I Am Now a Triker!

I picked up my trike Friday night, and despite some chilly weather this weekend, managed to log a couple of hundred miles on it. I went with a DFT Smoothie trike conversion on my 2007 Street Glide. The work was done by Lancaster (PA) Harley-Davidson, under the oversight of Ray Texter, a great guy to work with.

The DFT has an independent rear suspension, with 4 adjustable coilover springs and adjustable swaybar. The muscular body offers 9.7 cubic feet of storage space – considerably more than most of the others. I opted for their exhaust kit, which is essentially Rush 1.75 slip-ons. For reverse, Ray recommended the Champion reverse kit, and I followed his recommendation. The standard wheel choice is a 16x7 American Racing Casino (5-spoke) wheel; I chose their 7-spoke Haze wheel in 18x7.5, with Cooper Zeon 2XS tires.

It took exactly four weeks for the kit to come in, and only 12 days for Lancaster H-D to do the work, including painting. Needless to say, this was a very well managed and efficiently coordinated project. The quality of work was excellent, and I would recommend Lancaster Harley-Davidson to anyone looking for a trike. If you’re thinking of doing a DFT conversion yourself, Brandon (the mechanic) took 26 hours for the labor, which included the exhaust, reverse kit, and trike conversion.

Well congrats on the new trike, thanks for posting the pictures too. Very nice looking trike. A word of warning always add time to ur trips when u have to stop for gas food or anything else. People are going to be asking u all sorts of questions. Also be prepared for the snide comments (oh i had one of those when I was 10 yrs old). I don't even bother to answer those. Great trike now get out and enjoy it. keep us posted on ur adventures and how u are doing with the trike.

OH you are gona get stopped by people you betcha... with that unit even more than with the conventional looking one like mine. I had people run out in the middle of the road while I was stopped at a light to have their picture taken next to mine.

+1 what John said on getting stopped by people. You had better plan on allowing an extra 10-15 minutes at every gas stop for pictures and questions from young and old. Isn't triking a hoot?

Nice looking body, I am planning on doing something similar with a Goldwing and DFT kit. I am going to buy it without the body and build my own, like my Burgman trike I just finished. Any one know where I can buy a 1/6 scale model of a 1800 with good detail, that i can use to try different body designs. Wayne
