Warranty-Bike or Trike

Well I have been perusing several Gold Wing forums, with trike forums,as well as this one. A statement was made that you void your warranty when a trike kit is installed. And CSC will void the trike warranty if installed on an airbag bike. Having just dropped $34,000 on a brand new trike, with an airbag, I was devastated. My wife was even more dumbfounded than I. So, I went to the dealer with the info and relayed what I read. His reply was Honda will not "officially" deny coverage on a warranty claim with a trike installed. Once word of that got out, nobody would buy a new Gold Wing to trike. What is done is that the Honda Rep approves a payment to another account to make up for the cost of the warranty. They have done this already. Only if you go to a dealer that doesn't want to do warranty work will they out right deny coverage. And as far as the airbag is concerned, they have already done 3 other airbag conversions with no problems. Warranty work is up to whatever dealer you go to. If he needs the work, you get covered. IMO, If he is a dick, you don't. Anyone have any dealings with warranty and trikes? Tom

I arrived in GA this summer and the dealer in McDonough, GA denied any warranty work although I have an active 7 year warranty. In fact, they didn't want to look at the trike only because it was a trike. Needless to say, If I were to buy another bike, I would go somewhere else. Sometimes these dealers don't understand customer service.

Tango, I wish U nothing but the best... but I really think the dealer is blowing smoke!!!!! From my friends and all the other post I have read once Honda finds out it is a trike, that is it on the warranty work...
I hope I am wrong but I don't think I am...
My next trike will be a Tri-glide if I want one with warranty...:eek:
Honda is not ready to admit that trikes are going to be around. the only dealer I knew that would work on them has gone out of business..

It all depends on the dealer. If he wants to be a prick, he will deny warranty. If Honda out right denies warranty because it's a trike. It will get broadcast through out the country! Once word circulates, it gets into one magazine, then another. Honda will be caught between a rock and a hard place. When people stop triking Honda's. Honda will take notice. Money talks. When they start losing money it wakes people up. HD will clean up! I certainly hope it doesn't happen. Bad publicity spreads FAST! Isn't the internet great! And it takes an awful lot to reverse it. I am coming up on deadline time to decide if I want to purchase the extended warranty for my 06 wing. Bike is being triked this month. Based on what I am reading here, it would be foolish to buy the extended warranty. Would that be a safe assumption?

You will (should) have no problem at your home or buying dealership. Curious, Have you priced the extended warranty yet? How much, and did you talk it over with your dealer? Tom

wingking, Is your Honda dealer doing the conversion? If not then come right out and ask him if they will cover the bike after it is triked. I would get it in writing. Other dealers probably will not.

I asked my Dealer, and Builder, about the remaining warranty on my '08 Ultra Trike after the conversion. He said, "They don't ask, we don't tell".

I suggest that you ask the dealer principal or general manager rather that someone in the sales or service department. I think that the bike manufacturer would be hard pressed to justify denial of a warranty claim unless he/she could demonstrate/prove that the trike accessory contributed to the failure.

I had a starter button go out last fall..they just fixed it no questions asked..just handed him my little card...Boom

I haven't had any warranty issues to test this but my dealer said that he would just put it through without mentioning the trike. I was worried though that if I had a problem while we were travelling that other honda dealers might not be set up to deal with fixing the trike.

Roseville Cycle in Roseville Ca. told me there will be NO warantee work because of the CSC trike kit on the 08 Goldwing.
They sure know what it takes to create loyal customers.
I'm new to the Wing but it won't take long to get that service manual and figure out what to do.

I agonised about this all last winter. I had located a new 07 Wing setting on the dealers floor and thought about picking it up and doing a trike conversion on it. I then started reading and asking around. I found on one Honda forum where a guy had a Wing that was triked and the transmission went out. On that large of a repair Honda has to be involved and when they found out it had a trike kit installed they denied the claim so he ended up with about $3,400 out of his pocket to fix the broken transmission. I talked to some dealers and they said small stuff they don't have to get Honda involved with they have no problem. Big stuff in the power train which is large dollars and Honda gets involved they can't help so the person has to pony up the green out of their back pockets because the claim will be denied.

I ask the same questions of Harley dealers and came up with pretty much the same answers. Small stuff all is good, big stuff, especially power train your on your own because HD is involved. I'm finding HD is even more involved with warranty claims than they used to be in the past. They seem to be tightening their belts pretty tight these days and making the dealer get their ok before warranty work is performed. After my research I decided to buy the Triglide which comes with the 2 year factory warranty.

Personally, Warranty would not enter into any buying decision I would make, but I'll agree with most, that it's up to the individual dealer, as to weather he can bury the work without mentioning the third wheel. I would believe that if a new bike dealer did the conversion, he should be standing behind it.
