Nice looking buck. I almost collected one close to his size the other morning, with my Tundra.

Tundra huh? Helluva expensive weapon ya got there. Civilian version of an SP155 ??? :D
Maybe that's what I'm doing wrong. Didn't see SQUAT this morning except squirrels as fat as house cats. :gah:
No biggie. Plenty time left.

Maybe a big one will get a case of the stupids and walk right in front of you begging to be popped.

Thanks for the wishes but was not to be this weekend. Wife watched 4 Does (1 big, 3 small) move from east tree-line across a field toward me and stop at middle tree-line. My blind is west of that in the west field looking down as that field slopes toward a series of cuts and deep dry creek beds. They turned and went south instead of continuing west. Been nice to see but I Buck hunt till the last weekend. Freezer still well stocked from two last year so doubt if will take a Doe this year. Might and donate to the Hunter's Food Bank. They charge $80 to process then provide the meat where it's needed. Great cause and deserving folks.
There's always next weekend. Awesome to just sit and enjoy the serenity of the day whether get a shot or not. However, a monster with a touch of the "Jays" would be a welcome sight. Single-Tap from Dr. Marlin cures even the most stubborn and worrisome cases of the Stupids. :D

At least the season is still young. There are churches around here who put on game dinners, their members donate game for the dinner. We attend a couple of them, one of the ones we attend is really well run and the food is top notch.

Well,,, NOT looking good for the Home Team going into the final innings of State sanctioned play....
Seems like every other year here is light on opportunities as the movement habits flip back and forth on the 43 acre private reserve. But, the 9th is coming up this weekend and swinging for the fences in a last ditch rally offensive. We won't go down looking.
Actually, I believe the Deer are not only getting smarter they are becoming intelligent and increasingly proactive in their countermeasures.
Evidence, my neighbor across the back forty has been missing since Opening Weekend and hopes are fading as to his fate. Another hunter captured this terrifying pic on one of his field cameras which does not bode well for our Comrade in Arms...

Grieve not for the Fallen.... This we will avenge in the final epic Battle to come.
No Mercy, No Quarter, and NO Prisoners.

They took his TRUCK! The Tasty Bastards took his Truck! Man, That's just so wrong.....

It appears The Enemy is covertly registered and regularly monitoring this Forum. Much like the Minions of The Devil himself, undoutedly masked behind a series of aliases and fraudulent personas....
Not 30 minutes after exposing the incredible activities and demonic agenda of the Four-Legged Fiends, their Commander, General Mongo of the 12 points, himself led a Recon Raid of 2 Junior Officers and a squad of 4 supporting Troops brazenly into the perimeter of Aequitas Forward Command. He stood centrally poised among his Band of Raiders @ 260 yrds out beyond the prudent reach of my 30-30 Battery as I watched in defenseless disgust through binoculars. Sounds crazy I know but,,, He SNEERED at me! He did. The audacious Cur mocked me. Just as I had completed preparations to mount a flanking counter-attack (prevailing winds from the North across an open battlefield prevented any other course of action), General Mongo signaled the retreat and they withdrew with heads and tails high back to the West from which they came.
No worse for the wear, incited to action, and emboldened to the extremes of mind, body, and Soul,,,, I plan and wait with earnest Resolve for the Final days of Battle to come.

P.s.
Sorry to all, uncommonly quiet here today and bored. But, this is going somewhere on a serious note.
Ya see, realizing this was the perfect opportunity I had waited over two years for, I made sure The Wife (who has up to now taken a Firm stance on "You have more than enough Weapons" yada-yada-yada) was present and saw The Monster. When she asked "Why is that Beast not already dead?",,,, The Master Plan went into Full implementation. I, careful to not seem anxious or scheming, explained the advantages as well as limitations of the Marlin 336 30-30 and the necessity of a "powerful yet flat trajectory/far-reaching" Weapon for these situations. Finishing with something like "No big deal-maybe there will be another more fitting time and if not, oh well" I received the response I had hoped for.
There WILL be a 7mm or .308/7.62 with appropriate scope and bi-pod added to the Armory before next year's Season of the Beast. I promise you that. This will NEVER EVER be allowed to occur again. I WILL be prepared and we WILL Feast on the flesh of our Enemies as his Hereford-sized head watches frozen on the wall above. Best of all, WITH the blessing of my Wondeful and Gracious Wife.

P.p.s. The above P.s. is not entirely true.... She never gave explicit permission specifically. However,,, She didn't explicitly or specifically say "No" either. A non-denial confirmation. Close enough ain't it? Work with me here ....
Also, wasn't planned that way nor was such an event and my subsequent actions pre-scripted or devised.
Again, Work with me here...

sounds to me like its time to up-grade from the old 30-30, a 7m/m mag might just do the trick. If they are real big you might want to consider going to a 300 short mag. :xzqxz:

You smelled what the Rock had cooking didn't ya Bruce ThumbUp see just added P.s.
Love the 30-30 for Gen. Purpose and the Venues I usually field hunt in. Hits like a TON of bricks and is devastating at 0-65 or so yrds.
But, when you need to reach out and touch something/someone violently,,,,, :D

Next year, We Deck Hunt during the Football Games from the comforts of a well-heated Great Room.

hunting from a heated great room sounds great, ( that's the way we ice fish here in Jan. and Feb. We actually flip a coin to see who goes out to check the flags )

Well, I would have to walk out the back door onto the deck into the cold to take the shot... Ain't gonna Sugar-Coat it for ya. :D

Remember intaking mass quantities of Ginger Brandy antifreeze then taking the Honda Big Red out to check the Pike holes and flags on Sodus Bay NY.
Oh the Pain, the Pain. ;)

the antifreeze up here in the Adirondacks is Blackberry brandy or Canadian Club ( for medicinal purposes only )

Been researching and the general consensus I have gleaned is that the 30-06 is a better all around weapon for "over 30-30" but less than 300 yards than the 7mm or .308 calibers. 7mm is flatter at 300-400 than the 30-06 but not by much. Plus the hitting power at 200-300 is stronger. Those are the two main characteristics I want to achieve. Given all that, think 30-06 is my #1 followed by 7mm 2nd. The 300 Win Mag is nice but find the ammo to be twice or more the cost than a good 30-06. Not going to war just a shot or two a few times a year but cost is a concern none the less.
Going to start another thread to get advice and input on this from you all.
