Default Any female trikers ride solo?

    Hi All,

Just wondering if there are any other women trikers out there that do not have a "co-pilot", I am on my own after many years of marraige and I have quite a few good riding friends, all are married and have husbands that ride with them, a great group of friends but no trikers in the group and trying to find a time to ride that is compatible for people with families etc is not always easy, so now that I have my new Tri Glide, I do not want to just sit home and hope someone will call so will have to get out there solo..............any other women out there that already ride solo, if so, any tips, etc would be appreciated, a little scary to venture out alone but it is worse to see my Tri Glide sit in the garage............time for me to ride!

I do ride with my husband, but not always, and sometimes I ride with a friend or two who are married also but don't always ride with their DHs, and who don't have kids or whose kids are grown up and out of the house. All of which is to say that there ARE folks out there to ride with that don't have the family schedules to contend with. I have also gone on some solo rides and they can be fun, but not in the same way that a ride with friends often is.

What you might want to do is see if you can post a card or something at a local bike shop saying that you're looking for riding buddies. Just a thought. Get that tri-glide out on the road!

Yep, if I want to ride it's solo. Hubby doesn't ride, and my best friend (a riding instructor herself) is too busy, so if I want to ride I go alone. I usually have a destination in mind, and I ALWAYS make sure my cell phone is fully charged and with me. Once I have the mount for my GPS, I'll probably be a bit more adventurous in my rides, but for now I stick to roads I know and that are at least somewhat well travelled "just in case".

One other thing I'd recommend is to always make sure that someone knows when/where you're planning to ride, especially if you choose to ride back roads - if something happens, you want someone to be aware of where you might be.

    Hi, TrikerMary,

I ride solo all the time. I am married, but hubby doesn't like to ride like I do. Last year I tallied over 10,000 miles, leaving from MO and going to PA. Then on to Michigan where we had our National Women On Wheels(R) rally. Then went to Canada and went thru 3 providences after which I rode south thru ND, MT, SD, WY, NE, CO across NE to Iowa and home. Was a great trip and I rode it alone. No troubles at all. The only "problem" I had was folks stopping to see if I was having problems when I took pictures!! You would be surprised how many nice folks are out there! If you are ever in MO, give me a shout.

There appear to be more and more single females riding both trikes and bikes. There was one solo lady at the Texas Trike Ride in the Hill Country in April and at least two other who pilot their own trikes, with or without hubby aboard. As far as women who ride, a couple years ago Ardys Kellerman, a 75 years young great-grandmother from TX rode 104,000 miles in a year on a BMW.

WOW, I am really encouraged now.......... I do belong to WOmen in the Wind and in Feb attended the rally in Florida, but flew there because no one else wanted to ride since it was Feb and cold here in Maryland! But thank you for telling about your trips, I really have to do it if I want to ride.........thanks Patches!

Have you checked out the Women's Hog group? I ride my own, but travel with Hubby. I know it can be lonely riding by yourself, but just think....you can stop when you want to and don't have to keep up with anyone. I think I would like that part.

I ride solo....my husband has his own ride. We ride with lots of people....some are females with their own rides.

If someone wants to ride they email a beginning location and those who want to ride show up.

Mary, I ride solo also. Was leary of heading out on my own, but went solo to the Motor Maids convention in Post Falls in '07 and really enjoyed myself. Stop when I wanted, chat without having someone say, "hurry up", etc.

Check out the Motor Maids (oldest women's club) and Women On Wheels(r) on the internet....maybe there's members in your area. I belong to both. I also am w/LOH, but haven't ridden with them.

One tip, put an emergency list somewhere on your trike with emergency names to contact in case of emergency. Do not put them in your wallet. I have mine taped to the inside of my tour pac lid.

    Mary,

I have rarely been a passenger, even when I was married. I know my capabilities, and limitations, and prefer to drive my own. I've traveled a good bit of the US, mostly solo, and have logged just short of 200k miles....my job keep getting in the way...LOL.

As others have said, make sure someone at home knows what basic route you're planning to take and where you're planned stops are. In addition, I check in with home every evening about the same time. This develops a pattern, and if I haven't called home that evening, someone knows about where to start looking for me.

If you're looking for ride partners, just start going to local rallys, and runs as a solo. It's amazing how much interest there is in the trikes...folks just start to come up and talk. Women on Wheels, and Meter Maids are both good organizations. You can also check out Trike Riders International (TRIKE RIDERS INTERNATIONAL)

Best of luck in your travels, and you get out to the Midwest...I'll ride with ya!

    Gypsy,

I'll bet Meter Maids was a typo.....it's Motor Maids. The meter maids were back in the old days that worked for the police department and putted around town on servi-cars looking for parking violations.
