Default Venture Power?

Are any of you with the second generation hannigan kit disappointed with power?

I pull a Bushtec Roadstar and am worried about power on the open road.

I have an RSV with motortrike. We pull a timeout tent trailer, total load about 500 lbs. The only time I know its back there is on hills.

I ride a 08 RSV with a Hannigan kit and I do feel a little lose of power but your adding about 350lbs on to the bike. Mine still has plenty of power to ride two up on the eway, I have a trailer but have not used it on a long trip yet.

Remember that your 5th gear is an overdrive. It will not hurt run in 4th gear, even over a long distance. The V4 has plenty of power but under some conditions the gearing doesn't match up just right.

An observation I made a long time ago when testing various bike/trike combinations:
While the bikes have different HP/torque ratings the trike manufacturers seem to use the same rear end gear ratios.
Maybe some different gear ratio offerings for different bikes should be thought about.

I have a 2009 Venture Hannigan kit. I have no problem keeping up with the rest of the bikes. Matter of fact on a couple of rides I have led, I've been told I need to hold it down just a little!! You will notice a slight difference if you are moving from the same bike (two wheels) to a trike but with the added weight, about 350 pounds, that is to be expected. However I think you will likely be pleasantly surprised in how much "git up n' go" you still have, even two up and loaded.
Edit: Also consider that this is a 1300cc machine that more than holds its own with the 1700-1800cc crowd in torque, HP and top speed.

We have both 2 & 3 wheeled Ventures and have done 2 up trips with a heavy trailer (250-450 Lbs) in tow with both bikes.

With the '01 2 wheeler you do have a bit more power to get you going, but, braking is a bit slower and need to be a consideration at all times. Under most conditions you don't know it's back there.

With the '08 Venture/Hannigan, acceleration is a bit slower from a stop, but has ton's of braking power and I don't have to ride any different with or without the trailer in tow other than from a stop.

With either bike all you need to do is drop down 1 gear lower and the power you need is there, even on steep mountain passes. It doesn't have the power of a Gold Wing, but is way more comfortable on a long trip and given the choice I'll take the comfort for rider and pillion every time.

I don't think a Venture trike will disappoint you.

Thanks to all for the replies!

This whole thing really has my stomach in knots! This is A LOT of money for us, which we CAN afford, but can only afford it once. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Venture, but find that I avoid it unless we are going out of town trip, because of the weight & my bad legs. When we are in town we take our lighter Vulcan 1500, which is nowhere near as comfortable!

I have thought about buy a cheaper, used Trike, but I KNOW my bike and it's history.

i have not heard of ONE person that regrets Triking their bike. Though I HAVE heard of people regretting selling theirs.

The power issue has been holding me up. It sounds like it is a non-issue, so I really need to bite the bullet and get this going.

as soon as I can take a few hours from work, I will have to stop by the credit union and get this going.

thanks again folks.

I think you'll be happy. I have just as much fun no matter which bike I ride. I know I'm way faster in the twisties on the trike. Put a rear Michlin CommanderII up front , in reverse rotation, and that trike sticks like glue through the turns. Your friends will just be a dot in the mirror!

    Lol

I will bet money that the net weight gain is not 350 lbs after the trike conversion. That may be what the trike kit itself weighs but you have to subtract all the take off parts like the rear fender, wheel, tire, swingarm, axle, hub, brake disc, brake caliper, drive shaft, tail light, turn signals, tag bracket, saddlebags, brackets, etc. Its probably more like 200-250 lbs or so net gain. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I've had no problems with power or lack of. Do you have the Dyna 3000 Power Commander? With that and resetting your PMS screw adjustment out just a bit you should be good.

How would the Dyna help, I don't have fuel injectors? I know NOTHING about a Dyna.
PMS? - I doubt you are talking about the one I am familiar with. 😉

In ref to Bazookas weight comment:
I've never thought of it that way. I've just blindly accepted the 300-350 pound weight gain statement. But now I really believe it probably is closer to 200-250 pounds. Whatever it is, my RSV Hannigan has the power and speed that I enjoy.

Yes, Power Commander on the 4 carb Venture. I was lucky enough that one was installed when I bought my 05 used in 06. I rode my friends 06 Venture without one and what a lack in power compared to mine. It advances your spark (timing) and increases your rev limit. Go to the Delphi forum and do a search , Royal Star Venture and Tour Deluxe Forum. The CPU is mounted under your battery box. Just unplug and replug. The newer units now have a USB port plug and program to set the settings that u want. Mine just has the little slide switches that are numbered for what u need. Good luck.

This unit makes your Venture come alive.
The PMS screws are set from the factory on the lean side. By just turning them 1/4 turn out makes a nice difference.

Stop stressing and go pull the trigger. It will do anything you want it to do. If you can get different gears for whatever rear end they use do an 11% reduction. That is what you get when you swap in a VMax rear end into a 2 wheeled Venture and everyone who has done that says it really wakes the bike up.
I totaled my 08 RSV-S and let the insurance company take it. I should have triked it,but instead I bought a Goldwing trike.

It is a great machine but I so miss my V4's. They just fit me so much better then the Wing. I hope soon I can afford to buy a low mileage RSTD or RSV to trike.
    Happy TRAils/NSD

Please do not worry as I did and all the rest of us did, it will be worth EVERY PENNY you
spent on the conversion and you will wonder why you waited so long to do this.
RELAX and ENJOY !!
Oh feel free to call me anytime when your nerves get all in knots :-)
Default Re: Venture Power?

One thing not mentioned is that Hannigan does change the rear axle gear ratio compared to the stock gearing of the Venture. Stock gearing is 3:03 -1 to, I think, 3:73 for their trike kit. Could be off on these numbers a bit but they're close enough. What this does with the gearing difference is that it'll raise the rpm's about 500 rpm's @ 70 mph. This will bring the rpm's back into the sweet spot of power and not cause the engine to lug like it would do if left at the stock ratio. The thing you'll notice most is that with the lower gearing is a better off the line start and also less need to be down shifting on hilly roads. The only negative is a lower fuel mpg but you can't avoid that anyhow when triking due to added weight.
As has been said just go for it . I like others have never regretted triking either of my two Ventures.
