Looking into rebuilding my engine and possibly transmission. Having a hard time finding kits online for either. Anyone have some suggestions? Also, thought of sending it to a shop. Local import shop says they can do engine for $1500.

I haven't looked at their sight in years, But JC Whitney had enough parts to build an complete VW one piece at a time......
$1500 for a rebuild is very good. However, how much of a rebuild? Top and bottom end? Does that include labor of pulling the engine and reinstall?
There are a lot of factors to consider, and make sure you get a very detailed list of what is being and not being done.
I think that is kinda high.you shouldn't need nothing but a top end rebuild. unless it has been rode real or has lots of miles hard the bottom end should be good
Hmm, as stated, $1500 seems a touch high to me as well. Usually a stock 1600 dual port kit will run around $500 including crank, rods, pistons and cylinders, bearings, and gaskets. Then you have to either rebuild or buy new heads. I would think in the $1000 to $1150 range would be more realistic.
Has been so long since a stockish rebuild that I don't have a clue what it would cost. Cast piston cylinder kits are cheap though.
I paid $800.00 for a rebuilt trans with no core and $1100.00 for a 1600dp rebuilt longblock with no core.
