View Full Version : Kerrville Ride 2021
Thought we might want to start a 2021 thread to avoid confusion for others who might be interested...
So it appears that, right now, some intend to be here April 15 - 28 or sometime within that time period...exactly which days are to be confirmed and posted as the date approaches...

Leon for years Trike Talk has had a gathering in Kerrville, it is a fun time we ride every day, eat way to much & and visit. ( some, not all will have a beer or 2) after the ride is over. it is a good time to put some faces to the names, a great bunch of people show up. last year the gathering was called off be cause of the virus, Darlene and I have not missed a gathering from 2012 or 2013. and will make it this year. see you there

The storm was reported as "unprecedented" in the state's history, so you are right about only time will tell. I spent time and money xeriscaping my lawn with native Texas plants that have thrived for years. They are all dead now.

To answer the question:
I will be leading the ride the morning of the 17 April Saturday, (Blue Bonnets), we will meet @ 0900, Super 8 parking lot. After ride meeting we will leave around 0930. This ride will be approximately 6 hours, including 1 hour for lunch.
On 18 April Sunday my good friend Gold Rush will lead the ride for the Twisted Sisters, starting at 0900 Super 8 parking lot. This ride will be approximately 7-8 hours including lunch.
On the 19 & 20 April Gold Rush will be leading the rides and they have not been completely built yet. Gold Rush knows the Hill country like the hairs on his hand and he enjoys riding. So the rides will be relative long and you'll get to see most of the Texas Hill Country.

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone. This will be my second gathering with TT folks. Just curious, is there any time set aside for socializing and "meet and greet"? There are so many of you that I would like to know. In addition to catching up with those previously met...... Jim
Kevin.... See post #’s 40 and 16....
Old River Road Resort is very nice and clean.
DblTrbl Dennis is camped there and vouches for it. It is handy to town also ... about 4’sh miles to Kerrville..maybe 5.
Schreiner Park is a state park and is closer in...on the edge of town...but still has the “out in the country” feel with easy access to the Super8.
I submit these 2 parks for consideration because of their easy access to the Super8 where the rides will be headquartered. There are many rv parks here but some are further out or across town from the Super8, having to go through town traffic and quite a few stoplights.

Jim,
There has not been a structured social hour in the past but folks usually gather on the patio at the Super8 in the evenings...given weather.... some go out to eat together ... then usually a group will gather afterwards for a social time.

We were going to run up to Willow City Loop to see if there were any Bluebonnets peeking out but decided instead to ride closer in... I bought Heli-Bars for the Spyder and we were trying them out yesterday and today...making adjustments. We did see about 10 cultivated Bluebonnets at a friend’s ranchita yard at Center Point today. Kinda worrisome...the Mesquites are NOT out up here yet....meaning we are looking for another freeze or maybe they just got stung a little hard during the Texas Deep Freeze week....we’ll see.

I used to see fields like this back in the 80's and 90's but haven't seen them THIS heavy with Blues in a very long time. The farmers used to sprinkle lots of fields and pastures with the seed for just this type of effect. Also they would throw a lot of Indian Paintbrush seeds to contrast its reds with the Bluebonnets. Not sure if the seed was provided free back then or not...possibly by the Texas Tourism office or the Lady Bird Johnson Texas Wildflower Center in Austin...founded in 1982.

Did a ride up to Willow City Loop today. I thought the Bluebonnet crop was fairly decent. There were tons of those tall white flowers... I don’t know what you call them. One pasture next to a rock home was thick with an all purple color flower... don’t know its proper name either. No Paintbrushes spotted anywhere.
Meandered back on country lanes.

So far, so good with it. The Helibars and backrest make all the difference in the world for me. I have read that getting away from the original factory tires will make another good difference but will wait until these start wearing down....not having a problem with that at this time.

When ready to leave, just south of Arches entrance take 128 N up to I70 for short jump to Fruita, & look for the Col Natl Monument ride. That will take to to south side of Grans Junction & hookup with 50 east to Royal Gorge. Used to be able to ride across the Bridge, but last time there was after the fire & it was a No then.

