Ironhorsepilot,
From what I understand its not just the Triglide. I have a friend with an 09 Ultra Classic that took it back to his dealer because of the 5th gear whine. The dealer said that he had contacted Harley to find out what to do and they were not helpful.
Sounds like Harley knows it and has not figured out what to do about it yet.
The 5th gear whine has been around since they started putting a Six speed transmission in the HD's. It is the way the gears are cut in 1st & 5th that causes the whine. If you change the gear oil out and put Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-110 in, the whine will be almost non existent. Thats what we did in our Ultra Classic. We have not taken delivery of our Triglide yet but that is one of the first things we will do when we get it. Hope to get it in Feb.
The first and fifth gears are straight cut, the others are helical. Straight cut gears are not as quiet as helical. I have a 07 Ultra and hear no gear whine, although some do. I agree with triglide1, use a transmission oil, not a motor oil, in the transmission. Many, including me, think transmissions should have transmission oil, and engines should have engine oil. If I had a H-D dealer that didn't know about 5th gear whine, I would find another dealer, it's been around sense the 06 Dynas, and all 07's, all harleys with 6 speed transmissions.

Thanks everyone! That makes me feel better. I don't mind the whine, at least it lets me know when I am fifth gear!! I am new enough at shifting, I have to count. LOL!!
LOL, with decent pipes, you don't hear it anyway, and it's not hurting anything. I wholeheartedly agree with two statements above: 1. If your dealer does not know about the 5th gear whiner complaints, go elsewhere, as he's either got his head in the sand, or he's ignoring you. 2. Gear oil in a gearbox, period. I've had best results with Bel-Ray 85W140, but the Spectro '6 speed' gear oil works well too. If the noise bothers you that much, Baker has a '5th gear whine kit' that puts helical gears in there. For the 1000+ bucks they want for it, no thanks.
