    Default Can anyone identify

This Trike was built in 1978-1979 and titled in 1980 I believe. I was wondering if anyone knows the make and model. I know it is considered a VW Trike, but want to know the body style or manufacturer so I can locate parts and upgrades for it. Any and all info would be super!

    Thanks
    John

I can get you close if you can show a side view of the body and the face plate of the nose piece where the gages are.

I found this one. Not much more help. Still digging. I bought it for four thousand from my cousin. My Uncle Bob had it built back in the late Seventies. It came with a custom fitted cover, travel trailer, hauling trailer, helmets, new front forks and springs, and a few other extras. Going to pick it up in a couple weeks.

    This photo is from 2001.

It might be a "Styers" , not sure of the spelling, they were a big builder in the 70's or possably a roadhawk

Does the face plate of the nose cone come to a point or is it big enough to up a couple gages or big enough to put a radio and gages. Also the rear seat pan will tell us a lot. It might be a Corsair or a Stiers which are a lot a like. Just need to see a few better pictures.

Well my cousin told me tonight it was built by The Trike Shop in Anoka Minnesota the year before it moved to White Bear Lake. So did they have their own build?

It is a Road Hawk by the Trike Shop which is now known as Roadsmith. They built the whole thing at their factory and used a VW drive train. Its a well built trike and a lot of em still on the road.

If that is the case then it is a copy of a Corsair. They are still in business today and you can order a brand new one.
    Fiberglass Trike Bodies & Accessories

From what I have been told, the Trike Shop used Corsair's body to make a mold for their bodies and got sued over it. That is why they no longer make the Road Hawk. In the early years, the Trike Shop would buy the Corsair bodies and build the trike from there. So it still could be a Corsair body on a Trike Shop trike.

Looks like I picked the wrong post by Jcrenken to respond to.He had another post at about the same time this on was on, and I answered thusly:
Looks like an early Trike Shop V-Cycle Runabout. Some of the early ones had fenders detached from the body, and the springs low near the rockers were used. The top trunk especially looks like the one we had on Gloria's first trike which we got from the Trike Shop. BTW, their conversions now are under the "Roadsmith" name. You might give them a call or email with the VIN, if it is a Trike Shop V-Cycle they may have a record of it. Amy more pictures? Nice looking ride.

Contact for the Trike Shop: http://www.trikeshop.com/contac
    t/
In the early '90's when we first went to the Davis Rally in Iowa trikes were rare, and conversions were even more rare. All the trikes seemed to be along "Triker's Row", there were probably a few dozen trikes at the most out of a couple thousand bikes at the rally. Most of the trikes were homebuilt or VW powered factory jobs. Trike Shop V-Cycle Runabout, Stires, Wilmac, Arizona trikes seemed to be made from very similar molds. Still, I do believe that is most likely an early V-Cycle Runabout, as I have never seen any but the Trike Shop with that front lower bodywork covering the pedals. (Could be mistaken, not unusual. )

After the Trike Shop went with a 1 piece rear body with integrated fenders, they changed it in the mid-90's - the styling was updated to be more rounded and swoopy, and the length grew about a foot in the middle along with some other styling and mechanical changes. The name was changed to the Roadhawk. In the mid-late 2000's the Trike Shop phased out VW trikes and went with the Roadsmith conversions.
Wheover made it, Jcrenken, you have a piece of trike history there.

As soon as I pick it up, I will check with the Trike Shop with the VIN number. I have searched for over ten years and have come up with squat on this particular style Trike. I have a sneaking feeling that I have landed a very rare gem. If it was made pre law suit by the Trike Shop, then maybe it's worth allot more than I originally thought. To me though it is priceless because of its history in my family. My dear Uncle Bob purchased it brand new in 1980 and had it right up until he passed three years ago. I feel fortunate to have it.

You probably already thought of this, but so far no one has mentioned to check on the title andor registration. States are different, but in Missouri the maker of a vehicle along with the type and model is on the title. Of course if you haven't picked it up yet you may not have the documents in hand. Will be interesting to hear what you find out about this trike.

That does look to be a Corsair body or a clone of a Corsair. Does the face plate look like mine??

Here are a couple more pictures now that I have it in my garage. Broke off one of the inner rocker bolts trying to tighten it up the other night, then discovered that Unc used red locktite with a nylon lock nut. Re-build kit on the way. Looks like a Springer front end. Any ideas?

Here is the skinny on the engine:
    VW 1972 1600cc
    Bored Balanced Blueprinted to 2180cc
    92mm Jugs
    82mm stroke
    Seat 410286 lift cam
    82 stroke forged crank

Uncs notes say the distributor is mounted 180 degrees off, don't really know why though. Firing order is 1342 according to his notes also.

    LET THE DISCUSSION BEGIN!!!!!!!!!
