Default ride destinations, or go where the front wheel leads.

lets say ya get up on a saturday morning and decide, theres no destination. just go where the front wheel leads. how far does everybody ride on days like this ?..this is usually an every saturday ritual with me. and most times i will put around 300 to 500 miles on in one day. i have a ride that i call a popcorn run. i'll get up on saturday morning and decide i wanna eat lunch at the ocean. from my house to ocean city Md. is 250 miles. about a 4 and 1/2 hour trip. i'll get there have lunch, load the trailer with caramel popcorn then head right back home. some days i'll ride to little grand canyon Pa which is 168 miles one way. about 3 and 1/2 hour ride..have lunch then ride back home. i used to camp alot in wellsboro Pa. till my tenittus got really bad. now i have to sleep sitting up. so unless i can put the tent up against a tree so my pillows don't move on me..camping is out. so lets hear about some of your rides with no desinations, or even the ones that you'll ride somewhere just for lunch.

Unfortunately we're not quite that spontaneous, but a couple of weekends ago we decided on a Friday to go to the hill country (Texas) the next day and came home Sunday, about 700 miles. We rode FM 337 and FM 335, beautiful, twisty roads. I confess I love sitting back listening and singing along with my iPod as I drive down the road - except in the twisties. Believe it or not, that California Side Car can really hug those curves - it's a blast! We keep saying we're just going to take off one Saturday morning and ride until dark - stay overnight, turn around and come home. We will one day!

    Thumbs up

on any sunny day, head north, maybe south, most decisions are there any roads i haven't touched yet, most rides start along the lake superior shoreline then divert in some direction that looks different, or go 300 miles for lunch or 75 miles for breakfast, nice when your retired huh

3W, before the Hurricane we used to get up and ride down to Biloxi Ms. and have lunch. Then ride the beach and work our way back home. About 4 hrs one way. Always made a great ride plus the seafood was good toooo. Now we usually ride over to my sisters in Mississippi and go fishing and then have a cook out.
    Have a great weekend.

Biloxi and the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast is on the way to becoming better than ever. I have been there several times since the storm and each time I am amazed and comforted by the can do spirit that I see in place.

    Hi Ben,

I tried that style of touring one time back '01. It didn't work, we missed too much along the way. Now, when we light out for a tour, I'm prepared for the areas we will cover, and we miss very little of the must-see stuff.

Depending on our destination, we cover anywhere from 400 to 600 miles in an day. We never roll more than 120 miles with out a "short" stop (twenty minutes max).

As for single day rides, it's not uncommon to ride early, and roll up to 175 miles before lunch, and up to 250 miles after lunch.

We like to ride as well.....!!!

We do no destination rides often. Pick a direction and go. See a lot we didn't even know existed. The last ride we took we would be riding along, and she would ask "Where does that go?" and we would find out. Saw a beautiful waterfall even though everything is brown this time of year, a round barn, ran into an antique tractor show and found a restaraunt with great burgers and the best coleslaw I've ever tasted. (Sorry Mom) We rode for 7 1/2 hours
not including stops before we decided to head home. Hit "route home" on the GPS and found we ended up only 75 miles from our house. Love the GPS for those no destination rides - don't have to know where you are, the box knows how to get you home.

During the summer we will just head out taking routs we have not taken before.
Riding and stopping as we go.
We don't worry about getting lost. When its time to start heading home we let the GPS take us.
I purposely made my tike low tech but the GPS is 1 high tech item I had to have

Back in the day when i used to go from 1 location to another to fix stupid computers I had no problem fixing them but would get lost trying to find the location

    I love GPS
    Thank you

Well Lonerider I'd like to know how you sleep sittin up when you go to a motel. I haven't traveled overnight since my cancer surgery over ten years ago. And I sure would like to do a few overnighters.

My spontaneous rides usually go until I get to a place that looks like fun to eat at.

Having said that ... once I get out of town, it's 100 miles till the next town to the north, 85 miles to the next town to the east, 65 miles to the next town to the south and 110 to the next town to the west. And those towns are just that ... towns.

Around here we have lots of wide open spaces .. LOL.