Yes wear your stockers out first. The rear will go pretty soon, usually under 10,000 miles. The fronts will last forever since there is no weight on them. You will notice a big difference once all three are replaced.

It's funny you say that.....
We're snowmobilers. I had to get the sleds out of the trailer, along w all our gear, to get things set up to load the Trike for this Texas trip.... And now it seems prudent to put some of the snowmobiling gear back in.....
:-)
We are watching the forecast and luckily have some schedule flexibility. As of this morning our weather guys says there's a couple rounds of snow that are supposed to catch us this week.....

White prickly poppy (Argemone albiflora) blooms profusely in April. An abundant, nettle-like plant of Central and South Texas, the plants may grow more than 3 feet tall. Closely related species are yellow, pink, and rose. The herbage is so prickly that cattle leave it untouched even during severe droughts when they have grazed other plants to the ground.

That was the almighty Llano River. Back in 2018 it flooded so big it came close to taking out that metal bridge we crossed in Llano today. There was a lot of devastation and some fatalities. In fact the TrikeTalk Kerrville meetup had just barely ended when that storm hit hard and fast.

Was looking forward to a great ride today when I was taken aback when the ride leader, Jerry, approached me and said they'd wait for me at turns. I asked what's this about and his reply was he'd been told I was a slow rider. Now I'm not a hot dog by any means but I've never been called a slow rider.
Guess it started yesterday when the ride leader Pat told us there were hardly any traffic lights until we got to Llano so we could spread out but in Llano would need to tighten it up. OK sounds reasonable. I was second in line right behind Pat and ran maybe 5 or 6 seconds behind on the highway as the wife and I were enjoying the scenery. At the first stop Pat asked me if I could keep up. Huh? What's that about? Anyway I made it a priority from then on to stay within 2 to no more than 3 seconds behind him. There were 11 bikes on the ride and throughout the day the person behind me changed a couple times. I kept a close watch in my mirrors and I was always much closer to Pat then the guy behind was to me.
Now this morning I subsequently learned from my wife that Dennis, who I think was the sweep yesterday, informed Jerry that he was going to have a problem with the guy on that trike because he rides super slow, held us up yesterday and Pat had to talk to him. He was referring to me. What he didn't know is that my wife was standing nearby and heard the conversation as Dennis not only told Jerry but proceeded to tell all the others who were nearby.
So we pulled out of the line and loaded up heading out. Going to Fredericksburg today to do some things the wife has on her agenda and then heading home.

I am sorry that you misinterpreted my intentions when I asked you to keep up. I did so at the request of others in the group and I never gave it another thought after we spoke. Obviously, you did and I wish you had confronted me at that time rather than in a post.
I certainly didn't know what was going on this morning and certainly I can't control what other people say. If I had a on going problem with you I am certainly man enough to speak to you face to face. Since you feel this way, I understand your not wishing to ride with me again, although you would be most welcome. Should we not meet again, I wish you safe travels.

Sorry you felt unwelcome. We winter in TX, but leave in March, so I have never been to a Kerrville event. But I have ridden with many of the organizers. They are all good guys. They probably didn't know they offended you. They just want to keep the group together.
For several years, I have been the ride captain at our Maggie Valley event. Some times its like herding cats but we always have a good time. It's difficult to keep a group together with red lights, stop signs and impatient cagers. Any one not keeping up, makes it harder. I suppose someone won't like my style of leading. Some will never be satisfied. The newer generation is offended by every thing and it rubs off on every one else. We need to get over it. Don't go away mad. Its not personal! We are all different.
You drove a long way. It's the way you handle it that makes it a good or bad time.
I don't often ride with other groups that go too fast, don't take butt breaks, always take the express ways and stop at all the Harley shops but I always try to keep up, no matter how difficult because as part of the group, its our duty to keep up. I have noticed that those behind me, always seem further away than those ahead of me, because our small mirrors distort distance.

