dana 30 rear
Considering using a Dana 30 to convert my 883 sportster to a trike.
Notice the commerical trikes have a machined aluminum center housing.
Would the Dana 30 carrier be incased in the aluminum housing by machining off the ring gear flange and side bearing journals or would the aluminum housing totally replace the carrier.

Re: dana 30 rear
found the answer to my question.
The dana 30 is encased in a rotating housing, but the ring gear mounting flange is machined flat on the bolt head side and the OD of the the mounting flange could be reduced to within 1/4" edge distance of the ring gear bolt pattern.

Re: dana 30 rear
Did you build the rear for your trike?
What was the gear ratio?
Thanks,
Jim

Re: dana 30 rear
You'd probably be better off just ordering a complete DNA trike rear assembly, it includes the dana gear set, axles, brakes, hubs, bearings, etc and is ready to just bolt on. The quality is pretty decent and they have been building these for years now. If you want more info, PM me I can get you dealer price on it which is pretty cheap if we catch it on sale.

Re: dana 30 rear
Thanks Zook.
I'm trying to decide if I want to buy a used Dyna or Heritage then build it to a trike.
Some say get the Heritage since it is a soft tail but I don't know yet, still researching it. Probably get something early/mid next year unless I find a deal around christmas.
I will keep you in mind if I don't build and go w/the DNA instead of a Stein.
We will see. I've owned a lot of Jeeps and have a short rear axle but it is centered diff.
Again, researching some ideas and thanks for the help,
Jim
P.S. while I got you, how's the longevity of the DNA's? Someone told me they were made in China or China metal or ??? I don't know, just thought I would ask.

Re: dana 30 rear
Never used a DNA product myself, but I know guys who have been running DNA rears for years with no complaints. I don't know one way or the other if DNA rears are from China, but they may well be....but you'd be surprised what you can get out of China if you go with the right company and pay decent money for it. More companies than you think buy from China including Harley. The parent company for DNA has deep pockets and buys a LOT of product so they get the good stuff.

Ok thank you-great information and a big help on the budget. I'll look into it closer.
Thanks again,
