I have never drilled and plugged an inspection hole in one of mine.
I have seen it done though. Be careful with the machine work. Get enough thread to hold but not let the plug protrude to the inside by much at all. Things are close in there in some areas.
Fiddle with it until you can see a full engagement both ways of the slider. If it does not go deep enough it will pop out of gear......and if you let it do that very much it will wear so it will never stay in again

good information , thanks , fork and pinion nut socket on the way , researching shifter setups

cleaned up the frame from years of crap welds and misc stuff with the big grinder , 2cans of shaeffer citrol and blasted it with3000psi taped off the shiny stuff and hit it with some gloss black paint , looks decent / better :D
