elevator and the other put in one of those chair-ride things to get you upstairs. One of them lives in a private airport community and keeps his airplanes in the hangar area below, and the other is a home builder who keeps his motorhome, motorcycle, etc in the shop area. We started to do exactly this in the Hill Country around Fredericksburg just to use as a weekend vacation home but ran in to some pretty stringent restrictions in that county - what you could and couldn't build and its designated use - no matter how nice-looking it was. We also have ranch friends who joke about putting their guests "in the barn"...HA! - you should see the guest quarters "in the barn"! WOW, just super-nice. The white, rough Austin chalk rock that some people put on the exterior is very appealing. They are nice. Paws
Yeah they are super popular in Texas...probably more there than anywhere. Thats where I first read about them on a fishing forum 2coolfishing.com.

Randy, we looked into building one that looked like a barn on some lake property. The bottom was going to be open with a door on each end to drive the RV in and out.. and the top was going to be the living quarters. The end facing the lake would have been glass so we could have gotten the full view of the lake.. The top would have also had the exposed beams..

Its actually a pretty neat concept Steve. I like the fact that theres almost no worry of termites at least on the steel structures, theres very little maintenance like rot, re-roofing, or painting, etc. I also like the idea of living where you work and working where you live. Lots of pluses in my book. Now if I can just win the lottery!
