Doing the Iron Butt next week.

Larry (met on this forum) and I are heading out next Thursday to do the bunburner/saddlesore (1000 miles in 24 hrs/1500 miles in 36 hrs) on the trikes. Praying for good weather.

Leaving Alexandria, LA heading north to Texarkana then east to Nashville, TN and then down to Chattanooga and on to Birmingham. We will stop for a nap just out of Birmingham and head to Meridian, MS where we will head south to Slidell, LA then west to Lafayette then back north to Alexandria. Can't wait till we go. Getting pretty excited about the trip.

Is it true that you have to use steel wool instead of toilet paper when riding an Iron Butt? Anyways, enjoy.

Got all the route planning done and loaded into the Zumo. Started gathering copies of the paperwork today for it and putting a small receipt book together. Also, taking a camera that date/time stamps the pics to help document this run. Brenda, my wife, will sign and see us off and be there when we get back to sign for our return.
Hopefully, I now have all the loose fasteners addressed from the conversion and nothing else falls off. I'm tossing a roll of bailing wire and some wire cutters in the tool bag just in case...lol.
Like Dave, I'm looking forward to this run and have been planning it for some time. It's been a goal of mine for a long time but never could find the time for it; always working or something. Originally, back in July, I planned on doing it alone on that new Yamaha FJR, but when Dave showed interest in doing it too, I decided to do it on the trike together with him instead. I double-checked with the IBA to make sure trikes were ok to use. They are as long as they were originally 2-wheelers and converted. We're 2 old farts that really ought to know better, but we're gonna try it anyway.

I don't think it's true. Although when you finish the run, it might feel like you've been using steel wool for toilet paper!

David (bayoudave), Richard (David's friend) and I completed the Iron Butt SaddleSore 1000 and the BunBurner 1500 mile run this past weekend and whadda trip it was!!
We left around 6am on Saturday morning and did 1000 miles in about 18 hours and the 1500 miles in 33.5 hours.
The last 6 hours of the 1000-mile run was done at night and in temperatures hovering around 40 degrees and probably even colder when we went thru the mountain passes making the wind chill about 30 degrees or cooler. It felt like 0 degrees to me. The only way to describe those last 6 hours was just "outright brutal" for these warm-blooded south Louisiana boys...LOL. Even though we were dressed to the hilt, all 3 of us were literally shivering in our boots with teeth chattering when we stopped for fuel. We laid over in a hotel about 5 hours and then hit the road again for the extra 500 miles for the 1500 portion. Although I had never met these guys in person before this run, we all hit it off great and had a good time....lookin' forward to another one, David!!

I never realized the ironbutt/saddle sore/etc was a goal until a couple of years ago. I always just called it the "I'm halfway across the country and sick of this three week trip and want to sleep in my own damn bed tomorrow night"ride.
