1996 Yamaha Royal Star, Motor Trike kit

Hello all,

I am a MAJOR newbie to the trike world. Wife and I have been considering a trike or converting one of our existing bikes. A 1996 Royal Star, Motor Trike kit became available with 7k miles so we bought it. So far..... so good. LOTS of questions that my local Yamaha (non-trike) dealer cannot seem to answer. Is this an OK location on this forum to ask some questions? Mostly just trying to make sure this trike is safe and working as it should but being new to trikes I have NO idea what each and every nuance is from rattles and vibrations to steering and rumbles. Mostly am concerned about a vibration that the dealer says is a bunch of gears and u-joints just doing what they do. The sounds are unfamiliar to me.

There is somewhat of a shutter feeling / sound as I let off the throttle while moving. When parked there is no issue. The dealer told me it was the gears (CV and the like) shaft drive that were causing the issue and that it was normal. They told me the rear drive is pushing forward at a greater rate of speed and that this does occur. They looked over all the joints and told me they lubricated them. I can live with the shudder as long as I know it is not doing damage or going to leave my wife and I stranded.

Took my "new to me" 96 Royal Star - Motor Trike to a Motor Trike dealer. They told me I NEED a EZ-Steer kit. Cannot find one yet for that old bike and told me if they did I would be looking at just under $2000 installed. I really do not want to put that kind of money into that old of a bike. Please share your opinions so I have some idea what I might do. Right no I am thinking about selling this and just to get out from having to spend that kind of money.

If you are ok with the steering then all is well.

Yes, trikes with shaft drive have play in the drive train. It will take some practice to develop skill to manage that slop. As for the E-Z Steer, it does transfer a lot of weight to the rear wheels, making it easier to steer. Never drove our trike without E-Z Steer, so not sure how it feels without it. Be sure to inflate your front tire to 40 psi and if possible, inflate your front shocks. This will eliminate most of the head shake on bumps and will make the trike easier to steer. Good luck!
