Ideas For Trailer for Dogs

Bought a motorcycle trailer last year to tow behind the Trike. I would like to see if anyone has ever used a trailer for taking their pets along with them. I know that there are the Wags trailers for pets. They are way too expensive for my budget. My trailer is much like a clam shell. Does anyone have ideas or have you made one? I would like to see pictures if possible. My husband could do the work. He will cut a hole in the top but we need something that will allow the 2 small-med sized dogs from being able to put their heads up to look about while not allow them to jump/fall out. We will also want to be able to convert it back to a regular trailer as well when needed.

Don't want to throw a clod in your churn but at first blush it seems that there would be a lot of exhaust fumes passing over/around the trailer that would pose a danger to your pets??? I don't know what exhaust system you have on your bike but noise levels would also be a consideration.

ladyff1481, a rather cost effective method would be to duct tape the pets to the top of the trailer. Saw that on McGyver episode.

If you scroll down to the pet hatch they have a windshield that fits on and they have a cover for when the dog isn't in the trailer. Now that hubby has the sidecar, our dog rides there. She's a lab so some of the little pet carriers were not an option. She loves going along with us and settles in for a nap after a few minutes but we have a dog seatbelt for her just to make sure that she doesn't find some passing horses or something too exciting.

Just tie the leash to the hitch and you won't need to even take the trailer,

Go to a wrecking yard ... (probably the only place to find one any more) ... Get an old bubble window from a van ... Install it on the top of your clamshell ...

I'm not worried about exhaust fumes. W*gs makes a pet trailer but they cost somewhere around 3-4K and there was a prototype at Americade 2 yrs ago. Trying to do this the cheap way. My dogs love to hang their heads out the car window so they might just enjoy riding in a small trailer behind the Trike as long as they can look around.

A folding utility trailer (about $300 at Fred Meyer) ... An automotive rooftop cargo carrier (clamshell design, about $ 2-300 new) ... Add an rv roof vent cover for about $ 30-40 to the top so they can see out and there ya go ...


Just an idea to get the brain cells working ...




Looks like another project for ray ... I bet he could make a fairly inexpensive one (under $3,000) ...

The trailer may not matter if you can't get your dog to get in...stay in and behave while he/she is in there. I have one that can gnaw through cage-wire or fiberglass.

I suppose this concept is for the more well behaved pets that like to travel. Just train your pet to ride like the good ole boys out west or down south. I see them riding on top of pick-up tool boxes all the time. I was broke-down along the road-side in Texas once and this guy came by on an Ultra Classic. He turned around and when he came back to help me, he had a little dog sitting in his lap. He got off the bike and found a wrench I needed back in his tour-pack, but the dog never left the bike. It would climb about all over his machine, but never moved off the bike. When it was time to leave...the dog stood on top of the gas tank while the old gentleman mounted the bike and then jumped right back in his lap.

Boy...I wish I could train my wife to ride like that little dog.

I saw an ad in BTW's latest Mag. for a pet hauler. Looks like a tiny horse trailer.....I would have concerns about exhaust fumes...and noise considering the mufflers I run. I'd probably need a full size horse trailer for my Bullmastiff, Beavis.
