Default Installing A Freewheeler Analog Tachometer

I've taken possession of my new FLRT a whole 3 days now, and I've got a LOT of opinions about it already! (Natch ~ that's my nature )

Here's one = has anyone installed the analog speedometer / tachometer P/N 74774-11B? I bought one (yes, I know there's a digital tach in the information window) based on the information on Harley-davidson.com.

After I bought it, the part disappeared from the web site, under 2015 Freewheeler > Parts & Customization > Shop For Parts > Instruments and Gauges!

When I search on '74774-11B' the 'Trike Freewheeler' still appears under the 'Inspiration Gallery' heading. When I downloaded the .PDF accessory list, "NEW Speedo/Tach - Spun Aluminum Dial" is listed. But when you look under the 'Fitment > 2015: the 'FLRT Freewheeler' has disappeared.

Apparently, the Harley web site did a half-a** job of retracting this available item. The girl at H-D® Online Store Customer Care, 800-258-2464 could only tell me that it's not on the list (duh )

I still have it 'new in the box' ~ if I open it, it wouldn't be returnable. But before I return it, I'm hoping anyone else who bought / installed this gauge can assure me that it works as intended.

Return it! That Gauge does not have the Reverse, Reverse Trip, or Barking Brake indicators needed for FLRT.

It is my hope that HD comes out with another unit for the Freewheeler this year. And, I have already asked Dakota Digital to as well........

    Only time will tell.

Default Freewheeler Analog Speedometer / Tachometer

I've been harping about the lack of analog tachometer for a 1+ years now. If my speedometer failed, I wouldn't miss it much, but I constantly monitor my tachometer. Worse, it's only one "information window" in a string of "information" windows that are triggered by my left hand "trigger switch".

I hope there's a special place in Hell for the moron at Harley Davidson that placed that "trigger switch." When my Freewheeler was new, I'd hit that f*&$%*g switch about every 3rd or 4th shifting cycle. I'd look down to discover I was looking at the Odometer, or Trip Meter A, or Trip Meter B. One of the first things I did was cut the "trigger switch" cap in half, which made it bearable (just.)

When I bought my wife's Dyna a few months ago, I decided to bite the bullet and install the H-D analog speedometer / tachometer combo, P/N 74776-11B. Both the Dyna and the Freewheeler used 5" dials, and wiring in the Service Manuals looked similar. I don't care about the lack of a red 'parking brake' light, and with NO yellow "R" light, I decided I'd press the Reverse button, count "1-2-3" then press the Reverse button a second time, and trust it would work.

I had 31 miles to try it out. If there was something wrong when I installed it in the Freewheeler (unexpected light(s), wrong light, some feature that didn't work) I'd remove it and foist it on the wife's Dyna instead . After 31 miles, it's electronically "married" to the motorcycle's ECM and can't be changed.

So, I installed it. I checked everything out within the first 10 miles and it worked perfectly.

Regarding the lack of a yellow "R" light, when a rider decides to select reverse, the bike has to be idling in neutral, which displays the green "N" light. As soon as I pressed the Reverse button the first time, after a couple of seconds, the green "N" light extinguished! Then I was free to press the Reverse button the second time.

It turns out, I didn't need the yellow "R" light after all

    Default Analog Tach

I have been wondering about that Tach for some time. I dont use my reverse at all so the light is not a big deal. I was told by a verry good parts person that they didnt know if it would work on the Free. Now that I know I will buy one and put it on. Thanks for the info.

    Default tach

I also was looking to install the new gauge with the tach. My HD dealer checked and called their contact with HD and was told that the gauge would not work on the Free, but did say that HD was working on a new gauge that would work on the Free.

So now I'm waiting to see what will come if anything. I may do the same as you did if nothing shows up from HD by this spring.

Also, OpiniOnated, I seen that in your first post you showed a PN 74774-11B and then in your later post you stated the gauge you installed was PN 74776-11B. Was the last part number the gauge that you used?

    Thanks for your help.

Response = Yes, the 74776-11B is the one I bought / installed. In the intervening year, Harley changed the part number.

You can still buy 74774-11B but its marked ""FINAL SALE, NON-RETURNABLE" for whatever reason."

Also, this tachometer is only a 1-5/8" gauge, which is small. I usually ride in the 2,K ~ 4,K RPM range. On this gauge, the pointer sweep is only 1/2".

I have never had a problem with the placement of the trigger switch for the speedo functions. No issues with hitting it unintentionally at all.

I don't mind the stock speedo myself. With that said it really would be nice if Harley did come out with some speedo and tach options for the Freewheeler trikes .

Does anything light up for the parking break?? I ask because with the first generations of Tri-Glides there wasn't a parking break light. LOTS of people wrote to bitch about premature break wear. I was honest enough to admit I rode with the break on several times, wearing out my breaks and warping my rotors. I guess I was the only idiot on the boards. With the 'Free thee is a HUGE red light to remind me the break is on.

There's no indication that the parking brake is ON or OFF, other than looking down at the pedal.

My comment about not caring about the parking brake is my personal habit. I have a life-long habit of setting the parking brake, whether the engine is running or not.