Well said! I don't want to keep this going. But the bottom-line we were not speeding thru. I kept the speed down to 5mph below the speed limit, never went above. Going 15 to 20 mph below the speed limit for someone to catch up is unacceptable. At no time were we speeding! One individual has a issue out of approximately 20. Did not bring his grievance to me face to face and wants air it out in this forum.

Pat, we're "new" to TrikeTalk, and new to posting pics on a public forum.... Not sure what the etiquette is about posting ride pics that show people when you haven't asked their permission first, just don't want to offend anyone....

I was thinking about you riding back to Arizona as I was driving my Old Buick with the trike in tow. It was down right COLD.... 39-42 degrees for a LONG ways out of Kerrville! And, I believe 18 wheelers outnumber all other vehicles traveling I-10 by three to one. Glad you made it home OK.
I got home this morning. I originally planned to drive to Arizona in 2 days with an overnight in Deming, NM. but had an unexpected delay. As I entered Arizona from New Mexico, Old Buick went into "limp" mode. Chimes ringing and the dash lit up saying reduced power and speed. And to top that, I was just entering an area of high winds and dust storms. I limped to the next exit (San Simon) about a mile down the road. Nothing but a truck stop with no one able to help Old Buick.
If Old Buick was 50 years old, I could self diagnose and fix things but now all I could do was check the vitals..... oil, coolant, fuel cap, and look for anything unusual. So, there I am sitting in a dust storm surrounded by parked 18 wheelers and Old Buick is dead. Will not start. Helpless feelings. Made a few phone calls and for the next 60 miles Old Buick got great fuel mileage on the back of a flat bed truck with the trike in tow behind the truck. But MY cost per mile was not so great.
The nice folks at Kempton Buick in Safford, AZ. quickly diagnosed number 4 injector had stuck open and created an electrical shut down of Old Buick in order to prevent severe engine damage. They got Old Buick running and suggested a complete "injector flush" which I had them do. By the time Old Buick was released from automobile purgatory (after it's owner posted substantial bail), it was quitting time for the day. One more night in a motel and a short 160 mile uneventful drive home this morning.
Lesson learned. In Deming NM. I bought cheap fuel at small independent gas station. Never again. Nothing but top tier fuel for Old Buick from now on.
I, too, want to thank all those involved in preparing and leading the Kerrville rides. I had a blast. The weather was excellent as shown in Chuck's (Karen's) pictures. I did not ride day one. Day two I logged 255 miles. Day 3 was 315 miles and day 4 was 234 miles. A total of 804 fun packed riding in 3 days. It is so good to meet those who were previously faceless forum friends. I mentioned to a couple of people that every person I have met from this forum have been people that I truly like and enjoy riding with. Until next time..... Jim

Chipita Park is just west of Colorado Springs. We actually live just north of Colorado Springs in an area called Black Forest. Chipita Park is a nice 30 minuted motorcycle ride away..... No.. it just spat at us from time to time here in Kerrville..not enough to get the streets wet. The western half of Texas (probably more as well) is in moderate to heavy drought conditions at this time due to La Nina being in control. We get our rainy years during an El Nino.
However tonight and tomorrow night they are warning of really severe storms across the area to include heavy rain (up to 3”), high wind and hail 1-2” diameter. Oh joy...:(

Camping World is not my idea of an improvement over your old dealer. When we bought our TH, CW was the most expensive and the most arrogant. On the RV forums, They are known for shoddy workmanship and long lines for repairs, keeping your rig for months on simple warranty work. The salesman that sold us ours said CW bought out his employer and after their sales orientation, he left CW because of their attitude towards customers and purposeful lack of followup service.

I've got Kevin's 1" lift and still need to use some 2x12s when loading in my enclosed.....
I haven't watched other people load their trikes.....
Is it normal to just be able to drive right up the ramp w/o scraping pipes???

Most have to put something under the ramp and crank front as high as they can. Depends how level the ground is.
This is what we did:99290
Our 26th is basically the same as seniorsgt's.
