    Default New to Trikes Q's

Hi all, Just got my 06 Roadstar Triked with a Champion kit. I got the easy steer, and have steering questions. at slow speed the front wheel wabbles, some times more than others. and ruff road or potholes or uneaven pavement causes the front end to move quickly, if I wasn't hanging on tite, it could take the bars out of my hands. the dealor sais its ok, and thay do build alot of trikes, but mine was there first Yamaha. What do u think ??? Don

Hello Deacon! I have the 09 Yamaha RSV with the hannigan kit. It's normal for that to occur. Mine does the same thing. I thought it was a problem in the beginning and I was told the same thing. I have spoke to other trikers and most say the same thing. You will get use to it after awhile and it won't be an issue. If you don't hold on tight it will get away from you. I know from experience.

Pay close attention to uneven payment because the trike will do it's own thing. You will find this out very quickly. Most importantly, stay in the center of your lane. This will give you room to maneuver to either side of the road. Be safe and enjoy your new trike. Post some pictures when you get a chance.

You might want to add a steering Damper. Take a look at front end on a HD Tri-Glide for example of what I mean. Looks a little like shock you would see on a screen door to keep it from slamming shut.

If you haven't yet, check out the thread "Experienced Trike Riders". There is a lot of good info there, and I think most of your questons are addressed somewhere in there.

    http://www.triketalk.com/forum/gener...post-here-242/

When we first started triking that wobble at low speed and the bars jumping surprised me, too. When hitting a bump with just one of the rear wheels that side of the trike will be pushed up, or drop down if hitting a pothole. The energy from that movment is transferred to the frame up to the front end. Seeing that there is a hinge at the steering head the whole thing piviots around that, shaking the bars. The movement is a bit more pronounced with straight axle, but still there with IRS. The slow speed wobble can be a lot of things - front tire size or tread pattern, steering geometry, suspension alignment, rear tire preassure different in each side, passenger/gear loading and a host of other stuff. As mentioned a steering damper may help with both issues, but it's natural and you'll get used to it as you add miles.
Probably more detail than you wanted, but there it is.

After adding balance beards to front wheel, with 40 lbs air pressure. It slows it way down. Wobble.

I am not a big fan of steering dampener on this application. What is the stem nut torqued to? I think the factory recommends 30 or 35 Ftlbs.. try going just a tad tighter to firm up the roller bearings. Even if a trike is set up well there seems to always be a little shimmy at very low speeds < 8 mph but nothing crazy.

I don't think I've experienced the low speed shake or if I have overlooked it. I had mine done 4 years ago.

Also how old is the front tire, because a 2 wheeler wears the tire differently than a 3 wheeler it can cause wobbles if a tire with miles on it isn;t changed when converted to 3 wheels.
