Default Question: Now that I have triked out my GW, and the side stand is not needed anymore

    I have an idea,

For safety, and less chance that our beloved triked wings can't be stolen...

Is there a way to put a switch, between the wiring that used to shut off the motor when side stand is down??

Meaning now just flick a switch, and it makes or break the circuit, so the bike will not start if this switch is shut off...The bike will NOW only start if the switch is open...

Only the owner knows, where the secret switch is located (kinda like an emergency switch on a heating unit) or a wall switch on a lamp....

    Good or bad idea??

    Ronnie

Sure you can, Its just a matter of where you want to put[hide] the switch and wiring... Back in 68 i wired a switch from the coil to under the dash of my 68 Charger, And one time someone tried to take the car buy using a master key, The hidden switch [cut off] saved the car..And they really wanted that car it was set up for the drag strip...

A couple folks on the Trike Talk board showed interest in my using the "no longer needed" side stand switch function as an anti-theft device.....

This switch has caused several people problems so when I converted my first GL1800 several years ago I set about to totally disable the switch thus removing that possible problem. While doing so I quickly realized it would be quite simple to install a single pole double throw (spdt) switch in a hidden yet easy to access location and when in the deactivated position simulate a side stand down condition and activating the “S” indication on the instrument cluster. Thus preventing the trike from being driven off if an intended thief managed to bypass the ignition switch and get the bike running.

I found a spdt mini switch at RadioShack, don’t remember their p/n, with a neutral (no contact) center position which add even another feature. With the switch it that position no ground it being sent to the either ECU input so it thinks the side stand is up removing the “S” from the instruments but when you put the transmission in gear the engine dies.

Here's the process: There are three wires going to the side stand switch. One green (ground), one green & white (ECU sstand), and one yellow & black (meter [side stand]). When the side stand is down green and yellow/black are shorted. When the side stand is up green and green/white are shorted.

I cut the wires just before the connector the Side Stand Switch is plugged into and soldered a three conductor wire harness between that point and the hidden switch. Green wire is common - green/white make contact when switch is up and the yellow/black make contact when the switch is down.

Depending on how creative your wire routing gets and all the other factors you can spend an hour or two but that should be the last of the worries with that pesky side stand switch (unless you bump it into the down position by accident)......

A major side benefit to having the toggle switch in place it that it does indeed simulate the side stand switch should you need to read the FI code. Simply leave the engine running and flip the switch to the position simulating “side stand down”.

Just wondering... is there a big market for stolen trikes? I don’t know how to find that data. A google search yielded only reports of stolen bicycle-trikes (recumbent), nothing about motorcycle-trikes. If someone can find that data please chime in. I don’t doubt that they are stolen, just wondering maybe what part of the U.S. seems to have the most reports. Possibly the border states like Texas? Thanks.

I would think because Trikes are registered as Motorcycles stolen Motorcycles and Trikes are lumped together..

My Freewheeler title has MC on it. Just like anything else, I am sure there is a market for stolen trikes.

I was just laying bed last night, when I woke up, with this idea......... I'm "thinking" dang, what a wonderful idea, nobody thinks of this, or last least I never heard of it before.. If keys are lost, stolen, pick pocketed, or bike is somehow "hotwired", the bike still will not start, unless this switch has been flipped to the on side position..

Ok going to go shopping for a [weather/water proofed] switch tomorrow................

    Thanks guys!

    Ronnie

Oops! looking back I see "Goldrush" had that same idea before I did....Sorry G/R I didn't mean to steal your idea..
