Default Lehman Sets Trike Land Speed Record

Lehman Trikes Sets a New International Speed Record on Three Wheels!

A new International speed record for three wheeled motorcycles was set today at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Piloted by renowned racer Bill Chambers out of Upland, CA, the specially prepared Lehman Renegade reached a top speed of 123.404 miles per hour. The certified two pass average over the course was 121.672, setting a new international record for the class.

The trike featured the company’s colors of red, white, and black and used an unmodified Renegade conversion kit. The custom V-twin power plant was provided by engine developmental company Aces and Eights Racing from Deadwood, SD.

World Champion driver, Bill Chambers stated, “This was one of the greatest highlights of my racing career, the Lehman Trike design is amazing in its stability and handling. I look forward to returning to the Salt Flats next year and bettering the international record.”

“I think it is important to note that this speed record was attained using an unmodified Renegade conversion kit,” stated Ken Hines, President / CEO of Lehman Trikes. “This product is exactly what our customers purchase from their Lehman Trikes Dealer. As the Leader of the Three World, it is only right that Lehman establish the first international speed record for trikes.”

Nice Thats why I like the Lehman product. My 09 TriGlide and !0 XXX were built by Lehman. Very pleased with the build quality. They make a good trike. Again congrats on the record.

Congrats to Lehman. I have the '10 Tri-Glide and have gotten it up to 90mph. It's nice to only be 33mph below the world record. It gives me hope I am wondering what the gas mileage goes down to at that speed. maybe 5mpg?

This record may be the first one set on a 3-wheeler and I congratulate Lehman on going the expense and effort it took to get their award. I wish they had included the specific class, weight, engine size, etc. so people know 123 is not close to the fastest speed for any trike.
I hit 135 on a State Hwy. 34 years ago, riding a 327 Chevy trike, just to see how it felt at that speed. It was completely steady, didn't feel or handle like it was unsafe and at 4,600 rpms, it was not close to its top speed. I hope people don't think 123 mph is the record speed for any 3-wheel motorcycle. High speed is dangerous and should be avoided, but it's nice to be able to quickly accelerate uphill or around slower vehicles that for whatever reason, has created circumstances that require getting around them quickly.

World land speed records are issued based on specific categories or classes, with a very specific set of standards for that class, such as engine type, engine size CC or cubic inches, fuel, weight, stock/modified frame, rear, etc, etc and there are dozens of classes. Its also not just a momentary top speed, its a one mile measured run and must be confirmed by a second run.

I don't know this for a fact, but it may be that Lehman was the first to attempt ANY officially sanctioned three wheel land speed record period, therefore to this date they may hold the overall WLS record for three wheeled vehicles. Whatever the case, I'm sure glad they did it as it will bring a lot of positive attention to the trike industry and the speed, safety and stability of trikes.

I wish the Lehman article had included the specific class, weight, engine size, etc. so people do not mistake 123 mph as the fastest speed for any trikes. On a State Hwy. with no traffic in sight, 34 years ago, I took a 327 Chevy trike up to 135 mph on a no-traffic stretch of State road to see how it felt at that speed. It was completely steady, it didn't feel or handle like it was unsafe in any way, and at 4,600 rpms, it was not close to its top speed. High speed is dangerous and should be avoided, but it's good to be able to quickly accelerate uphill or around slower vehicles that, for whatever reason, have created circumstances that may present the need to get around them quickly.
