Default A/C for Mini Mate Camper

I have a Mini Mate Camper that I want to get an A/C unit for and was wondering what size & brand others are using in their campers? I'm also thinking of getting a small gas generator to use when there is no elec hookup, what is everyone using that will run the A/C unit, size & brand?
    Thanks for any info, Tom

Id like to hear responses too. I want to get a camping generator and AC for my tent that I carry in my pull behind trailer.

Scotty, below is a reply I got from Bill Reber, on another thread, he has A/C in his Aspen camper.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The AC is a $99.00 5,000 BTU 115 volts AC . Unit is a cheap window unit from Lowles but it is what Aspen recomends. Yes a small generator can be used for power , however we just pluged into the camps power. The unit sits on a small milk crate and is tied into the camper by a draw cord. If you go to the Aspen site you will see how this unit is set up. Other builders differ slightly but for the most part they are all about the same with the exception of Lee Ur Lite. For heat we use a small box heater again 5,000 BTU , just be very carefull using any heater, the one we use has a auto shut of if tipped.
    Bill

Hopefully someone that has a generator can give us info about that.

Default Does ANYONE use an A/C unit or gas generators in the Camper

I'm surprised that out of 90+ views there is no one using an A/C unit and/or gas generator in their camper. That seems like a lot of hot sweaty people using hot campers. I know that I will not be camping in my new camper without A/C and at sites without elec. hook-up I will need a small gas generator.

SO, if someone knows more info or recommendations for A/C units & small gas generators, our trailers would love to hear about it.

I have a Honda 1000 watt gas generator. It's the smallest and most silent unit I could find. Just make sure it will run your A/C.

    hi folks
i can tell you that the gen you get will need to supply 3-5 times the amps that your a/c draws so that it can start compressor in your a/c...there are some small gen sets that have electric start and inverter technology so they boost there output by drawing power from the start battery to handle current inrush of compressor... best of luck mike

I had a Bunk House camper and I cut a window in the canvas and set a 5000 BTU window air conditioner on a milk crate and put just the front portion in the camper. When I camped I made sure I had a space with electric furnished. It kept the camper nice and cool for sleeping. I let it run during the day at the camp site to keep it cooler for the evening.

I plan to make a removable frame & support for the a/c that attaches to the trailer tongue and I will create an opening in the screen for the a/c to fit thru. The a/c unit doesn't weigh very much and a light weight support should be simple to weld up out of a few pieces of aluminum.

I'm not sure when I will make the set-up for the a/c, but I'll take some photo's and learn how to load them on TT. I seem to remember seeing a website that had some info about putting a/c in a Mini, if I can find it again I will post a link & send you a PM.
I'm getting ready to move back to my hometown in IN. so I might make it a winter project.

I looked at MAYBE putting an a/c in my MMC and decided cost/benefit/weight/possible use analysis convinced me it was not a good idea. I have been very happy (and GF too) to use a battery/ac/dc"O2" fan. I suspend it from the center crossbar.

With one screen opened a couple of inches on each side of the MMC it circulates enough air to sleep comfortably.

My Timeout camper came with an air conditioner access with a velcro flap and a stand. I use a 5,000 btu that I bought at Sears. I shopped around to find the lightest ac unit I could find to cut down on the traveling weight in the camper. I used to have one that had a plastic cover and a handle but when it died I couldn't find another like it. I don't have/use a generator as I have never camped where there was not electricity.

well about 15 years ago I took a cheap window a/c (5,500btu) from walmart and built it into a scamp 11 ft. camper.. I put a large vent grill like you would see on outside of camper frig.24 high x 24 wide, louvered grill, bottom half of grill is inlet air to condenser and top half of grill you duct to back of a/c inclosing the coil you see on rear of window a/c looked factory worked great the trick is ducting the air from the coil outlet- air must be in separate from inlet air it goes into side louvers on a/c cabinet. .. I bent up some thin alum. sheeting and screwed it together and caulked inside attached it to back of a/c around coil caulk and tape don't run screws into back and poke I hole in coil I built a cabinet over a/c. inside wide enough for inlet air from bottom half of grill to go by sides and the ducting off back of a/c where you see the coil is where the ducting attached to a/c and top half of louvered grill.. I don't know if the camper you are talking about has enough room for this but its food for thought..

Have a Timeout that came with the a/c access and the frame. All I had to do was pick out an a/c unit. I shopped around looking for the lightest one I could find. Bought on from Sears. 5000 btu and it cools the camper just fine, even on hot days.
